Abbott, Elizabeth. HAITI: THE DUVALIERS AND THEIR LEGACY.
(hardbound) Subtitled: The First Inside Account. Elizabeth
Abbott is married to Joe Namphy, brother of Henri Namphy, twice
the president of Haiti in the transition period. The book is most
interesting, though Abbott enjoys the juicy gossip of inside
politics more than I do. $12.00.

Louverture. London, 1949. Trans. from French. Very good condition.

Apeture. HAITI: FEEDING THE SPIRIT. 1992, slick, 9x12 photo

Bach, Marcus. STRANGE ALTARS. Important book on Voodoo. 1952.

Beard, Rev. John R. THE LIFE OF TOUSSAINT L'OUVERTURE. London,
1853. This original classic is one of the primary sources which
later authors used in building their portraits of Toussaint. The book
is solid and in good condition, but there are a few tears on the
seam of the cover. $165.00.

Beebe, William. BENEATH TROPIC SEAS. 1928 first edition of this
extraordinary 234 paged treatment of diving the reefs along Haiti's
coasts. Good condition: $55.00

Bentivegna, Joseph. THE NEGLECTED AND ABUSED: A PHYSICIAN'S YEAR
IN HAITI. (1991) An account of a person who worked in Haiti, then
began to reflect on the larger social, economic and political causes
of Haiti's misery. New $13.00.

Cassone, Gian. HAIKU AND THE CITADELLE. fine, paper.
A book of about 150 or so haiku poems about the
citadelle. Some of them are quite provocative. I personally lugged
these books down from the citadelle!! $15.00

Cave, Hugh. CROSS ON THE DRUM. Hard bound, 1959. Perhaps the best
American novel on Haitian Voodoo which I know. Set on the island
of La Torture, it concerns a Protestant missionary and a Voodoo
houngan who come to understand one another and one another's
religions. Good: $10.00.

Cave, Hugh. HAITI: HIGHROAD TO ADVENTURE. Very nice copy of the 1952
first edition of this book. This is the book we've been serializing
in STRETCH. $35.00.

Chauvet, Marie. DANCE ON THE VOLCANO. 1959. An interesting novel
about two free mulattos who are in the theater in Haiti in 1785.
Good book on eve of the revolution. Translated from French.
Hardbound. $20.00

Cobb, Charles. HAITI AGAINST ALL ODDS. Article in National
Geographic of Nov. 1987. Whole magazine. Nice condition, $3.50.

Excellent condition. A classic travelogue. Exaggerated, racist,
sensationalist, nontheless, informative and entertaining.

McCrocklin, James. GARDE D'HAITI. 1956, U.S. Naval Institute
publishing. This research text relies heavily on U.S. Marine Corps
records to tell the story of the creation and building of the Haitian
Army under U.S. supervision. $100.00

Michener, James A. CARIBBEAN. Paper. A novel of the Caribbean in
general with excellent sections on Haiti. $4.00.

Namphy, Elizabeth Abbott. TROPICAL OBSESSION. This is a modern
day setting for a play about Toussaint Louverture. paper. Fine. $12.00.

Niles, Blair. BLACK HAITI. 1926. Written during the occupation and
opposed to both it and the Monroe Doctrine in the Americas. Niles
is a world traveller who knows how to get around. Sensitive and

Paquin, Lyonel. THE HAITIANS: CLASS AND COLOR POLITICS.
1983 out-of-print history of Haiti. This is an excellent
history up to the 1960s. After that it's the story of Paquin's
desire to be the new emperor of Haiti! paper. Fine, $18.00.

Steward, T.G. THE HAITIAN REVOLUTION 1791-1894. This 1914 classic is a
wealth of information. The book I offer was published in 1914, I
presume a first edition. In excellent condition. $55.00

Taft, Edna A PURITAN IN VOODOO LAND. A hard bound first edition
of this interesting 1938 book by a relatively liberated woman of her
day. $35.00

Also, one copy of a 1971 hardbound reprint of this book, in

life of Pierre Toussaint. Very good $8.00.

Temple, Frances. TASTE OF SALT. New, 1992 hardbound with dust
jacket. A touching and profound novel of two youth in Aristide's
Haiti. $15.00.

Thoby-Marcelin, Philippe and Pierre Marcelin. ALL MEN ARE MAD.
1970. This novel concerns the antisuperstition campaign of the
1940s. It is an excellent portrait, satire and commentary on village
life and the anti- Voodoo period. Hardbound with dust jacet, very
good. $35.00

Thoby-Marcelin, Philippe and Pierre Marcelin. THE BEAST OF THE
HAITIAN HILLS. (originally 1946) A paper back edition of this part of
the brothers Marcelin's trilogy of life in rural Haiti. This is
one of the important novels in Haiti's negritude movement.

island. Not much about Haiti itself, but the treatment of the color
problem on his island is an excellent treatment and helps a great
deal in understanding the color problem of Haiti. Hardback. Good. $8.00

Waxman, Percy. Black Napoleon. Excellent 1931 biography of
Toussaint Louverture. Hardbound. $25.00

Weil, Thomas et al. HAITI: A COUNTRY STURY. 1973 overview of the
country by a group of scholars. Has sections on social structure and
social life, politics, economics and national defense. Ex library
copy. Hardbound in very good condition. $20.00

Wimpffen, Baron de. VOYAGE A SAINT-DOMINGUE. 2 vol. Paris, 1797.
These two rare volumes are first editions, translated into French
from the English, but published the same year as the English first
edition. A very rare set, bound in leather and in good condition.
Volume two contains a lovely fold- out chart. Very rare collector's
items. $500 for the two volumes.

1924. This French language book of 710 pages is a wealth of
information concerning the land mass of Haiti. A valuable

Wouk, Herman. DON'T STOP THE CARNIVAL. 1965 novel. Not really
about Haiti, but about a fictional Caribbean island. It's focuses on
the ugly America in the Caribbean. Hardbound. Good. $8.00.
