Heh heh, plug your computer in a hospital phone jack?
I did that about a year ago...was only in for 3 days...
the site where I put my insulin pump in the previous
night decided to stop absorbing insulin and so the next
morning I woke up, started throwing up, and kept doing
so as my fiance called 911 and they took me 1/2 block
away to the emergency room...and boy that sucked...can't
imagine THREE MONTHS in the hospital, wow.

Off topic...

BTW, whoever it is who comes up with the idea of birthday
lists ALWAYS does it in the week following mine, whether it
be at school, work, online. I was Friday. Grrrr. Turned
28 but got carded tonight which I guess was cool.

And for that matter, while I'm posting anyway, here's a
peeve: Is anyone else totally sick of the way Larry Dixon
makes characters look like completely different people
every time he draws the same one? I mean, let's take Elspeth...
NONE of his depictions of her have ever really resembled her
decription, but there's a new one in SB that's even worse than
usual. Most of the drawings do look better than usual, though.
And I thought the book was excellent (the only part I *really*
care about).

And still more...is there anyone here who likes Clifford Simak?
I know there were a bunch of Zenna Henderson fans around last
year, and while looking up Simak, I saw a review which claimed
that people who like one usually like the other. Something
about them both writing in a "pastoral" style. I remember that
Simak's and Heinlein's obits were in the same issue of Locus,
and I cried about Simak's...

Ah well, I'm babbling (not that I haven't seen *that* before,
here :-)

Later!

Absolutely ADORE Simak's stuff (and Henderson's--got the collection
that has all of her "People" stories in it from SFBC this year).
Particularly enjoyed Mastedonia and Way Station, although they're
almost all good reads. "Pastoral" is a good description! Enjoyed
Heinlein's earlier stuff a lot, but sort of lost interest after
(during?) Stranger in a Strange Land.

Healer Althaia,

Heh heh, Way Station and Mastodonia are *my* two faves as
well...both were recommended by my father, who has an amazing
collection of science fiction (not a whole lot of fantasy,
which he mostly doesn't like...for that matter neither do I,
with some very notable exceptions, obviously :).

As far as Henderson goes, a few months ago, out of the blue,
this package showed up at my apartment...it was the new
anthology of Henderson stuff,...Dad doesn't go wild over those
stories but he knows I like them, and just sent them for the
heck of it (not for birthday or a holiday). Dad's really
cool :) He and Mom came to visit and half of what we did was
bookstore jaunts...that was *awesome* :)

This has nothing to do with birthdays, but your mention of being carded
made me laugh. I went to the Mall of America (commonly referred to as
either the megamaul or the megamess - I don't like it much) last night.
Well, they have this new policy that after some time (6:00, I think)
nobody under 16 is allowed in the mall without a parent. It's supposed to
be so that they don't have all the gang kids running around causing
trouble.

I got carded at the door. I'm 22, and they needed to see my ID to know I
was over 16. I know I look young, but I didn't think I looked that* young.

It made me laugh.

When I was 20, I went to see a movie at a theatre and the girl at the
ticket post asked me if I wanted student ticket. You're considered
student if you're 14! I was so stunned I told her my real age and paid
full price. I'm too honest.

I can beat that......couple of weeks ago I went to the jr. high to
pick up my 13 yr. old daughter for a Dr. app't. I was waiting outside
the door to the office and this woman came up wanting to know where my
hall pass was and how come I wasn't in class!
And I'm 41.

Guess I could dress better....it might have been the jeans and big
baggy jacket that threw her off...

The only time I can remember being carded was on my 21st birthday.
I actually didn't mind because my cover charge was returned with
a "Happy Birthday". I think it's funny actually, since I do look
younger than my 23 years. Just this summer I held a door for some
older women who commented "How old do you think she is...sixteen?"
They seemed a bit embarrased when I told them I was 22. Normally
I am not mistaken for anyone *that* young!

Hmm, makes an interesting change from the on-campus age assumptions:

Frat party door guy: You're over 21, right? (Then stamps hand without

bothering to check)

Me: uh...(oops, already past the door)

And I don't really look any older than eighteen, either. Not to imply
that I hang out at the frat parties a lot; they're mostly not my type of

Hey, the reverse isn't much funb either... before I reached the mature
old age of 25 or so, people always aged ten years... it may sound good
(nobody ever carded me, even when I was underage), but actually it
makes it harder to blend into a group... at first sight, people my age
would always think I was a _serious_, no-fun guy... this made some
years _very_ hard (but, on the plus side, it made me into what I am
today: people don't think I'm serious anymore... since I had to overdo
the funny side, I'm now something of a jester, or a fool... and a
happy one...). Try making friends of people who tend to avoid you...
