Hello everyone...

I'm sure that the rest of you are into music....being a superstar DJ and
indie rock all-star m'self, i figured that it would be an oh-so
pretentiously fun exercise for all of us to share what CD's, Records, Tapes,
etc. we're currently listening to and/or obsessing over. The first person
who mentions a Project band gets 20 faux-goth points...bwahahahahaha......So
anyway, here goes...what's currently spinning "in my player"......Poppy,
please share! I'm so curious as to what you listen to while you work, or
while you play.
In my player...

Magnetic Fields- "69 Love Songs"
Air- "The Virgin Suicides" (soundtrack)
My Bloody Valentine - "loveless" (how does this album age so wonderfully?)
Patsy Cline- "16 Greatest Hits"
The Smiths- "singles"
Yo la tengo- "and then nothing turned itself inside out"
Joy Division- "Closer"

Please share.

OK, if you really want to know, here's my current playlist:

Patti Smith - 'Horses'
White Hotel - 'First Water'
Calexico - 'The Black Light'
The Pixies - 'Surfer Rosa' (great stuff to wake up to in the morning ;-))
Laika - 'Good Looking Blues'
PJ Harvey - 'To Bring You My Love'
Lauren Hoffman - 'From The Blue House'
And some Kurt Weill stuff by Lotte Lenya and Ute Lemper.

Quite literally though almost half the CDs I own are "spinning" in my CD
player. I own one of those nifty 50 plus 1 CD players.

of said artists.

Melissa Etheridge
Liz Phair
The Shangri-las ("When I say I'm in love, you best believe I'm in love,

Barenaked Ladies

Hell-o,

Stevie is my favorite witch. She very good at casting a glamour.

And I hate that bastard Lyndsy. Well, I really don't. But he can play guitar
without a pick and sound like he is playing with a pick. He's a very
overlooked guitar player.

Ohhh, the magical land of gothic music and then some...let's see here:

Oingo Boingo- "Farewell from the Universal Amphitheater"

"The X-Files" Movie Soundtrack (Well both the soundtrack and music inspired by
which has both The Cure and Bjork on one CD :-> )

Danny Elfman- "Music For A Darkened Theater II" (Play it over and over again
when I'm writing, it molds my mind to a certain mood, I've also noticed that
when the music swells my typing increases.)

Danny Elfman- "Edward Scissorhands" Soundtrack

Well at least I recognize those two! I'm laughing at how incredibly un-cool I
must be since I can honestly say I don't recognize about 95% of the groups
people have already posted. Ah well. :)

The CDs in my car right now are:
NIN-The Fragile <mine>
N'Sync -whatever the new one is called <my daughter's>
Metallica-don't know which one <my son's>
Santana <mine>
Jim Byrnes -That River <mine>
Someone else mentioned Patsy Cline.. I've got her too. Patsy's just special.

At home the last thing I listened to was Madonna's-Immaculate Collection, I
love, "Just Like a Prayer."

That is maybe the only one I can still listen to a lot. It always made me

Disco Volante! That's it! I should have remembered such a title...

There are others I heard about, but under yet another pseudonym.

have you heard the new one, "bloodflowers", yet?
robert says that it completes the "trilogy", which consists of
"pornography", "disintegration", & now this one, "bloodflowers".
then again, robert is always lying. heh

as an aside, i got my new laptop last wednesday, & ive been
trying to find cool themes. i have only had x-files themes, & was
looking for some variety. i found a couple cure ones, but they
sort of suck. the colour schemes didnt work well together. &
the wavs werent very good.

That is what I heard, too... Bloodflowers would be as good as
Pornography, really dark and twisted and... Well, then it was released
and I heard it is not like that.

As for the lying... How many last albums and last tours did the Cure
make, again?

I don't like most of the themes available. When I am really bored, I make
one for myself. I have a nice pic of a rat in a trap on my desktop (a
photo I shot in Paris), and the only wave I added is the :

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

<click>

"Dick Laurent is dead"

from Lost Highway. A good starting Windows sound. Of course I had to
change the default colors and fonts, too.

Well, I don't really differ from other people then, as I don't really
like Faith No More. But I do love side projects like "Mr Bungle".

You bought the Rumours album? Hell, all I have to do is turn on any easy
listening, or oldies radio station here and invariable find a single from
that album . . . Too bad that my too favorite Fleetwood Mac songs always
seem to get overlooked though . . ."The Chain" and "Rhiannon" (yeah, I know
Rhiannon was on their first album after they picked up Stevie and Lindsey,
but it's still an under-played fav).

FLeetwood Mac is good though . . . and Stevie is, well, strange.

i think melancholy might be a better word to describe the new
one, from what ive heard. i dont think anybody anywhere could
do anything like "pornography". not even robert himself [again].

just out of curiousity, have you heard any of their albums besides
"the real thing"? i only ask because that was the one where most
people took notice of them, & their 3 albums that follow are very
good, IMO. of course i like "the real thing" quite a bit, so im not
aiming to change anyones mind. there was the one track off "angel
dust" that got quite a bit of attention, but then they never resurfaced
as far as commercial success goes. not that i care about that. i just
wondered what everyone heard of theirs. of course, if one didnt
care for "the real thing", then i dont see why they would bother
looking any further after that, so i think i just answered my own
question. nevermind me. heh

the only one i can stand is "no leaf clover" or whatever its
called. i dont think the other ones work well arranged w/the
orchestration, etc. they all end up sounding stupid, imo.

i think "smooth" is okay. i *really* like "put your lights on". i dont
like any of the other songs. then again, i dont like carlos santana,
so that explains things.

I think that would just kill him, and I mean kill him. Pornography was
written with so many drugs and alcohol that he might be bit old for that,
now... That's basically what he said in the same interview, and this time
I think I believe him.

What you said. Actually, in all sincerity I just could not tell you which
album or song I listened to. Most of the time I discover music via
friends or just buying CDs (sometimes for the cover or name of the band).
As for FNM, I listened to them during a party, it was a tape a friend
made. I can't tell you if it was an album or various songs... I didn't
hate it, just didn't really like it either.

not sure if i believe hes laid off the alcohol much. heh. the drugs,
though. yeah. he would have had to have stopped that. also, i
think his mental health might have been suffering a bit during
"pornography". depression & the like.

Excellent albums, both. I saw FM on their "farewell" tour and became
convinced Stevie Nicks can levitate and glide along the ground.

Not as much as you might think. Actually most of my friends like/love
Manson's music. And the rest are mature enough to conceide to my own tastes

im very fond of "the good son".
you know, i think "the ship song" is so brilliant. does this one

but i cant imagine them ever playing the birthday party. maybe there
are some on video tape or something. is that where you saw it?

That's a group called, "Apocalyptica". . . . They've been around since
before the BLack Album. No, I mean the new S&M album that Metallica
recorded with the San Francisco symphony ochestra. The only good track on
it is "No Leaf Clover". The rest is pretty damn weak and pathetic.

There's also 'California', just came out in 99.

As for me:

Right now I'm listening to a Velvet Underground demo tape.
Eh...I've been listening to Tom Waits far more than is healthy.
Peter Gabriel's music from Last Temptation of Christ hasn't spent
much time in its case lately. Um...The Pougues. Kraftwerk.
Quite a mix...

About the only real memory I have of her is an interview she did over
here with Ian "Molly" Meldrum during some crisis she was going through
years ago. She basically poured her heart out, tears running down her
face, spilling her guts over everything. And as she spoke, Meldrum
had tears on his face as well. Like, actually crying. It was the
most unusual interview I've ever seen.

FM was one of the first albums I ever owned. Haven't listened to them
in years and years, though.

The current most-played stuff in my poor, slowly dying, stereo is:

Rico - 'Sanctuary Medicines' (Brilliant debut album from Scottish bloke
who sounds a bit like Trent, back when he used to do good stuff...)

The Creatures - 'Anima Animus' (Proving that Siouxsie and Budgie still
kick-ass)

A Clockwork Orange - Music from the Soundtrack (Because the film has
*finally* been released here again! Yay!)

Evil Superstars - 'Love Is Okay' (With tracks like 'Satan Is In My Ass'
and '1,000,000 Demons Can't Be Wrong'... well, you just have to listen,
bless 'em :-)

"Those were the days
even the wallpaper turned vicious..."

Oh, I love exercises in self-indulgence.

Literally, really in my stereo changer even as we speak...

BANE- Holding This Moment
BANE- It All Comes Down To This
INTEGRITY- Seasons In The Size Of Days
A compilation CD from S.O.D. Magazine with Eyehategod, Dark
Tranquillity, Arch Enemy and a bunch of other metal bands on it
MINDROT- Soul

In my CD walkman for the morning and evening commutes...

JETS TO BRAZIL- The Orange Rhyming Dictionary (favorite favorite
favorite for the last year or so)
HÜSKER DÜ- New Day Rising
JIMMY EAT WORLD- Clarity

Also really liking lately...

HELLACOPTERS- Payin' The Dues
BLOOD FOR BLOOD- Livin' In Exile
VERBENA- Into The Pink
soundtracks to Pi and Velvet Goldmine
TURBONEGRO- Apocalypse Dudes
BOB MOULD- The Last Dog & Pony Show
SUGAR- Beaster
CATHERINE WHEEL- Chrome

On the bookshelf...

"High Fidelity" by Nick Hornby.
Goddamn, this book made me grin, nod in recognition and wince in great
pain, also at recognition. Reading this was like looking into a mirror.

"Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman
Quite the little thrill ride. He certainly has a future in writing
villains, but I think he knew that. Were I not sure it would be
butchered, I'd like to see this on the screen with Stephen Rea in the lead.

"The Long Walk" by Richard "Stephen King" Bachman
I've lost track of how many times I've read this. For those of you
keeping score at home, I have a paperback copy of the Richard Bachman
edition, not the Stephen King "Bachman Books" edition.

couple of weeks ago, and I think she might be ready for "Rant In E-Minor."

Well, no, the Who and the Rolling Stones actually produced music of
worth, once. Fleetwood Mac pretty much gave us Stevie Nicks' solo
career.

IMO.

Actually, I have a CD that is nothing but Metallica songs arranged for

four cellos. And damned if "Enter Sandman" isn't *better* that way.

Girl, we have *got* to take you CD shopping. Not so much to get you au
courant, as just to get some more obscure good stuff in there too. I

Stevie has influenced me a lot. In first grade when everyone was listing to New

glamorous real song writer. She is like a fairy princess but has had her fair
share of problems and shares them in her music.

I have had the unique experience of <ahem..> seeing them live. They do what
they do very well. They are not musicians in the sense of playing their own
instruments, but they are genuinely well-trained singers. There was no
lip-synching in concert. Their particular brand of <pop> music may not appeal
to many over the age of 14, but it's harmless fun. The decibel level from all
the screaming girls was louder than *any* concert I have ever been to. My dau.
and her friends were thrilled, that's good enough for me.

Another lecherous mom and I were actually enjoying watching the cute young men
dance. Good dancers. <eg>.

I think because my dad listened to a lot of Patsy Cline when I was a child is

Well, now I'm depressed. Social Distortion was on of my favs.

I kind of thought they were finished when Mike Ness did a country album. But I
never gave up hope. And that really sucks about Dennis Danell. It really
does.

I have a Henry Rollins disc from one of his speaking gigs. There's a club
right about where he was speaking. And I think either Socail Distortion was
playing, or some cover band. I think Henry pointed that out and made fun of
them.

Damn.

Oh, I hate to do this, but this is one of the things I've read that Hope
complains about. Her name is Hope Sandoval, not Mazzy Star.

I once called her Mazzy in a story I wrote. Ever since then, I've been the
band in my stories and calling her Hope. I guess I'm trying to make of for it.

Please do not take this as in support of not calling Darious of Hootie and The
Blowfish Hootie. He will always be Hootie to me. Hootie's such a cooler name.

I LOVE Oingo Boingo! My favorites have always been the odd ones. Devo,
Oingo Boingo, Yello, The Call, Amazing Grace on the bagpipes, etc.
(I'm still stuck in the Eighties) Ever since my brother bought me
"Dead Man's Party," Danny Elfman has been a favorite. I can always
count on him and Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo) to add an extra dimension to
my viewing experience; except for Rugrats. That I still have issues
with.

Speaking of Eighties music, does anyone have a song called "My Name is
Norman Bates" by a group named Landscape. I saw it on MTV in the early
eighties and get it stuck in my head every now and then. If I don't
learn more than the chorus, I'm afraid my wife will kill me. (No

Where were all of you when I was getting my ass kicked in here for listening to
FM? Huh? HUH?!?!?

*grins* I had exactly the same reaction on alt.fan.neil-gaiman when
someone mentioned it in another questionnaire...

And don't you just love when your brain itch? I use those CDs as a great
source of inspiration, particularly for drawing - I don't think I could
write while listening the Mr Bungle.

Man, that's one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
'Lament' from 'The Good Son' is brilliant too.

This book is a nightmare for somebody who's not a native English speaker,
you know. I liked it but it's really hard to read. I liked the way some of
Nick's obsessions surface in that book (a flood and a dead twin, hm??? "The
beast it cometh, cometh down" ;-))

I saw it on MTV's Alternative Nation a little while ago. They play Nick's
videos quite often. 'Nick the Stripper' is kind of weird but very funny,
with Nick running around half-naked... Well, it's hard to describe but very
funny.
Have you ever seen the 'Stagger Lee' video, the one where you can spot PJ
Harvey in the background?

Nope, somebody mentioned Air, but... no, I'm not going to say anything nasty
about Air. ;-)
I'm a big fan of the 'Melody Nelson' album myself.
And 'Bonnie & Clyde' used to be one of my fave songs when I was a kid.
Gainsbourg was a god. ;-)

Hmmmm.....funny, I'm embracing the seventies too.
(and I really fuckin' hated that decade)

to wit:

Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks
Al Green - Greatest Hits
Joni Mitchell - Ladies Of The Canyon
(Flamers: FYIA!)

Also nuzzling up to the Sixties a bit with

The Doors - The Doors
The Beatles - Rubber Soul

& for some real time travel,
we have

Gustave Mahler - Sixth Symphony
(Bernstein/New York Philharmonic)

Domenico Scarlatti - 15 Harpsichord Sonatas
(Christophe Rousset)

Robert Schumann - Complete works for Piano & Orchestra
(Perahia/Abbado/Berlin Philharmonic)

And returning to the present:

Social Distortion - Live at The Roxy
The Roots - Things Fall Apart

He had an aneurism while walking up his driveway.
Very sad and kinda weird since TSOL drummer Todd Barnes
went out the same way about Three months ago.

I thought jazz was always automatically cool. At any rate, ain't nobody gonna
tell me Trane's not cool.

And if you won't make fun of my Duran Duran CDs, I won't make fun of your
Steely Dan box set.

One of Chris's favorite T-shirts is the Coltrane one I bought him on St. Mark's
Place (where, alas, there were no more severed heads for sale). It has his
picture and the legend "CHASIN' THE TRANE" printed all over it. I also got him
a Thelonius Monk one. He and Peter Straub exchange e-mails and tapes
concerning this sort of stuff all the time. I think Peter even *knew* Trane,
maybe.

I haven't heard any of it that I am aware of.

Don't rush me -- Rumours is the first thing I've enjoyed in months that wasn't
by the Beatles or that other band I mentioned in a moment of weakness whose
name also ends in -LES.

People send me cool tapes and CDs. I listen to them once, then put the Beatles
back on. At least for now, I am a hopeless case.

You're kind ... but don't get me wrong; I don't WANT to be cool any more. I'm
sick of cool. One of my favorite things about visiting the St. Joseph's altars
was the absolute dearth of cool people there.
