Okay, this has been bugging me a little. How do Claire and everyone
from her (original) time pronounce Brianna? I always assumed that since
she called her Bree she pronounced it BREE-anna. However, when she
tells Jamie about her and he says it's an awful name she tells him he
picked it because he wanted the child named after his father, Brian.
Then (and here's where I get confused) he says (something along the
lines of) "Ye say it wrong, it should be Bree-annah". So is Claire then
pronouncing it as Brian, with an a?

Second case she's listed on the ships passenger list as Briana, not
Breeana which would make me assume that she's also pronouncing it as
Brian, with an a.

Anyone want to try this one? :-)

I've always thought of it as being pronounced: Bree-AHN-a, with the accent
on the middle syllable. Jamie says BREEana, which I wouldn't have expected
it to be. I don't think it would sound like Brian with an a, though.

I think the way it's pronounced is BREE-anna, but then that's they way I read
it. I like the way it sounds, too. It's such pretty name:)

I've always assumed that Claire pronounced it the modern way, which is usually
"Bree-ANN-a". And I'd assumed that Jamie would have a more Scottish
pronunciation of Brian, something like "BRRR-ee-an" (roll the r and slur it all
together). That way it wouldn't be such a far step for Jamie to pronounce
Brianna as "BRRREEE-anna".

My name is Brianna, and it is pronounced alternately "Bree-ANN-a" and
Bree-AHN-a (though I prefer the former)

I always gathered from the book that Jamie pronounced it "BREE-ah-nah".

I doubt that she's pronouncing it as Brian with an "a", because of Claire's
nickname for her, Bree.

I guess I was sort of thinking along the lines of "Why would he tell her
she says it wrong when all he was doing was making a slight change to
the stress point. It still sounds rather the same." After all, he said
her way was awful and his way was better.

Well, I thought so too, it just gets a little confusing, especially when
you throw in the 18th century spelling "Briana". However, I never
really doubted that it should sound like Breeanna.
