I have just read The Wasp Factory, by strange coincidence on the bus down
from Inverness to Glasgow. It is obvious that the setting is the North East
coast of Scotland, east of Inverness, but I wondered if anyone knew of the
EXACT setting for the island, porteneil etc (if they are not purely
fictional). I am guessing at the Findhorn / Kinloss / Burghead area, but
does anyone have any more info?

I'd always assumed it was the northern coast of the Firth, for some reason
that I have since long forgotten. My reaction when I first read it was
that it sounded a lot like Findhorn or some place, but further on
[possibly the bit where Frank has wandered up into the hills towards
the end of the book] I think there is something that points to a different
location.

It's actually set in Easter Ross where Banks was employed for a short time,
but the exact location is, I believe, fictional. I live about 15 minutes or so
from Findhorn, and can assure you that it's not based on anywhere around
here!

>The answer to this one appeared in issue seven of the excellent Iain Banks
Fanzine 'The Culture'. As part of their 'Iain Banks official tour of
Scotland' this entry was made for WP.

From Inverness, travel north east on the A9, turning off at the B9165
towards Porthahomack. This is where Iain stayed whilst working nearby at
Nigg. The coastal walks and beac to Inver would eventually spawn the idea
for WP. Though Frank's island doesn't actually exist, on a misty day, if you
look hard enough......
(cheers to Neil and David for this).
