Apologies if i am on the wrong board,
regards,
jay.
According to Ashley and Contento's SUPERNATURAL INDEX, the only story called
'Dream Ghost' is by one Sydney J. Bounds, and it has only appeared in one
anthology: THE EIGHTH ARMADA GHOST BOOK (London: Armada, ISBN 0-00-691142-0,
1976, 127pp, pbk, orig. price 40p), edited by Mary Danby. The contents are:
'The Terrible Gaoler' by Rosemary Timperley
'Sarah' by Roger Malisson
'Sir Harry Mortlake's Clock' by Joyce Marsh
'The Haunted Pillar-Box' by Rosemary Timperley
'Dream Ghost' by Sydney J. Bounds
'Crusoe's Parrot' by Rick Ferreira
'The Girl in the Mirror' by Margot Arnold
'Takeover' by David Langford
'A Red, Red Rose' by Ruth Cameron
'The Woodseaves Ghosts' by Catherine Gleason
'The Haunted River' by Charles Thornton
'Time After Time' by Mary Danby
Again according to the SUPERNATURAL INDEX, the only story called 'Devil
Horse' is by Patricia Leitch; its only appearance was in THE TWELFTH ARMADA
GHOST BOOK (London: Armada, ISBN 0-00-691670-0, 1980, 126pp, pbk, orig.
price 75p), edited by Mary Danby. The contents are:
'Someone Drowned' by Tony Richards
'The Chess Set' by David Langford
'Devil Horse' by Patricia Leitch
'The Proving' by Terry Tapp
'The Cat Room' by R. Chetwynd-Hayes
'Kept In' by Rosemary Timperley
'Studderley Tower' by Joyce Marsh
'Dressed for the Occasion' by Terry Tapp
'The Haunted Village' by Sydney J. Bounds
'The Red Miller' by Mary Danby
There's no indication that these volumes were ever combined into one bumper
volume, nor do either of the stories you singled out appear in any other
collections; these were their sole appearances. Danby did put together a
volume called THE GREEN GHOST AND OTHER STORIES in 1989, a collection of 42
stories taken from the Armada ghost anthologies, but neither of the stories
you mention was included.
Danby edited some 37 anthologies over the years, but if you're looking for
those two stories then this information might narrow the search somewhat. .

Barbara
Don't know if this helps, but the "Bumper Book of Ghost Stories"
contained 19 tales, including work by:
Rosemary Timperley, Kay Leith, Mary Danby, Christine Pullein-Thompson,
Julia Birley and Sydney J. Bounds... As to whether or not this is the
book in question, I can't say.
Of course, now I'm curious as to whether or not the Thompson is one
that I have or a tale that's eluded me thus far...

I'm not sure whether the information that follows actually helps, but
Rick Kennett wrote an article on the _Ghost Book_ series that appeared
in _All Hallows_, Issue 20 (Feb 1999). Rick noted therein:
"Since the 1950s Pan Books had been reprinting the various volumes of
_The Ghost Book_ in paperback, bringing out the later edition usually
two years after their hardback appearance. Volume six was split into
two parts, while volumes ten and eleven were published together in a
single thick paperback as _The Bumper Book of Ghost Stories_; likewise
volumes twelve and thirteen were published together as _The Second
Bumper Book of Ghost Stories_. Pan went on to produce two more large
volumes in the _Bumper Book_ series in 1980 and 1981, and although
they were not incarnations of _The Ghost Book_ -- sourced instead from
_The Midnight Ghost Book_ (Barrie & Jenkins, 1978) and _The After
Midnight Ghost Book_ (Hutchinson & Co., 1980) -- they were in a very
real sense descendents of that prestigious anthology published
fifty-five years earlier by that 'Friend and Patron of Ghosts and of
their Creators', Lady Cynthia Asquith."
Assuming that the stories referred to by Jay did indeed appear in one
of the _Bumper_ books, it's possible to ascertain from additional
information in the article that they didn't appear in either the first
or the second. But I haven't been able to determine which, if any, of
the ensuing _Bumper_ books contained them. (The third and fourth
volumes in the series appear to have been edited by James Hale,
however, and not Mary Danby.)

The third and fourth Bumper books were indeed edited by James Hale, but
neither contain the stories to which Jay referred. Their only appearance
seems to have been in the two Armada anthologies I mentioned earlier; they
weren't subsequently singled out for inclusion in any of the omnibuses
(unless there's another Bumper book that's been published since Ashley and
Contento's SUPERNATURAL INDEX came out c. 1994.

Hey everyone,
The bumper book I was referring to did indeed contain a story called
the red miller, as well as devils horse, and dream ghost was by Sydney
J bounds. The latter also included a story called "the ghost train".
It's looking a lot like this book was indeed a reprint of the earlier
armada books. If only I could get hold of its contents list.
Incedently, on a separate issue, i've been trying to track down 2
ghost stories an old teacher once told us in school. One was about a
demonic cat- Not edgar allen poe's tale- this was about a ginger cat
and a homeless man who continually pestered the narrater until he
murdered him, the man returned as the cat and destroys the narrater's
life, similar to poe's tale.
The second was about a man who was laid out in his coffin in a church
vault a hundred years ago- but he turned out not to be dead and was
eaten by the rats down there.the tale follows two sceptical ghost
hunters investigating- one of whom gets locked in the vault and
witnesses the horror repeat itself.
if anyone has any information?

ps. not to be a pain, but now you've got me a little hooked on the
Armada series as a whole, ive searched the net, but can't find any
info other that who edited each edition,
wondering if some kind person who owns that encyclopedia would go to
the trouble of listing out the contents of the books (ie story and
author, much like was done above with the twelfth edition).I think it
may be the only way im going to track all the stories that were in
"the bumper book" that i read.

What else do you know about these Armada anthologies? Were they aimed at
adults or younger readers? Were they generally written to a high standard?
Apart from Langford, I only recognize Chetwind-Hayes and Timperley in these
two you've listed. Were the other authors known from other genres?

Thank you very much for taking the time to do that.It is much appreciated.

Jay.
I was still curious about the whole "bumper book of ghost stories
affair", were they reprints of the above series?Doing a search i came
across this and was wondering if anyone has the lists of stories(
taken from the article) referred to above?
>In addition to the 3 "Ghost Books" edited by Lady Asquith, I have a
4th
>edited by James Turner. Were there any others? Can someone explain
the
>connection between the 4th volume and the other 3--I know it features
>many of the same writers, but was it originally Asquith's project? I
>haven't read the Turner volume yet, but the 3 Asquith's are all
>certainly classics (I can't think of any anthologies of original
stories
>that I like better--in any genre).
To quote from Rick Kennett's article on the series from All Hallows 20
(Feb. 1999):
"By then [1977] it had published 224 stories (and one poem) by 122
authors, all contemporary.... The first three volumes were edited by
Cynthia Asquith, volume four by James Turner, five to nine by Rosemary
Timperley, ten and eleven by Aidan Chambers, twleve by Polly Parkins
(anonymously), and thirteen by James Hale."
10 and 11 were published together in pb as The Bumper Book of Ghost
Stories, and 12 and 13 as The Second Bumper Book of Ghost Stories.
Accompanying the article is a complete list of the stories in the
series, by author.
But don't take my word for it, buy the back issue and then subscribe
to All Hallows ASAP!

I don't come cheap, Jim! Actually, no - I don't have any of those
anthologies. I've got an old second-hand copy of Thou Shall Not Suffer
a Witch, but I don't know if it includes those stories...it's hidden
away in a box somewhere with lots of other books, waiting to be moved
to my new apartment and unpacked (probably around 2010 at the rate I'm
going!).

Hi Guys,
I am back to rack your brains again ( Those of you with the
supernatural encyclopedia that is)
The series I was originally looking for entitled " The Bumper book Of
ghost stories " was not the one we were discussing above. It was indeed
reprints of the earlier Armada books but was published between
1991-1993 by harper collins, specificly for "School Book Fairs".
The books are currently out of print so i can't track the stories they
contained.
I'm wondering if anyone A.Knows how many books were in this series (
I'm currently aware of 3:one edited by Mary Danby in 1991, another in
1993 and a third edited by Pamela oldfield in 1993)
B. which stories these reprints contained.

I've been searching for these books since I began this thread weeks
ago-with no luck- at least if i know the contents and how many were in
the series, i could perhaps attempt to track the stories individually.
Thanks in advance,

Jay, the contents are the same, they're just later reprints. There are
quite a few copies listed for sale

Jay, I forgot to mention in my earlier response: there is no mention
of any other 'Bumper Book of Ghost Stories' (other than the ones I
already listed, that is) in The Supernatural Index. There's certainly
nothing listed as being edited by Pamela Oldfield. If some later
editions of the books have fewer stories they may just be abridged
versions of the originals. I can find no other reference to them in
The Supernatural Index.
