It is pronounced STEVEN and long spelled STEPHEN

The long spelling of Stefen is usually STEPHAN

and the female version is of course: STEPHANIE---- : )

It is pronounced Steven, although it is spelled in the French style.

I've always pronounced it as Stefen, never could swallow the "steeven"
variation. I donno what King's wife calls him but I really don;t care: to me
he is Stephen King, and when I here someone call him Steeven or Steefen this
spoils the halo of excitement around his name...

Never could "swallow" it? How can you object to the way another person says
their own name? And what gives you the right to arbitrarily change it?

I shudder to think what you'd do to my name---just ask Andy and Wojo how I
feel about this subject : )

I had the same problem with Michael Crichton and how to
pronounce his name, but I heard his name on TV once so
everything is clear. By the way, I believe Stephen is a
greek name or something.

There are literally *TONS* of people who mispronounce Chrichton's name. I have
heard them say it wrong a lot of times and the funny thing is, when I correct
them and tell them how to do it - they don't believe me! :-))

Hmm... I'll give it a shot. Is it Le-liah, with the end like in Mariah?

*g* I've always said it like (Lee)-Lee-a with the accent on the first
syllable:).

Sorry, you're all wrong. The middle "l" is almost (but not quite) silent so
it's sort of like "Lee-lya" with a little slurring of the second syllable.
Most people can't make their mouths work right so I accept "Lee-ya". As
Andy and Wojo know, saying or spelling "Leila" is just about guaranteed to
purse my lips <bg>

Family names can be such a trial, donchaknow?
