If I've read the first two Riftwar books correctly, Pug's secret name,
when he becomes a Great One is 'Milamber' and he's not supposed to tell it
to anyone for fear of someone having power over him.

Why, then, does everyone know it?

His secret name on *Kelewan* is Pug.

Milamber was the name that he was given to him. His secret name means "One who
Stands between two worlds."(Magician Master APE P.142), but we never were told
what it was. As for Pug well that's his Kingdom name.

No, Milamber is the name he is given as a Great One.

His secret name is something different. Which he discovered well after the
Assembly had given him the name Milamber. It was an ancient Tsurani
dialect/language word which meant "One who stands between worlds." (obviously a
common enough event that they need a word for it <g> ) it was not Milamber.

Milamber is his new name as a Tsurani Great One. It isn't his secret name.
His secret name is ..... well ..... a secret. We know it means "One who
strides between two worlds" or something like that. But we don't know what
it actually is.

The way I remember it, and it has been awhile (although I've read it 4
times), I remember he wasto choose his secret name (which was before
all of his memory returned to him). He chose his secret name, and
though Feist never wrote it down, he did say it was three letters.

Errr .... Actually, having re-read the pertinent passage (last
paragraph of chapter 22 - Training) I'm not so sure now. His Midkemia
name (Pug) is mentioned once or twice earlier in this chapter. Maybe
it's so secret even we're not allowed to know!

He didn't choose it - it was revealed to him on the Tower of Testing as was
his purpose.

Sorry, but I'm gonna have to check this. IIRC Jason's right. I don't
think Pug _chose_ his secret name. I thought rather he discovered what
it was.

Okay, I have Magician open in front of me.
Chapter 22: "Training"

Pug says "Who am I" and Shimone responds "You will have to
decide that, for only you can glean your true name. It is
a name that nust never be spoken to others" etc.

So there is decision involved, but the phrase 'true name'
seems to me to mean that he *has* a true name, but has to work
it out for himself. Later in the same passage, Pug cathces
a glimpse of a short name in his cup. At the very end of the
chapter we are told that his secret name means "One who stands
between worlds".

So.. TADA!

I'm going to disagree with one thing you wrote Bradley =) I believe that
Milamber couldn't remember what his name use to be before he was MIlamber. So
when he saw a small name floating in his cup, it was Pug that he saw. The
point is we will never know what his true name is, but we only know the meaning
of it. Which is in this post. So Lets kill the thread and start a new one =)

The name he saw in the cup was actually his midkemian name because at
that time he had not reached the stage where he was allowed his
memories. He saw a short word, a simple word. But it was his Midkemian
name in the cup.

Oh? And you know because you looked over his shoulder?

We know it was:

a name
a short name
a simple name.

But the name in the cup isn't the issue, it may have been "PUG" or it may
have been his 'secret' name. BUT "Pug" is not his secret name!

Ray is not on the newsgroup but on the list. If you want directions on how to
join the list, then please email me directly and I'll tell you. I've posted
many times on here how to do it.
