Since I'm fairly new to the NG, I'll add to this roll call as well:
Name: Diane Susan (Tamburri) Kowalewski
DoB: 9-19-52
Marital Status: Married 5-20-72--husband, Joe
Children: 3--Derek, 12-28-74; Keira, 11-22-78; Tegan, 11-3-81
Religion: Catholic(lapsed)
Pets: Eadie's Dark Shadow (12 year old sable Oriental Shorthair), Angel
(6 y.o. cream & white Border Collie/Golden Lab mix), and Cookie (almost
2 y.o. black & white spca adoptee cat that belongs to my daughter but
hangs with me)
Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, baby boomer and oldest of two.
Lived outside the city briefly back in '72-'73, but moved back before
the birth of my first child. Introduced to KK's work in 1971 when my
brother found Deryni Rising in the local library, read it, and handed
it off to me knowing I would enjoy it. Waiting for(!), buying and
reading (in order of issue) these books ever since. No Codex, though;
an oversight on my part.
Studied art and fashion design, worked briefly in the garment industry
until I realized it was not for me. Besides wife and mother, I've been
an embroidery pattern illustrator, a pattern drafter, a fashion
illustrator, a bridal seamstress, a vocalist, a waitress, a costumer, a
graphic designer, an environmental illustrator, and a miniatures
artisan specializing in one inch scale medieval and renaissance musical
instruments, branching off into furniture and houses. (That's
dollhouse stuff to the uninitiated, but I like mine with a historical
flavor.)
I enjoy reading, mostly fantasy and SF (cut teeth on Tolkien at 14,
also love McKillip, Hambly, McCaffrey, and Willis to name a few), and
(what else?) medieval history (researching the everyday and the mundane
things); cooking, herb gardening, drinking tea and eating home-baked
anything; writing (the impossible novel, short stories, songs, poetry),
playing my recorders, twiddling the guitar, building Ren Faire costumes
for my family and friends, faux and mural wall painting, miniature
woodworking, and last, but not least, listening to and making music.
And on that note, I met my husband in a rock band my best friend and I
organized. I've been a vocalist with various bands over the years, but
now I it sit out and enjoy the next generation. Music is in the blood
(my father played big band trombone and later, drums; my brother, the
drums since the age of three); husband plays keyboards, two of our kids
play also, bass and keyboards. Everybody sings, but not together. The
musical differences in one household boggle the mind. My personal
listening likes are progressive rock, jazz, early music and some
classical (Bach, Mozart).
I love my hubby, my kids and their significant others, my family and my
pets.
I dislike ignorance, insincerity and dishonesty in people; mundane
cleaning chores and our current kitchen remodeling, all my unfinished
projects, fleas and ticks (anything that sucks blood, for that matter),
and current adolescent fashion leanings (yes, two children of my body
have tattoos and body piercings):~P
And that's about it!

Guess I'm next!
Name: Melissa Jeanae McCullough
Born: 10-08-73, Ventura, California
Currently: Phoenix, AZ
Divorced, but back together with ex-husband Thom. (THAT is a story and a half!)
No kids, and unfortunately no pets. :{
Religion: Protestant (raised in Baptist church)
Born in Ventura but raised in Santa Barbara county, halfway between San
Francisco and Los Angeles. Moved to AZ in the spring of '98 but moved back to
Cali for a while, then moved back to AZ in spring of '99. Introduced to KK's
books in 1987, while muddling through the Sci-Fi section at B.Dalton's in the
local mall(started with Deryni Archives). Last book purchased in the series:
The Bastard Prince, while Thom and I were living the military life in Northern
California. Had no idea anyone else in the world had ever read KK until the
advent of the Internet. *grin*
Graduated HS 1991, various and sundry retail jobs until (and after) marriage to
Thom in '92. Moved to Northern California in '94 after Thom entered USAF in
'93. Began work as a temp (Weighmaster at a fruit dehydrator, secretary at an
oil refinery, secretary at an apartment complex), then more retail up to our
divorce in '95. Went to Business College, became a real secretary in a legal
copy office, then became a data processor(proof) in a local bank. Fell into
temping again for local hospital(long term), moved back to AZ and temped in a
medical insurance co., then moved back to Cali and became receptionist for home
health agency. Moved back to AZ again and joined up with a major
airline(reservations).
When I'm not working, reading KK or poring over the Internet, I like to cook,
bake, shop, read, write(see my .sig for my homepage addy), talk on the phone to
my best friend(who just happens to be my mother!), watch Cartoon Network,
listen to my wackily varied music collection (everything from Ozzy to Sarah
Brightman),collect cobalt glass, and share Thom's passion for racing his '92
Ford Mustang LX coupe (14.50 in the 1/4 mile!). I also have been known to put
up with his parents (my former in laws, how weird is that?) from time to
time...
Neeeeeeext?

Original fanficton and art
Well, I've been reading this newsgroup for years and have loved the specs,
but this is my first post, as I access the net at work.
Name: Lynn Dahleen
DOB: May 28, 1962
Pets: 2 cats, approx 8 years old, one male named Alaric (his personality
is very demanding) and one male named Tygon (named by some students in my
lab).
Marital Status: Single
Bio: I've been reading The Deryni books since I was in high school (a long
time ago) and try to get the new ones as soon as they come out. I do own
a Codex, which was a bit of a challenge to get up here in Fargo. I grew
up
in Wisconsin, did a BS in Genetics at UW-Madison, on to Lexington KY for
an MS in Crop Science, and then to St. Paul MN for a PhD in Plant Breeding
and Genetics. I've been in Fargo for 10 years researching the genetics of
barley (or as we like to say - building a better beer). I read a variety
of science fiction authors, with the Miles series by Bujold being my
current favorite (besides the Deryni books). I'm an avid gardener, which
is tough this time of year as our ground is covered with snow but winter
gives me time to decide which section of lawn to take out in the spring to
expand my gardens. Well, I guess I should get back to work now.
I have two amazing children, Aidan Alexander(will be 3 in april) and
Gillian Leigh(3 months)http://ravyn.hey.nu and hit the pictures link if
you want to see how beautiful they are. We lived in Texas for 5 years
(my wife was there for 10). When my wife found out she was pregnant
with our second, she looked at me and said, "I am spending the summer
in NJ, not here. Where are you going to be?" Well, I went job hunting
the next day:)
I am a software developer currently looking for another job because I
am bored with supporting applications- I want to develop them:) I
can't leave this job until June, unless anyone is willing to lend me 5K
to pay back the money they gave me to move up here:)
I love to read(Battlefield Earth is current book, along with Brother
Initiate)ski, swim, and most importantly - spend time with my family.
I have studied various forms of Martial Arts for about 12 years now,
and I enjoy most things that are related to Eastern ways of thinking.
I have never been to Japan, but I am working on it:)
That's about it. I am 6'2", brown hair, green eyes. Played football
in college(kicker), been a pretty regular life.

Snip
Here's another old-timer for the Roll Call:
Name: Melissa Houle
Date of Birth: February 5th, 1963
Religion: Lapsed Cadillac. (Busted down to a Lincoln Continental.)
Okay, now you know the worst about me, I'm irreverent. I was given a
very secular upbringing, the legacy of both sides of my family, but our
background is universally Protestant. These days I would say I have a
nodding, non-hostile relationship with Christianity. I believe in God,
and have no trouble loving Jesus, but am agnostic enough not to be sure
which denomination it is that I don't belong to. What I don't like
about organized religion is when people of any faith allow religious
fervor to get the better of their common sense. "Holy War" is one of
the biggest Oxymorons I can think of.
Introduction to the Deryni Books: I can't remember the exact date, but
it was one hot summer day in the mid-70's. I was being an annoying
little sister. Being the nice person she is, my older sister handed me
a paperback book. "Go read this," she told me. "And quit bugging me!"
That book was _Deryni Rising_. I read the whole first trilogy and loved
them, but glory be, I didn't know about the Camber books, then. Flash
forward to Thanksgiving break, 1984. I was home from college, browsing
around in a local bookstore and there was _The Bishop's Heir! I was
thrilled to have a new Deryni book to read, naturally. <G> After that,
I found the first Camber trilogy, and have been completely hooked ever
since. I also love Lord of the Rings, which I’ve been re-reading
lately. Couple of nights ago, I had a dream that a great big spider
had taken over my dining room with its web. Either I’ve been reading
too much about Mordor and Shelob, or I need to do some serious
housecleaning! I also love Guy Gavriel Kay, Jane Austen, Leo Tolstoy,
and have been privileged to read some of Rob’s recent short stories.
Hometown: I was born in Stanford Hospital, and lived in Palo Alto
California in the San Francisco Bay Area all my life until I went to
College. Came back after Graduation and settled in Mountain View, one
town South of P.A. I work as a half time Library Assistant at the
Cupertino Branch of the Santa Clara County Library system, and am
accumulating useful job experience as a Reference Librarian. I worked
at a retail Science store directly after college where I was expected
to vacuum the carpets with a generally non-operational vacuum cleaner,
and to walk my boss’s ancient dog, Sam. Now I LIKE dogs, but Sam was
very old and smelly, and moved with the speed of a drugged slug. There
was also some personal tension between me and my boss. I was a doormat
then, and put up with the situation and with Nancy for far too long. I
finally woke up, and thought “This job is for the birds!” and went
back to school to get my Library Technical Assistant’s certification.
One of the better practical decisions I’ve ever made.
Married Status: Single.
Kids: None, which is fortunate in view of my answer to the last
question. <G> I’m not noticeably maternal.
Cats: Two. Isadora, a domestic black and white spotted shorthair with
big golden eyes and a very assertive personality, and Panther, also a
Domestic Shorthair, but of a more Siamese/Burmese build. His fur is
about the color of black coffee, and he has green eyes. Very shy with
everyone else, but affectionate and possessive with me. Both of them
gradually got used to Donald’s presence while he was staying with me
last month.
Interests/Things I like to do: I like architecture – my sister and I
like to walk around in nice neighborhoods, and choose the houses we’d
like to buy (in our dreams, of course). I like to browse in bookstores,
shop in general, listen to classical and Celtic music, and the new
Australian CD Donald gave me for xmas, Listen to/quote Monty Python,
get together with other local KK fans. I like to cook, bake, do needle
point projects, write and of course, work on my various water color
painting projects. Oh yes, and surf the ‘net.

Ok, My turn. My name is Deborah Lanigan, although I mostly use Debbie.
I'm 29+ years old (and how much more is a deep dark secret). I was born in
a tiny place in saskatchewan Canada, one of the places that , if you have
not lived in the area, you've never heard of it. When I was 4 we moved to
Nelson BC, a nidce town whose only major accomplishment of note was to be
the site for the filming of most of the movie Roxanne. I was born and
raised Catholic, and am still active in my church. I'm single, sometimes I
feel a bit too single, and I really do not see marrage in my future, even
though I would like to be married. I work as a commercial cook, in a large
food manufacturing plant. Our products are sold in grocery stores
throughout western Canada. I am a devout cat person, and only my apartment
no-pets rule prevents me from being owned by at least one person of the
feline race. I first encountered KK, and Deryni in '73, shortly after HD
was released, and am kicking myself that I didn't even know about the codex
until this year when I finally got a 'puter and on the net. Aside from KK,
I also enjoy reading Anne MacCaffrey, Robert Jordan, Melanie Rawn, E.E.
"Doc" Smith, and (blush) David Eddings. I love music, and my favorite
musician is Mike Oldield, although I also enjoy J.M.Jarre, Moody Blues, CCR,

Seems like your new bio folder is more of a success than mine was a few months
back! I for one am glad, so here is my contribution:
Name: Linda Richardson
Born: 7 September long ago and far away (Detroit, in fact); as a baby moved
toand grew up in Tennessee
Pets: Charlotte and Sally (cats); Sugar (dog, and dont' you forget it!)
Marital Status: single and satisfied
Religion: Protestant Unitarian (but certain I was Catholic in some former
life, probably a nun or monk)
I feel a comment on religion is required to explain all of that. I grew up as
a generic Christian, joined the Methodist Church as a pre-teen, but have
attended various other churches in my lifetime. I am most affected by music,
of which the Unitarian Church has little, unfortunately, though their precepts
and openness are the most attractive in terms of belief structures. I am drawn
to the ritual of the medieval church in KK's work and to the architecture of
Gothic and Romanesque churches and I have loved Gregorian chant sinch long
before it became "cool"; but I don't buy into the "only path to the Father"
aspect of Christianity or to any sort of religious fanaticism.
Bio Stuff:
As noted, I grew up in Middle Tennessee, out in the country from the little
town where I now live and teach high school English and German. I taught a
couple of years after undergrad school, then spent the next many in grad school
full or part time. I first got hooked on KK's books when searching for a
subject for my master's thesis and wanting something in the fantasy area to
write on, alreading being a devout Tolkienite at the time. So that is how my
MA thesis turned out to be on KK's work, and how I began corresponding with her
a LONG time back. I read everyone else as well, when I have time: MZB,
McCaffery, Wrede, Mary Stewart, anything Arthurian, lots of mysteries, and
James Herriot many times over.
Interests:
Well, teaching is more than a job. Tthis coming summer (my god, only 4 months
from now!) I am taking a large group of students to Europe. This is a first
time for me, but I can hardly wait. I am into photography sometimes,
needlework at others, writing forever, and assorted other enthusiasms that
don't involve a great deal of physical exertion. Anticipated hightlights of my
trip to Euroe this summer will be meetings with other NG members there. I am
enthusiastic about it because meeting those I did at Darkover this past
November was so great!
Ummm. . .there is much more to tell, but I will leavi ti there and go read the
rest of the NG postings.

This is, I suspect, more than anyone would ever want to know.

I first read High Deryni when travelling with my family in 1983 (at age
14) I found it in a bookstore in Topeka,KS and was immediately hooked.
I got a lot of questions about the book St. Camber at my Catholic grade
school :). I went to college at Northwestern in Chicago and moved back
to Wichita,KS after graduation.
I am looking forward to KKB, getting my hands on a codex, and reading

Name: Deborah Lemieux
Birthdate: February 27, 1971
Pets: none right now -- my apartment doesn't allow for them.
Marital Status: single, but looking
Religion: Catholic turned agnostic
Bio:
Well, I was born and raised in Utah, and I am the youngest of four. I
attended parochial schools from kindergarten on (which explains my change in
religious preference). I attended the University of Utah where I received a BA
in History in 1994, and a BA in Anthropology in 1997. After my history degree,
I took about four years off to work in the real world -- and did nothing with
my degree. I was involved with customer service for a Carpet Cleaning
business, and later changed jobs to become a secretary for a United Church of
Christ parish. After two years there, I decided that I had better get into
grad school so I could find employment in an area that I enjoyed (i.e.
anthropology). I went back to the U of U and finished up the anthropology
requirements before being accepted into Ball State University's Graduate
Program in 1998. I am in my final semester of coursework here in Muncie,
Indiana. While my thesis, which is not done yet, is archaeologically focused,
I am more fascinated with cultural systems. I expect to be here for one more
year before moving back west -- I miss the mountains!
I first discovered KK when I was in Junior High, and instantly fell in
love with the books. It was the prose and the descriptions of the times that
fueled my interest in medieval history, which then transformed itself to an
interest in anthropology. So, thank you KK for helping me find the one area of
study that I love <g>. Aside from KK, I tend to read an eclectic range of
literature, but tend to focus on sci-fi and fantasy. Not much else to say, and
I've got to get to a study session.

"Understanding is a three-edged sword."
--Kosh, Babylon 5
My longtime friend, Jeff Elliot, used to do tons of interviews back in the
days when we both had dark hair (actually, when he had any hair at all!);
most of the early ones were with SF and fantasy writers (later he began
talking to heads of state, but that's another story). He sold an interview
with KK to Fantasy Newsletter in 1980, and then proposed a collection of
several such pieces to Borgo. We published Fantasy Voices in 1982. A
couple of years later, I started a series of detailed literary
bibliographies, again based mostly on SF and fantasy writers, and wrote to
Katherine, proposing that we prepare one on her. I had always liked her
work, and I very much preferred doing something on a writer whose work I
enjoyed than just any old sod. She invited Mary and me to her home in Sun
Valley, and we spent a very pleasant afternoon there, going through her
books and manuscripts, while Mary madly scribbled down the details. I think
it was during our conversations that day, after viewing KK's detailed
background genealogies and notebooks, that I suggested doing an A-to-Z guide
to her work. It took me years to find the time to finish the biblio, and
even longer to do the Codex, after repeated promptings from You-Know-Who.
That's why I said that the last time I was early was when I was born, and
even then, I waited till afternoon to make my appearance.
I've met a great many writers in my day, starting with Baycon in 1968, where
I was taken in hand by that delightful old couple, Edmond Hamilton and Leigh
Brackett, whose kindness and generosity to a green kid from nowhere will
never ever be forgotten--so long as I live, anyway. Sure, I encountered a
few bad seeds over the years, but not very many, and Katherine was one of
the best: open, generous, forthcoming, gracious. She always treated me as
another professional, even though my antecedents were essentially scholarly.
When I looked at her world and said, "Ya know, if X and Y are true, then Z
must follow," she gulped and hesitated, and then replied, "You're right." I
can't think of another writer who would have given that response. See, most
authors sport fairly large egos. It's an essential part of the camouflage:
it keeps you going during those dark days when you're muttering to yourself
about the execrable tastes of the editors and publishers and even, alack,
some of the fans. Ya gotta keep psyching yourself up, constantly repeating
the mantra, "my stuff's really good, my stuff's really good, they just don't
appreciate it." Hey, I've been chained in that dungeon many a time.
But Katherine's always been very supportive, a very easy person with whom to
work. And in return, I try to keep the faith, and to provide good copy that
will require a minimum of revision and editing on her part. That's my job.
It's also my inclination. And now that I'm also doing some of my own work,
I must at least amuse myself. If I can't do that much, how can I interest
anyone else?
It's funny, but I've discovered that the effort involved in preparing a
particular story isn't always indicative of the quality. I really slaved
over "Saving Jane Austen" last month, trying to get the period (1801) just
right, trying to get Jane herself properly framed. And it's a good story.
But I like "After All" as well, and it just poured out onto the paper, a
veritable deluge of words gushing forth within a few days. Of course, the
real reason I like "AA" is because the leading character, Charlie, shares a
number of commonalities with moi, although he's a wee bit crazier (well, not
much!). I was sitting through a really dull play at the university in
November, and after several dei ex machina, told Mary, "I can do better than
this," and at intermission jotted some notes down on the back of the program
about a guy coping with ultimate loneliness by talking to his amigas, las
cucarachas (see, S & M, you were right!).
And then there's "Academentia," a little dystopia which I started in 1994 or
'95, put aside for want of an ending, and then finished in early December.
It's the darkest vision I've ever spawned, and it must be me, because I
wrote it, but danged if I know where it came from. You ladies out there,
you won't like this one at-tall, nosiree; no saving Grace here. Although,
as Mary has noted, even "Academentia" has a kinda upbeat ending. But you
will like the tales of the Elders, I think. Just remember, they all came
from the same seriously-eroded mind.
Cheers for now:

We also have a dog, Salsa, 2 cats, Bright Eyes and Spats, and 16 chickens. No
names on the chickens, although my husband wanted to name them things like
Cordon Bleu and Soup. It was vetoed. I was born in a small town south of
Pittsburgh, PA called Belle Vernon (which means beautiful green) and havent
lived there since I got married. I married my high school sweetheart when he
graduated from college. We have moved 16 times in 23 years (job changes and
transfers) and my kids have been born in 6 different states.
My oldest sister introduced me to the sci-fi/fantasy genre of books by giving
me my first copy of Lord of the Rings when I was in seventh grade. I then
moved on to C.S.Lewis, Piers Anthony, Anne McCaffrey, and obviously KK. I love
reading but at the moment I barely have time. I am enjoying all the stories
that everyone else is writing, although I am quite frustrated at the time lapse
between chapters on some of them. (Sorry for the impatience, but I use most of
my patience up on the kids).
My oldest daughter is applying for college this year and I am feeling old. My
next two children are football players and I LOVE to watch them play. Typical
proud mom, I guess. I homeschool the 12, 7, and 4 year old. The two year old
I just try to keep out of trouble. If she makes it to be 3, we will be lucky.
If I do say so myself, I am a darn good cook, and am in the process of starting
a catering service, specializing in Tex-Mex cooking. (We spent 8 of the last
11 years in South Texas). We are currently living in Cincinnati, quite a
switch. We are hoping that General Motors (my husbands job) will let us alone
here for a while so that the older kids will graduate here.
And now with that said, Susan just came in and smells like a dragon. I guess I

Yes, they typically refer to it as the U of U...probably to avoid confusion
when we play against BYU (Brigham Young University), or Utah State (USU), etc.

OK, I had been encouraged by a couple of people (and you know who you
are) to submit my bio last fall, but because I am a highly private
individual, I have been hesitant. However, I have been hashing things
around in my head and have finally decided on what I can write. Sooooo
Here goes:
A Little about me
Name: Laura Bell Allen Arms
Born: 20 Jan 1960,in Wellsboro PA
Pets: 2 dogs (Gracie and Ginger, the most loyal of the pets) and 1 cat
(Lovely, named by my 8 year old and has taken the name to heart and
truly believes she is the most lovely thing God ever created. A true
cat)
Martial status: Happily married to a wonderful man for what will be 18
years on May 29, 2000
Religion: Raised Wesleyan, Converted to Lutheran
Bio stuff:
I was born in a small town in Pennsylvania...Ooh wait,... I
guess you probably don't want me to go back that far do you? In that
case I will move things along a little bit. (Although, in reality, the
present course of my life does take me back to an incident that
happened when I was in third grade.) My mother took me to a missionary
meeting at our Church where there was a missionary nurse speaking. It
was at that meeting, that I knew that I wanted to be a nurse when I
grew up. I kept that focus all through high school and scheduled my
academics to coincide with that goal. Unfortunately, that goal was not
to be easily achieved. In my Junior year of nursing school, I was told
by one of my instructors "You are not cut out to be a nurse and you
should consider some other field." To which I responded "What else is
there?" This bio and my life would have ended here had it not been for
a very supportive fiance and the Word of God. (See below)
I did drop out of college at that point and spent the summer in
Africa with a group of college kids in a program known as YES CORE.
The main emphasis of this group was evangelism at a secondary school in
Zambia. When people would ask me if I would be doing any nursing
there, I would answer "No, it will be strictly evangelism." God
however had different plans for me. When we touched down in Lusaka, we
were told that there was a nurse in Zimba, Zambia that would like one
of us to spend the summer with her. I was more than happy to oblige.
It was during that 4-5 weeks that my determination to be a nurse was
renewed and I returned to college that fall and obtained my Bachelors
degree in nursing two years later. I married my husband two weeks
after graduation. (We had gotten engaged two weeks before I left for
Africa and had seen each other maybe once a month for the next two
years---Bummer!).
(Now it its time to get on my soap box.) I will tell anyone
that asks, and even some who don't, that you should never give up on
your dreams. If you know in your heart that what you want to do is
right for you, do NOT let anyone tell you that you can't do it.
(within reason of course <G> I would probably try to steer you away
from a career as a neuro surgeon if you are blind <BG>) (Climbing back
down off my soap box and bowing)
My next goal in life was to become a flight nurse with the USAF
but again fate had other plans for me. The day that I was to meet with
a recruiter, I found out that I was carrying my first child. Now I
don't know about you, but I think that pregnancy and boot camp are
mutually exclusive. Therefore, I put aside my aspirations and went
about the business of raising my family. This is where my Deryni
fascination came in. After my oldest daughter was born, Craig and I
started reading a lot of different Fantasy series. While looking for
some good books to read, we stumbled across the first Kelson series.
We ended up devouring all the books that were out at the time and
waited rather impatiently for the release of Quest for Saint Camber.
(The only book that I have in hardcover because I couldn't wait for it
to come out in paperback. My second hardcover will be KKB for the same
reason <G>) ---I had forgotten about the series until fall of 98 when
I saw LBP (Lurker by Proxy) reading a book by KK in the break room. He
was reading the Bastard Prince and the Deryni world was once again
alive for me. **Unfortunately I have been unable to lure my husband
back into that world** But we digress---
Four years ago, fate again stepped in and put me back on track
with my aspirations. I was unhappy in my job and was scanning a
nursing career catalog when I came across the add for the USAF Nurse
Corp. I called the number and the rest as they say is history. In Dec
1998, I received my "wings" and in Sept. of 99 I began doing what I
have been wanting to do since the summer of 1984. I am now stationed
at Ramstein Air Base Germany, flying all over the European theater in a
C9 Nightingale and currently learning the fine art of converting the
C141 Starlifter into an aircraft fit to be used for aerevac to the US
(Once again, don't ever let go of your dreams)
OK time to wake up now. I am almost finished. Gotta do some
other stuff of likes, dislikes, etc. I suppose.
More about me:
Occupation: Now you have probably figured that one out by now!
Family: As previously mentioned, I am happily married to a wonderful
man who has been my faithful supporter for these last 20+ years and has
encouraged me to "aim high" Together we have raised three beautiful
children, Joanne, age 14, Jason age 13 and Jennifer age 8 (No she wasnt
an oops, it just took us a little longer to plan for her.)
Likes: (that is a real "duh") Peeps and chocolates of course. And
don't forget "My Morgan"(of course Craig knows about him!) I like to
have fun and enjoy bringing a smile to other peoples faces.
Dislikes: People who try to dash other peoples hopes and dreams by
their negativism. Racism. Anything that causes anyone to suffer
needlessly! Mosquitos (this goes along with the previous dislike) and
cold weather! (although I have had to re-acclimate to the cold here in
Germany)
Future Goals: I would like to pursue a Master's degree in adult
education with emphasis on Critical Care Nursing. (Of course if the
rest of my life proceeds at the same pace as it has been, I will
probably be 80 before I reach that goal<G>)
Favorite Scripture Passage: Psalm 18:2-6,16-19
The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock,
in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation,
my stronghold. I call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I am
saved from my enemies. The cords of death entangled me; the torrents
of destruction overwhelmed me. The cords of the grave coiled around
me; the snares of death confronted me. In my distress I called to the
Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice;
my cry came before him, into his ears.
He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he
drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from
my foes, who were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of
my disaster, but the Lord was my support. He brought me out into a
spacious place; He rescued me because He delighted in me.
WOW! If God "delighted in me" what right do I have to despise
myself! This passage literally saved my life in 1980.

Born: yes
(oh, all right-- 1970, DC suburbs; grew up there, then went to college
in Delaware and worked in central Joisey for five years before moving
to the San Francisco area, when my SO had just finished grad school and
refused to move from. The midwinter job interviews in Joisey and
northern Illinois just didn't convince him somehow.)
Pets: none, alas; the SO is staunchly allergic to most forms of living
creatures, though not me so far. Past roster of pets have included
dogs, fish, rabbits, and the occasional step-cat (belonging to
housemate, not self).
Marital status: engaged to SO, but in the unfortunate position of
having considerably less interest in wedding plans than almost everyone
else we know, who have offered guest lists, wedding gowns, reception
food, and so on. We'll get around to it one of these days. We've
already contracted mortgage anyway, as shown in the background of some
of Eileen's pix.
Religion: Ex-Catholic with vaguely Unitarianesque neopagan leanings,
but not practicing anything. It's hard to get motivated about religion
after reading several different books with several different theses on
what religion is All About (seasonal regrowth, equinoctal precession,
Oedipal conflict, etc.).
Other misc stuff: I'm a research chemist, amateur knitter, and sometime
SW fanatic. My favorite tv shows are prolly _Iron Chef_ and _Celebrity
Deathmatch_. I watch a lot of anime, mostly rented from the excellent
Le Video store in SF, which carries almost every movie, show, and tv
series I can think of-- they still don't carry Liv Ullmann's film of
_Kristen Lavransdatter_, but they do have a tape of the BBC comedy
special _Doctor Who and the Fatal Death_ (starring Jonathan Pryce as
the Master, and Rowan Atkinson and Hugh Grant (among others) as the
Doctor). And I've pre-ordered about 5 copies of KKB from Amazon :)

Passions: Books (most especially Deryni books), weaving, study of

knitting - especially bead knitting, candle making, and cooking.
Next?

I forgot to add one thing that I think was asked for. I am a Baptist. Sorry
for the omission.
Filk is the folk music of the SF/F community. A Filker is one who
sings, plays or listens to it.
The verb "to filk" has two basic meanings: one is to set SF/F lyrics
to an existing song (a good example of that sort of filk, but
not from the community, is "Yoda" by Weird Al Yankovic, to the
tune of "Lola" by the Kinks). The other is to write, perform or
otherwise participate in a filksing.
There are Deryni filksongs; I only know one or two.
I have filked a number of songs myself; I regularly attend West
Coast filkcons and local filksings.
I am also a huckster for the tapes, CDs and songbooks put out in
the filk community (see website in sigfile).
Hope this helps...

Born: July 20, 1957 (Man first walked on the moon on my 12th birthday!,

Religious: Catholic at birth, Lutheran by confession. Am not regular church
attendee, but still keep up with church news etc.
Marriage Status: By the law, I am single, but I and my partner Kelly have
been together for 4 years and just wait the day we can legally be married.
Pets: Our 12 year old Toy poodle, Black Magic. A Canine version of "Driving

Hobbies: Cooking Classes, Reading (duh!), Travel, Anything Disney, Starfleet
and doing anything and everything on my Macintosh computer.
Bio: I was born in Westchester County, NY and quickly moved to RI where I
grew up and graduated from High School. I moved to Portland, Maine with the
family in 1977 and lived there until 1994. I was introduced by a mutual
friend to Kelly and the two of us communicated in email and by phone for
months, then After a trip to the south to see Kelly, to attend Dragon*Con
and some soul searching I decided it was time to a move. I gave notice at a
bank I had worked at for over 5 years, made numerous trips to the south
looking for work and a place to live, before accepting an offer to move to
Atlanta from an online friend. Moved 1100 miles from my family in September
94 and have never regretted one minute of that move!
Kelly and I dated for over a year before we finally got an apartment
together and then eventually bought a condo in downtown Atlanta (3 BLOCKS
from the Hyatt Hotel..site of Dragon*Con) He is a great and loving person,
we are very happy together and have had loads of fun sharing our passions
for anything Disney, playing on our twin iMacs, Star Trek, Fantasy and
Science Fiction writing.
I have been a Science Fiction and Fantasy fan for decades, ever since I can
remember. I have been involved with Star Trek fandom for over 20 years
which got me involved with attending conventions and meeting authors, actors
and the like. I have been on plenty of panels (including one with Peter
David (always a hoot!) and I have been on staff for conventions in the
Northeast, Midwest and here in the Southeast. I am on the Green Room Staff
for Dragon*Con here in Atlanta, and have been honored to have sat and talked
with guests and fans alike while on "duty".
I first was introduced to Katherine's books by a customer of mine shortly
after moving to Maine. He became a fast friend and we read every KK book we
could lay our hands on and shared many RPG's and other fun things together.
I have tried several times to get to Darkover, but have never had much luck,
so I have asked for KK to be a guest of Dragon*Con's for a long time, then
when it was announced she would be at the 2000 Con, I was quite pleased. I
am planning on arranging all my work hours around all the panels Katherine
does so as not to miss a one :)
These days, I read anything I can get by KK, Misty Lackey, and my newest
rage...JK Rowling (Harry Potter!)
There you have it, sorry if it was disjointed.

P.S. Melissa has somewhere a filk song about Valoret as sung to the tune
of Camelot.
"Valoret"
Loris (sings)
It's true! It's true! The Church has made it clear,
The Der'ni must be pursued through the years.
Statutes were made two centuries past at Ramos,
For controlling Deryni, the race infamous.
And made Camber no saint but a heretic,
in Valoret.
The Merasha will make them dread our prickers,
including those few we recruit as sniffers.
The Deryni may no longer join the Priesthood,
in Valoret.
Chorus of Monks: Valoret! Valoret!
Loris: Some people think we're too severe,
But in Valoret,
Monks: Valoret!
Loris: The Church needs must be feared!
No Deryni may hold a noble title,
Or keep his lands when human peers have none,
Indeed by God's good grace,
There's no less congenial place
For Deryni priests and monks or nuns
Than here in Valoret!
Gorony (Speaks) I almost wish more Deryni would try to get ordained,
Your
Excellency. It's so much fun when we catch a live one!
Loris: Oh yes, Gorony! And the chance to make an example of them by
burning
them!
(Sings)
Valoret!
Monks: Valoret!
Loris: The King protests our ancient laws,
but in Valoret,
Monks: Valoret!
Loris:We let no statute be unclawed!
No Deryni may teach another about magic,
Or else they court a death they view as tragic.
Indeed by God's good grace,
There's no less congenial place,
For Deryni, that hell-spawned race,
Loris and Monks: Than here in Valoret!
I've been listening to Camelot lately, wondering what to steal
next....<G>

Oh yeah I am also sort of but not quite happily single. I have no pets but I
could count my brother who stays until he eats all my food then he goes back to
our mother's house. There is also my sister who actually shares my apartment.
I think I will count her as my child. I cook, clean, and look after her so I
feel like her mother...or her owner.
I am also a born catholic-went methodist-now back to catholic.
Oh yeah and I like walks in the park, chocolate and peeps but not in that
order

How's about....."How to Handle a Human" as sung by Deryni everywhere.
You also did..."I wonder What the King" for Kelson IIRC. Or then there
could be "IT's June...it's June the marry=month of June"...geeze, guess
I'll go and put the movie in, eh? I've been obsessing on Richard Gere
over the weekend and may put in "First Knight" again instead, though.

Melissa, how could you? How could you filk Camelot? My favorite musical of
all time! How could you even suggest. . .you know what happened, of course. I
couldn't get it out of my head for hours and I ended up . . .well you will see.
The Simple Joys of Tyranny
(Sung to the tune "The Simple Joys of Maidenhood")
Oh, Michalines, you Michalines!
It's Imre here, remember me?
Oh, Michalines, you Michalines!
I'm going to punish you, you see.
You know how greedy and depraved I am;
You must admit I seldom give a damn.
But Michalines, you Michalines:
I will not tolerate you more;
You've got to stop this thing!
I won't let you replace me with
A monk who would be king!
Oh, Michalines, you've run away,
Eluded me and fled.
But I'll find you and I don't intend
To stop ‘til you're all dead!
Oh, Michalines, you Michalines!
Why have you gone on treason's path?
You, Alister, and Camber's kin:
Shan't I repay you with my wrath?
Where are the simple joys of tyranny?
Where are all those subjected to my whim?
Where's the friend who gave me his trust?
I killed him with a single thrust.
Oh, why are the tyrant's joys so slim?
Shan't I lead the normal life a tyrant leads?
Shall I not know the pleasure malice feeds?
Shall my council not yield to me
And let my sister sleep with me?
Oh, where are the simple joys a tyrant needs?
Shall I not sit on old Gwynedd's throne,
Worshiped as an earthly god,
Not be catered to, but overthrown,
Like a little sod?
Where are the simple joys of tyranny?
Are those pure, painful pleasures gone for me?
Shall a war not be made for me?
Shall knights not kill these priests for me?
Oh, where are the wicked joys,
Dreadful, malicious joys,
Where are the simple joys of tyranny?
Linda
An idler killing time by study
How to handle a Human....I like it and I'll get back to you on that one
shortly. I can't remember where I put Kelson's version of "I wonder
what the King is doing tonight?" I hope I've still got it...

Bio stuff:
born in the early 21st century, Donald invented the time machine in 2037 and
traveled back in time to the late 20th century to gauge the mood of KK fans
in what history has subsequently known as those dark times between 'The
Bastard Prince' and 'King Kelson's Bride' His main mission was procure a
pristine copy of Codex, get it double signed and prepare it for auction in
the year 2053. A secondary aspect of the mission was to provide hope and
succour to the hordes of KK fans awaiting the next deryni production. He is
the proud owner of the first 16 deryni trilogies including KK's quite rare
'The madness of queen meraude' blah blash blabble ... he holds the world
record for most number of jobs (3,167 so far) a career which has included
jobs as a carpet weaver, pot plant holder maker, the guy who puts the

automobile powered entirely by peeps, Donald intends to run for world
president in the upcoming 2056 election on a platform of a peep in every

some bizarre reason not many people believe all the things he says about

As a VPP (Very Private Person) I've been trying to work up enough courage to
bare at least part of my soul to my fellow Deryni fans.
Name: Beverly Allen. Single woman, 57 years old this coming March 21. No
kids, but the proud possessor of psycho1 mother, 2 sisters, 1 brother, 4
nieces. 1 nephew, 2 grandnieces (so far) 1 grandnephew (so far) 2 therapists
(= 1 psychiatrist + 1 social worker).
and 4 stuffed bears named Simplissimus Quintessential Bear: personification
of stuffed-bearhood Nectar D'Ambrose: eccentric, quasi-sophisticated gamine.
Pagliaccino Bruno: clown, afraid nobody will play with him. My alter ego.
Ursula Burdock: prickly personality. My other alter ego. and 1 stuffed
rabbit named Wester. (He's a Wester Bunny); 1 stuffed squirrel named
Rousseau; & 1 goofy dinosaur who hasn't told me his name.
Pets: only imaginary cats so far. I've read that "you don't choose a cat, a
cat chooses you." Afraid of getting a cat that doesn't choose me. :o{
Fond of other peoples' dogs. A dog's open display of affection is a
morale-booster, but I have enough problems caring for myself..
Religion: Unitarian-Universalist. Attracted to UU Paganism, but lack the
gut-level conviction. I don't want to "just go through the motions.".
Hobbies: Sleeping. Reading novels and comic books.. Writing poetry.
Attempting to set my poems to music of my own composition. (Have you ever
tried to play four-part harmony on a flute?) Posting to newsgroups.
My other favorite newsgroup: Marvel Comics Xbooks. To get what the X-men
movie and comic-books are about, think "Deryni persecution"; then substitute
"mutant" for "Deryni."
For those who consider comic books lowbrow, I quote author William Rotsler:
"Comic Books are the grand opera of the print media."

I forgot to mention that I discovered Deryni Rising in the public library
where I worked as a reference librarian. What made me a fan? KK didn't turn
Nigel into a Wicked Uncle. That's I was disappointed when she went and
turned Nigel's son into a Wicked Cousin.
I've translated the chorus of "Go tell It on the Mountain" into Latin for the
benefit of Gwyneddans who don't speak English.
I'm working on some ancient ballads (or do I mean epic poems?) about
Caeriesse. I've just discovered a new, ironic twist to its fate.
The only things I've taken from KK are place names, e.g. "Caeriesse" All my
characters are original except Nesta, whom I plan to delete. Question: If I
post any of this to the newsgroup, can I still make it my own original work
by substituting my own original names?

Agree. The short version is that it was a misprint in a zine article
about "SF/Fantasy folksinging". Think of it as the folk music OF
the SF, Fantasy, and allied communities.
To filk (v.): 1) to set SF/F lyrics to an existing tune, as in "Carolyn
filked 'Camelot' for her song 'Valoret'."
2) To write an original song about a theme of interest to SF/F fans,
such as but NOT limited to real space travel, fictional space, Star
Trek, Deryni, computers, cats, politics, vampires, dragons, or any
combination of the above and MUCH more besides (I do a song
by Steve Savitzky about a vampire computer).
Filk (n.): A song with the above themes
Filker (n.): One who participates in the above activities, either by
writing, performing, producing or listening to filk (purists prefer the
terms
"filksinger", "filkwriter" or "listener" as finer definitions of the
above. I'm not a purist; I do all three, and I am also a filk huckster.)
Hope this helps--

Marital Status: married

I started reading KK in the summer of 1979, having been introduced to them by

I also love to read Edith Pargeter/Ellis Peters, Maeve Binchey, Amy Tan, and
too many other books to mention. (I just finished Tuesdays with Morrie, a book
that I cannot recommend highly enough. It's wonderful) I used to be a big Anne

Good luck on your novel. I am looking forward to reading it.
One more thing, you know you have to get KK's permission to use the
Deryni universe, unless you already have it.

in a suburb, our cats were allowed to come and go at will (more or less). In
any of your experience, can a cat be happy in a small apartment? . The Bee

All my cats have been quite happy in any setting as long as their bowls
are kept full and they have some cat toys (although they do invent the
toys if you don't have them<G>) and some nice human to sit on if they
are so inclined (the cats, that is). The real question is how many
really breakable and precious things could stand to be tossed around
like a catnip mouse?

Okay, my turn. Guess I have to unzip about myself, hmm?
Name: Susan Werner (I was trying to hide behind my screenname and no last name
when I first came online, but my name and photo are now all over Deryni
Destination website, so it's no longer a secret).
Birthdate: Dec. 3, 1966 Birthday sis to Marion.
Religion: Methodist with Catholic leanings, although I haven't attended church
regularly in over a year.
(I went to Catholic H.S.)
Pets: Tropical fish. Allergies make cats and dogs a problem.
Bio: Born and raised in Chicago. B.S. in English/Secondary Education from
Northwestern. I started as a journalism major, but switched after my
internship and brief stint living alone in Michigan. (No fault of Michigan
<G.) NU promised that the internship would be "an experience that will change
your life." It was...I came back and changed my major. I don't think that's
quite what the university had in mind. Then again, I really didn't belong in
a profession that requires simple, brief writing...I was the Mistress of
Complications even then, though not yet christened as such. I was always
told I wrote news articles like term papers...which was sort of a backwards
insult since I was pretty good at term papers. <G>
I've taught mostly elementary school and have an MA in special ed./Learning
Disabilities. I currently teach special ed. self-contained grades 5-8 in a
Chicago Public School.
I love to read, write, play on the computer, shop, attend sports events
(figure skating and gymnastics) and watch those sports on TV, attend theatre,
travel, attend cons, swim, etc.
I'm part of the amazing team that created Deryni Destination website and
I'm learning to scan and design websites.
Susan, That sounds like it would be a terrific book. I do hope you will
sell it. I'm sure I would enjoy it

Thanks! When I manage to whittle it down to a reasonable length, I'll start
submitting it. Then I'll need some prayers that the right editor gets it and
buys it. <G>
But I don't want it to turn into a Jordanology, so I have to do some serious
revising.
Thanks!
Susan, just thought you might like to know that while perusing postings
(lurking really) over in Rec.arts.sf.composition, I linked to Lawrence
Watt-Evans' web page (The Misenchanted Page:
http://www.sff.net/people/LWE/) to sample the first chapter of his
latest novel and was surprised to learn about several of his WIP and
proposed sequels that will probably be 3-4 books in length. He
mentioned that big fat fantasy novels seem to be what the market wants
these days (and that he was happy to write them!).
So maybe you don't need to trim too much fat from yours. (I've got a
rather oversized tale that ends up as at least four books no matter
what I cut, so perhaps our time is now.) Good luck!
