yes, croatan is the word they found carved into the tree on roanoke island.
if you noticed, linoge made a statement that made you suspect he was
responsible for the disappearance of all the colonists on roanoke island.
they think crotatan may have been the name of an indian tribe or the name of
the place the colonists went to, i don't think they have ever come to a
definite conclusion on this mystery.
i think king was damn clever in using the mystery of roanoke island in this
story. who else could have thought this one up?

Actually, Harlan Ellison wrote a story called Croaton pertaining to aborted
foetuses. King is well aware and a fan of the tale, as stated in DANSE
MACABRE.

A simple internet search shows that the term Croatoan comes up quite often
and is the name of an indian tribe off of Roanoke island. It was also the
island that Governor White (then governer of the english colony at Roanoke,
went to first but did not search (because he didn't know that the Roanoke
population was gone. Croatoan was carved into the side of a tree on
Roanoke, however it did not have a special code inscribed that would have
told Gov. White that they had left (he had devised a code so that he would
know where they went after they had left)...anyway the story is about 4
pages long but sufice it to say, it has to do with Roanoke.

_Phantoms_.

I believe in Dean R Koontz's Phantoms the evil in the city said pretty
much the same thing to the scientists and few remaining citizens.
It also claimed to be the force which extinguished the Dinosaurs as
well as the force that emptied out Roanoke Island and other cities.
