In the past I felt the same about EON by Greg Bear, I'm glad I never
gave up on that one.
I'm hoping the same will happen here.
Neil Gaimen is a Highly Respected Author. I really enjoyed Stardust so
I guess, it's either a case of sticking it out or it's a more poorer
choice of his books.

I think it is highly crafted, tightly written, and contains highly
rewarding bits. But I cannot truly recommend your pressing on as the tone
is disengaging and the characters are not engaging.
I do not regret reading it, but the discussions with those who disliked
it for the /wrong/ reasons was much more enjoyable.

Yes I'm sorry I can't take anymore. I have to read something that's
going to grab me. Life is to short to have pride, when more there are
more interesting things to read. Such as my next on the list Chasm
City by Alastair Reynolds. I can't see me giving up on that one.
Revelation Space was excellent.
Maybe I just don't have the taste for fantasies.
I never gave up on Graham Masterton - although it takes a solid stomach
to endure some of his prose. The guy is a genius in changing the point
of view from the tortioner to the victim at the last moment, resulting
in truly gut-wrenching episodes where you can't help but feel empathy
for the victim. Such a shift of perspective cannot be achieved by
cinema, hence the fact he's never been adapted to the screen. You have
to *be* the character(s) in order for the effect to shake you. On the
screen, the victim - like the tortioner, be he a man or a demon - is
always in front of you, an object, whereas in a novel basically all the
characters are you.
I recommend The Sleepless, Walkers, Prey, Tengu and Mirror. The magic
involved (and invoked) in these books are by far more powerful than the
one invoked by Gaiman - except in "The Sandman - A Game of You", which
was pretty insane.
Having got my reading muse back. I think I was a little harsh on this
book. Times for me to pick it up again I think. There are so many
positive reviews out there I have to complete it.
