Hi there !
I´m from Portugal, I´m reading "Hearts in Atlantis" and I wanted someone out
there to explain me what does this mean:

AuH2O-4-USA

It´s written on a Bumper Sticker.

I can barely get the meaning, but the H2O gets me confused.

Thanks !

H2O is the chemical symbol for water. Au is the chemical symbol for gold.
Is there a character called Goldwater in the story? (It's been a while
since I've read it.)

It's a pun: AU is the chemical symbo for Gold. H20 is the chemical
symbol for water. Thus AuH2O = Goldwater. Goldwater ran against Nixon
in the 1968 Presidential election.

The sticker is explained later in the section.

Barry Goldwater was a political character, not a fictional one.

It's something of a pun. In 1964, the Republican candidate for president
was Barry Goldwater, conservative senator from the State of Arizona. The
chemical symbol for gold is Au and H20 is a water molecule (two hydrogen
atoms and one oxygen). Au-H20 = Goldwater. So Au-H20 4 USA is Goldwater
for the US (as President). Hope that helps.

"Au" is the symbol for gold, "H2O" is water, thus gold-water, or
Goldwater, as in Barry, an American politician who ran for President.

Goldwater ran against Lyndon Johnson in 1964.
In the short story/novella "Hearts In Atlantis," it's two years after the
election, and Pete still has
the Goldwater for Prez bumpersticker on his car.
Jiminy, I hope that last sentence won't be considered a spoiler.

Barry Goldwater was a US politician in the 60's. He was far to the right
on the political spectrum, a military hawk, and the antithesis of the
hippie/anti-war movements of the time.

Goldwater may have run against Nixon for the Republican nomination for
president, but he did not run against Nixon in the presidential
election. Both were staunch Republicans.

Thanks for clarifying. I'm not really into political history, and I

I don't know if you got anything back yet, but AuH2O-4-USA means

Au - is the element symbol for GOLD

H2O - is the element symbol for WATER

4 - FOR

USA - USA

Equals Goldwater for USA. Harry Goldwater, I think it was Harry, ran for
president back in the sixties or seventies, and that was his slogan.

Brian.

Wrong. Au means authority. H2O means Home to office. So authority to
go from home to office 4/for, USA; united stationary association.
Meaning: you can drive to the office if you're a secretary to the
President but you must have knee pads.

Wojo, what do you think gave her that impression? It couldn't have been the
