These alternatives include drug therapies and engineered heart valves for patients of different age groups.</div><div></div><div></div><div>The overall focus of Integrative Matrix Mechanics Laboratory is to characterize and eventually manipulate the structure-function-environment relationship of cardiac valves in an integrative fashion (cellular, tissue, organ, and clinical). The matrix composition and material properties of heart valves are believed to be determined by the load patterns imposed during valve function. Consequently, alterations to the normal tissue loading patterns will affect the cellular phenotypic production of extracellular matrix and transform the valve morphology, mechanics, and function.</div><div></div><div></div><div>This research includes using cells, organ cultures, and tissue engineering approaches to investigate valve disease from a more mechanistic angle. The main diseases studied include myxomatous ("floppy") mitral valve disease and secondary remodeling of the heart valves in patients with heart failure, but this research may have implications and applications for other soft tissues. Ultimately the group hopes to use the characterization of normal and pathological mechanisms of valvular remodeling to derive novel surgical and medical therapies that can be used to treat patients earlier in the disease process.</div><div></div><div></div><div>Ongoing projects include: Understanding the extracellular matrix basis for the tissue mechanics of valves and other soft tissues, particularly with respect to proteoglycans; identification, characterization, and mechanical/humoral/pharmaceutical control of valvular glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans; biochemical, proteomic, biomechanical, and echocardiographic quantification of valvular remodeling in clinical congestive heart failure (a secondary valve disease) and myxomatous mitral valves (a primary valve disease); and development of in vitro surrogates (via cell/organ culture and tissue engineering) and bioreactor systems to study disease and remodeling in valves and other soft tissues.</div><div></div><div></div><div>When living with a heart condition, you need a team on your side to provide reassurance and advice. We understand this. The specialists at Banner Casa Grande Medical Center work to tailor a treatment just for you. We're also here to answer your questions and listen to your concerns.</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>The heroine of our Love Story, this grand silver heart is the ultimate symbol of love. Featuring the familiar curves of our Desire heart, the contemporary design brings together the contrasting effect of polished and textured surfaces in a truly three dimensional piece. Bold, confident, and unequivocally sophisticated, the longer chain and its built-in sliding toggle allows for ultimate style and versatility.</div><div></div><div></div><div>Confident in both its boldly luxurious design and its message of never-ending love, our Love Story multi link bracelet is the perfect celebration of your affection. Style brought to life in rhodium-plated sterling silver, each linking heart follows the distinct contours of our Kit Heath Desire heart, detailed with alternating soft satin finishes and polished surfaces. The grander version of our Love Story multi link braclets, each heart alternates subtly in size to create a contemporary statement bracelet. Crafted in rhodium-plated sterling silver, with a length of 8".</div><div></div><div></div><div>While genetics certainly influence your risk of developing heart disease, a healthy lifestyle can help keep your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels normal and lower your risk for heart disease and heart attack.</div><div></div><div></div><div>Heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) nowadays has become a routine procedure. However, under nonadequate hemodynamic conditions and because of the changes related to ischemia-reperfusion, there is a possibility to provoke oxidative stress with all undesirable consequences. Copper (Cu) is closely related to this stress, taking part in the formation of the hazardous-free radicals. Meanwhile, at least in the pediatric area, little is known about Cu kinetics during cardiac surgery. The purpose of the present work was to study Cu and ceruloplasmin (Cp) dynamics during surgery with CPB in children. Twenty-one patients of both genders from Campo Grande, Brazil with congenital heart conditions were enrolled in the investigation. Blood samples were collected before the surgery and during and 24 h after it. Cu and Cp levels were measured at selected moments and the influence of hemodilution studied. It was concluded that serum Cu dynamics during cardiopulmonary bypass reflects the protective effects of this trace element. Ceruloplasmin levels correlate positively with copper.</div><div></div><div></div><div>Grande-Allen conducts research at the intersection of biology, mechanical engineering and materials engineering. Her investigations analyze heart-valve tissue composition and behavior to pinpoint why, how and where cells interface and respond to disease. The experimental methods involve the testing of valve tissue function, strength and elasticity, growth and abnormalities from nano to macro lengths of scale. Grande-Allen then applies this knowledge of soft-tissue physiology and mechanics to forecast changes in tissue structure and function over the course of a lifetime. Results of her investigations have led to new surgical and medical therapies that can be used to treat patients earlier, have shown new alternatives in drug therapies, and have greatly contributed to the development of novel biomaterials and tissue-engineered materials for heart valves.</div><div></div><div></div><div>As the first section of a multi-part review series, this section provides an overview of the ongoing research and development aimed at fabricating novel heart valve replacements beyond what is currently available for patients. Here we discuss heart valve replacement options that involve a biological component or process for creation, either in vitro or in vivo (tissue-engineered heart valves), and heart valves that are fabricated from polymeric material that are considered permanent inert materials that may suffice for adults where growth is not required. Polymeric materials provide opportunities for cost-effective heart valves that can be more easily manufactured and can be easily integrated with artificial heart and ventricular assist device technologies. Tissue engineered heart valves show promise as a regenerative patient specific model that could be the future of all valve replacement. Because tissue-engineered heart valves depend on cells for their creation, understanding how cells sense and respond to chemical and physical stimuli in their microenvironment is critical and therefore, is also reviewed.</div><div></div><div></div><div>N2 - As the first section of a multi-part review series, this section provides an overview of the ongoing research and development aimed at fabricating novel heart valve replacements beyond what is currently available for patients.
