This passage describes Democrats and Republicans alike. Notice that Orwell makes little or no
distinction between left-wing Communists and right-wing Nazis -- they are both totalitarians.
The Party of Oceania, however, is clearly supposed to be left-wing socialist party, since Ingsoc
is derived from "English Socialism."
Orwell makes the same connection between socialism and totalitarianism in Animal Farm, with a
revolution that is obviously a parody of the Russian Bolshevik revolution. The socialist goal
of equality is finally achieved, with the pigs (the Party) being more equal than the lower
animals (the proles). Rightist capitalists like Rick Perry are not exactly known for espousing
equality -- capitalism is inherently unequal; it is leftist socialists who preach equality, with
themselves being more equal than the proles in whose name they rule.
Of all the candidates from both ruling parties, Rick Perry frightens me the most. Barack Obama
may have his little Kool-Aid Kult, but he is shallow and vacuous and really has no vision --
good or bad -- for America's future. Rick Perry DOES have a vision for America's future -- a
theofascist police state amid the ruins of the nuclear apocalypse he caused. There is something
in his eyes, something truly evil, along with his holier-than-thou Jesus-up-his-fucking-ass
righteousness that reminds me strongly of John Ensign, only much more dangerous.
