None that's been mentioned here. Could be a good film though. Perhaps
directed by Bill Forsyth?

I believe IB was threatening to write the music himself

He's the right generation. Is he musical?

Last I heard a script had been written for ES and it seemed like a goer but
beyond that?
Wasn't there a BBC radio show with music by "Frozen Gold"? I don't know if it
was a radio play of ES or just a fake music documentary on the band. The music
has definitely been written and performed though.

There was a radio adaptation a few years ago on Radio 4. It was probably
that.

Yeah, it was very good as I recall (though I missed ep one). Though Frozen
Gold did not sound like I expected them to and 'Gregory' as Weird was just
wrong. A pity it was never released on tape of CD (I think)
I thought so. I'll agree that he doesn't come to mind as the obvious choice
of casting. Alan ?Curran? (the one from the air steward series) may make it
work though.

I've found a review of it. Seems to imply it was IB's music.

On the subject of Espedair Street, my daughter went to nursery with a girl
called Inez whose parents had called her that after reading the book. I was
the only person who didn't say, "what an unusual name". I just asked if
they'd read much Iain Banks.

Is the Fish ( ex Marillion ) connection still going?
He's stated frequently that it's his favourite book and was touting the
idea of playing Weir ie:
From the Fish News Archive 97/8:
>Hmm, interesting news from the Iain Banks mailing list. Camilla Roskelley
responded to a message about Espedair Street - some of you will know that
this is one of Fish's favourite books and he identifies with Danny Weir,
the main character - she says:
"... from the fanzine, The Culture, Issue 6, Banks gave the film rights to
Roger Gray as a birthday present, provided he (Banks) could do the music
for the proposed film. Fish of Marillion is mentioned as playing Weird,
'very provisional[ly]' and Union Films (Crow Road) might be in a joint
production with an American company, Intermedia. At the time of issue 6 the
project was still in the planning stage, which means that money was being
sought, inter alia." <
And from May 99:
>Ian Oakley:I have heard that they are going to start filming Iain Banks'
book 'Espedair Street'. I think that this has always been one of your
favourite books. And I think I read that you have said before that you
would love to play the main character Danny Weir. [It could almost have
been written with Fish in mind].
Fish: The truth is Ian, that there is no Espedair Street yet. There's been
no funding organized although the rights were sold about a year ago.<
