Synopsis: "Hardy Apples: Growing Apples in Cold Climates" by Bob Osborne is both a practical guide and a loving tribute to the wonderful abundance and diversity of apple cultivars available to the northern gardener and orchardist. Full of tips, facts, beautiful photographs by Beth Powning, and fascinating stories about apples both popular and obscure, "Hardy Apples: Growing Apples in Cold Climates" is inherently fascinating and impressively informative.

Drawing on over 40 years of experience propagating and selling apple cultivars from his nursery in Corn Hill, New Brunswick, author Bob Osborne walks you through the basics of how an apple tree grows and the ideal conditions needed to cultivate a successful crop. Osborne also includes vital information about planting, pruning, harvesting, storing and propagating apples, and he devotes an entire chapter to preventing and dealing with the pests and diseases that plague so many growers, plus the challenges of hard winters and unpredictable weather.

Of special note is that following the section on growing apples there is an extensive catalog of over 90 apple cultivars.

Critique: An absolute 'must' for the personal reading lists of novice and professional fruit growers, "Hardy Apples: Growing Apples in Cold Climates" is impressively comprehensive, well written, beautifully and profusely illustrated with full color photography, exceptionally 'reader friendly' in organization and presentation, and unreservedly recommended as a core addition to personal, professional, and academic library Gardening & Horticulture collections.

Editorial Note #1: Bob Osborne is the owner of Corn Hill Nursery in New Brunswick, Canada. He is a gardening author, a columnist on CBC radio and a member of several horticultural organizations.

Editorial Note #2: Author and photographer Beth Powning has photographed four previous books, including "Hardy Roses" with Bob Osborne. She has a dedicated website at https://www.powning.com/beth

9781732969933, $29.00, PB, 108pp

https://www.amazon.com/Lavender-Fields-America-American-Farmers/dp/1732969930

Synopsis: "Lavender Fields of America: A New Crop of American Farmers" is an impressive pictoral look at the modern (yet ancient) phenomenon of lavender, and the enterprising American farmers who grow the herb, including author, Rebecca Rosenberg.

One no longer has to travel to Provence to experience the majesty of lavender fields in full bloom. Three hundred American farmers have planted fields of lavender from Hawaii to the East Coast. Each distinctive lavender farm is influenced by the farmers who plant them and the land in which they grow. One might think that lavender fields are quite similar, but the settings, types of plants, and characteristics of the farms vary as much as Americans do.

Each individual farm is as distinctive as a fingerprint, germinating as it does from each farmer's background, personal style, and point-of view. Yet, the farmers have all gravitated to the beneficial lavender plant, dedicating their lives to its cultivation, and to the production of lavender products. Their lavender products have practical uses: relaxation, pain relief, insect repellant, air freshener, antiseptic, and more.

From harsh winters to drought to rocky soil, these farmers face challenges with the land. They struggle, sometimes fail, and then persevere in planting the right lavender cultivars and perfecting methods of planting and maintenance.

Critique: With informative commentary and captioned full color photography, "Lavender Fields of America: A New Crop of American Farmers" is a delight to browse through and will have a very special and unique appeal to readers with an interest in herb gardening and garden pictorials. "Lavender Fields of America: A New Crop of American Farmers" is especially and unreservedly recommended for personal, professional, community, and academic library Contemporary Gardening & Horticulture collections.

Editorial Note #1: Rebecca Rosenberg is a lavender farmer and the award-winning author of four books. She lives on a Sonoma, California lavender farm with her family. She has a dedicated website at https://www.rebecca-rosenberg.com

Editorial Note #2: There is a complete list of books by Gary Rosenberg at https://www.goodreads.com/author/list/1344168.Gary_Rosenberg

In an easily portable paperback (5.5 x 0.34 x 8.5 inches), it should be noted that "The Spanish-English Dictionary of Gardening and Landscaping" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $4.95) -- making it an ideal and unreservedly recommended addition to personal, professional, and community library Gardening/Landscaping collections.
