- Now for more Lord of the Rings DVD news. The Urban Cinephile website
recently posted an online interview with Barrie M. Osborne, who is a
producer on the DVD project. Here's an excerpt from the article which
pertains to the eventual DVD release of "Fellowship of the Ring": "As
for the DVD, Osborne promises it will be released just before the second
film is released theatrically, and it will have on it a longer cut. And
at some point, he admits, the 9-hour version of the trilogy ˆ- all
three films, end to end -- is also a distinct possibility."
We're also hearing that in addition to the longer cut, you can expect
numerous deleted scenes, audio commentary and extensive
behind-the-scenes material (all of which is arguably a given).
The DVD will at least be a 2 disc (and probably a 3-disc) release. And,
as
you've probably already heard (in recent comments by New Line's
president for worldwide distribution and marketing, Rolf Mittweg, on
TheOneRing.net), the disc is expected to be released in August, and
include an exclusive preview for the next installment, "The Two Towers".
Once upon a time, DH and a friend decided to watch the Star Wars
trilogy end to end. Needless to say, they were exhausted after the
effort and swore never to do it again. I wonder if there's a market
for this as anything but an oddity?

Oh, you mean the usual DVD stuff. <g> If it runs true to form, it'll
also have a snippet of a movie/book-related-game on it as well.

Dear me. What a lack of stamina! I (and friends) have done this
several times, both in-cinema and in-home on video. I'd say there is
a very big market, especially among the late-teen/early 20 age group
(I was about 25 when we started doing these). That reminds me, I
haven't done a 'Wars marathon in a while...
Az
Okay, what are the rules? Must you stay in your seat, or are you allowed to
walk around and get snacks and such, as long as you are within hearing
distance and can spout quotes along with the movie at the appropriate time?
Shaunesay
(who has never tried doing something like that, and is fairly certain
sitting still that long would be the end of her!)
I remember when my kids would give us a very quiet day when
they were younger...they would watch all three movies back-to-back.
(they are now 22-next-month and 19).

This news makes me even more determined to get a DVD player this year.
I've finally seen the film this afternoon: all I can say is
WOW!!!!
A few things were snipped that I would have liked to see, but the first
few minutes were
WOW!!!!
And then there were all the little in-jokes, and the great special
effects, which were all
WOW!!!!
Incidentally, I'm beginning to think all you Beanoholics might have a
point... =)

Bagginses, they steals our taglines, precioussss...
I haven't attempted a movie marathon, but we've done Red Dwarf and
Buffy the Vampire Slayer marathons several times. On a good day you
can get through about 8 or 9 hours of tape, including bathroom breaks
and munchie stops inbetween eps. :)
It's fun to watch stuff in a group, but it IS a bit hard on the
rear...

We used to have them on New Years Day when we were rather incapable of moving.
;) It happened quite by accident one year - we just popped in A New Hope, and it
went from there. We had oodles of fun, too. Stayed in our jammies all day long,
ate when we were hungry, and stayed up until about 3 AM. :)
You can totally sprout movie quotes while watching. In our case, we also made
sexual speculations about several characters, drooled over Han throughout all
three movies, and ahhhhhed over Luke when he was buffed in Degobah. ;)

In the cinema, you must sit in your seat, of course (except for the 15
- 20 minute break between movies, when you get snacks, empty the last
lot etc), although in a Dedicated Crowd you can quote along as needed.
An in-home Session allows any rules that all consider acceptable,
including stitching/crochet/knitting. We always allowed quoting,
using our Pop-Up, Glow-In-The-Dark Light Sabres during fight scenes,
grabbing of snacks and potty breaks as needed.

Oh yes, we're good at that around here too. We love to make plans... We
even make plans to make plans, and even those don't necessarily turn out the
*way* we planned, and almost certainly, any plans that were outlined during
that planning session, do not come out the way we planned them either! <G>

But, seriously, he is a damn fine actor. You don't get admitted to the
Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts unless you are. And hired by the Royal
Shakespearean company.
His range of roles is actually quite broad, once you start looking at
it.
'Sharpe', of course, but things like 'The Field' with Richard Harris (a
depressing Irish story), 'Bravo Two Zero' (a true story from the Gulf
War -- SAS. Just released on DVD), and 'Anna Karenina'.

Well, it's actually my mum who's the closest to a Beanaholic in the
family, she really likes Sharpe whenever it's on -- the most I'll go
for after watching LotR is that he's a great actor.

Never misinterpret a quote. For instance, "When you wish upon a star
your *dreams* come true." Not your *wishes* come true, your *dreams*.
In this particular case, it's the one where you went to school naked.
ARGH!!!! <Twitch, twitch> <thud>

I made a statement to a friend of mine when we walked into the
theatre.
"If this is any good, I'm buying a DVD player."
20 minutes into the film he leaned over and whispered: "Can you say
'DVD Player'?"
I just drooled...

ARGH!
<thump>
Saw the same preview.
I had to restrain the urge to crawl under the movie theater
seat.
First time I saw the preview, there was a half-second at the start
when I thought it might actually be a new Bond film - talk about
disapointment!

Got one for Christmas! Toshiba SD-1700. Hubby researched what we
needed/could use with current (non-digital) TV. Not expensive -- under
$150.
I *like* it. Now I have to save the pennies to get the favorite films
(that we currently have on VHS) on DVD. Sigh!

My kids 5 & 2 (the 8mo doesn't watch much) will watch Scooby all day if
allowed. We have at least 6 movies they have watched back to back on sick
days. The kind were you don't feel like doing anything but you don't feel
like sleeping sick.

Sorry... I don't buy it. Snowkitties don't do Innoskent very well... I
can tell that you're faking it by the smirk on your face and the cloud
of kinkies hovering over your shoulder.
I know what's 'gold' and so does any other woman'... It's the asset a
man has that is closest to any woman's heart, and that she'd just love
to get her hands on to play with for awhile. He might not like the
results though - a little massaging is fun but put too much pressure
on it and it's just plain painful.

POINT!!!
Although if his card gets *that* close to your heart, it's one of the
more unusual tools for murder I've heard of.
