Generation ship

When I was about twelve, I read a sci-fi book from my local library.

It starts with a <teenager?> in a class-room, being taught about 'How Things
Began and Where we are now'

This is not How Things Really Are, because they're on board a generation ship,
and that's not what's being taught.

He leaves the class-room and heads for an area that nobody else on board knows
about - a control centre, and he is the captain of this ship, passed on from
father to son for generations, but his dad must have died before Telling All

After that, I'm hazy about the story, and I've been trying to find this story
again, for the last 50 years.

(I now have a personal library exceeding 3000 SF books <g>)

Anyone ever come across a story starting like that?
