I found a yellow spine picture cover of #3 The Bungalow Mystery and was looking
at it and did a double take. It has the white multiple pic eps II and lists to
#50 and then the cookbook on back. Looks pretty normal except for the top
closed page edges. They should be black ink topped but instead are red ink
topped? I know some of the later ones had no inking to the top, those w/ the
double oval eps, I have seen those, but never red topped books, especially with
this printing.
Have you run across any like this before, and is this rarer or just an oddity?

thanks for the insight,

jenn:)

I have seen the orange topped old blue books which then changed to the dark ink
tops, but never red--in a pc format. In looking at it closer it could be a
marroonish red....but it isn't a deep maroon.

The first 3 Hardy Boys cvame out that way in 1973 - another G&D
promotion. I'd guess that Nancy got the same treatment.

For some reason, #2 HB is much harder to find than #1 or #3.

Yes, I believe that numbers 1-3 come with the red topped pages. I seem to
remember Paul Mular saying they were Scholastic books, or something like that
(not the same as the glossy yellow version with Scholastic at the base of the
spine though)

I know what you mean about the red printed stripe on the Scholastic versions
of the glossy yellow flashlight Nancy Drew printings. However, this isn't
on the top of the pages is it?

This particular one I found has no scholastic markings, looks like a regular pc
w/ the exception of the red top and has the #50 then cookbook listed last on
back.
I have never seen the scholastic versions, will have to keep my eye out...

I have seen that scholastic in a higher numbered book, can't remember which,
but not 1, 2, or 3, and remember a red strip I think on the cover somewhere is
it? But not a scholastic w/ red inked tops.

Sorry to have caused confusion. What I am trying to say is that there are *2*
Scholastic formats - the more readily identifiable glossy books with
"Scholastic" in red at the bottom of the spine, and an earlier edition, from
the 1970s, where the *tops of the pages* were colored red.

Jenna - please do let me know if you have ever seen a higher number for the
glossy Scholastic format. I myself only have #2, and have heard rumors
regarding the existence of #s1 and 3.

Hi,

I am trying to rack my brain, it has been awhile since I saw the scholastic
version and almost picked it up just as an aside to my collection. I think that
it was a #1 maybe. I don't think it was a #2 or #3, but I can't be positive, it
has been maybe a year since I saw it. I had originally thought it was a higher
numbered, but I think I was mistaken on that.

Lea, I don't think Jenna is reffering to a Scholastic book at all. I
have the same one she's describing, I think, and I bought mine when I
was a child (mid-1970s) at a regular retail chain store: B. Dalton
books in L.A., where all my ND's came from. It matches all the points
for a 1973-A printing, as defined in Farah's Guide.

I think these were standard G&D printings, with just a temporary
variation in ink color.
