Latest News: Ash-Tree's issue of Bernard Capes' THE
BLACK REAPER is out, as is Charon's reissue of THE
STONE DRAGON by R. Murray Gilcrist. John Pelan warns
of an impending announcement from Midnight House
regarding their first title to be released. I've
added links to sites on Blackwood, Machen, and Dunsany.
Charter: "Dedicated to the discussion of the very best
supernatural fiction, focusing especially on --but not
limited to-- the literature growing out of the classic
English ghost stories of the Victorian and Edwardian
periods."
Authors discussed will include early ground-breakers
such as J. Sheridan LeFanu, M.R. James, and William Hope
Hodgson through modern day greats such as Robert Aickman,
Ramsey Campbell, and Terry Lamsley. A FAQ will be posted
on a regular basis, a weekly "read, then discuss" session
is planned as well. While film discussion is not the
purpose of the group, discussions of films with a ghostly
basis or based on a famous ghost story are considered to
be on-topic. Posting of supernatural books for sale
is permitted. Spamming is unwelcome, as is trolling or
random acts of senseless flaming.

Are there any ghostly titles by mainstream publishers?
Ghosts on the Internet (or in the Mall)
This is a listing of titles you can pick up from Amazon.com or
perhaps find at your local bookseller. I used Amazon's search
engine to come up with this list. Almost all the titles were
said to be available in "2 to 3 days". All are priced under $28
retail, and you can expect another 10-30% off from Amazon. I was
pleasantly surprised by the number of titles I found, being picky
I came up with 30+ titles that are well worth a closer look. My
listing format is title, author or editor, publisher, and retail
price. In the case where the book's title contains the author's
name, I don't bother listing the author name. If anyone orders
one of these and finds it's gone out of print, please email me
and I'll pull it from the list.

GREAT TALES OF TERROR AND THE SUPERNATURAL H. Wise Mod Lib 22.00
The Wise book is over 1000 pages and is a fantastic way to pick up a
bunch of classic stories in a single book. I don't think the Hodgson
and Machen books are really classed as "ghost" titles but they are
horror classics and worth getting regardless. The Gordon and Westall
titles are recent but are very much in the "classic" ghostly style.
The Dalby TALES OF WITCHCRAFT and VAMPIRE STORIES, by their contents
listings, have many of the important ghost authors represented and
are of interest, even though the stories are not ghostly. The Rolt
title is quite rare and not often reprinted, this trade paper edition
features the two stories added in to the Ash-Tree edition for a total
of fourteen stories. THE OXFORD BOOK OF GOTHIC TALES, while not a
ghost anthology, features an interesting lineup, including Frederick
Cowles in a rare appearance.
<>
I'm new to this ghost stuff, can you recommend some titles to
get started with?
If you're looking for a great "one book" horror/ghost collection,
then go with GREAT TALES OF TERROR AND THE SUPERNATURAL. If you
already have some horror collections and want to get a more ghost-
centric volume go with THE OXFORD BOOK OF ENGLISH GHOST STORIES as
a start and get THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN GHOST
STORIES as a follow-up. From these you should get an idea what
authors you might like to pursue story collections of.
<>
I'm on a book budget, is there any hope for me?
Well if you can raise three bucks (skip lunch one day), you could
pick up these:
THE MOONLIT ROAD AND OTHER GHOST AND HORROR STORIES
Ambrose Bierce Dover 1.00
GREAT GHOST STORIES John Grafton, ed. Dover 1.00
GREEN TEA AND OTHER GHOST STORIES J.S. Le Fanu Dover 1.00
The Grafton edited anthology is a nice value for the dollar, as it
contains ten stories by names like James (M.R.), Swain, Benson (E.F.),
and LeFanu. Ghost-heads will have all of these stories already.
