Good Evening All,

This is my first post here. I have checked the FAQ and did not see
this subject listed as taboo, so here goes.

In the back of "To Sail Beyond the Sunset" in the section titled
"People in this Memoir" there is a list of The First Man on the Moon
for 6 different timelines. Time line five lists "Skylark DuQuesne".
This gave me an incredible sence of deja vu and I dove into my
bookshelves. Lo and behold, I possess a pb copy of "Sylark DuQuesne -
4th in the classic space adventure series by E.E."Doc" Smith." I have
owned it for over a decade and never read it.

Is this "Doc" Smith an alias pen name of RAH? What is the connection?
It seems strange that the spelling is identical. Does anyone here
know?

Thanks,

SL

Doc Smith was one of the inventors of space opera and Heinlein was
paying tribute to him. I believe Heinlein also refers to his writing in
Number of the Beast.

There is also a memoir in tribute to him in Heinlein's Expanded Universe
titled Larger Than Life. Among other things, it describes how Doc Smith
helped RAH choose a car in 1940. There's only a few fiction stories in
Expanded Universe, and some of them are printed in other books, but the book
is worth the read for his essays and other writings collected within. I
highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it yet.

As an aside, 'Skylark DuQuesne' is the fourth and last book of a series.

The others are 'Skylark of Space', 'Skylark Three' and 'Skylark of
Valeron'. I find them fun to read but they show Doc's 19th century
outlook.
