As much as I admire DRK and enjoy his stories, does anyone else feel,
like me, that he's got a bit "wordy" of late? I'm thinking in particular
of Fear Nothing & Seize the Night. I know he's always been pretty hot on
descriptive prose, but I've just finished STN and it was almost "Umberto
Eco'esque" in parts.
I'm also not sure I like these novels which take place over only a day
or two.
Maybe I'm just being a Phillistine, and I would still put DRK near the
top of my fave authors, but I'd be more than chuffed if another
Strangers came along.
Views welcome.

Yes, FN and STN were "chatty," and not as chilling as stories such as Whispers
and The Bad Place. It seemed to be a whole new style for DK. It will be
interesting to see if his next work is written in a similiar way. However, I
did indeed enjoy both FN and STN. I felt like I was right there with them.
As for a story that takes place over only a day or two, he did this with
Intensity, and it worked quite well.
Anyway, got to get back to my reading. Finished Lightning last nite and just
started Cold Fire.

I agree wholeheartedly and so would MD, but I won't speak for him as he's
upset me at the moment. Well, alright. I'll speak for him too. Prepare to
get blasted by Snowman, but don't worry about it.

I got utterly sick to death of the endless metaphors and surfer lingo in
STN.

Fear Nothing and Seize the Night focuses on mysteries that needs to be dealt
with right away, can't really drag about you father's body being stolen or
missing kids when the trail is hot. Like Intensity, what would that be like
if it was spread out in a week, that would be quite slow and boring wouldn't
it? The thrilling elements in both the books were great, especially the fog
part(FN) and the hidy-hole part(STN). I was holding my breath when I read
them. I totally love his new style writing as well as his other styles.
As you can see, I'm a big fan of Dean's and even bigger fan of Fear Nothing
and Seize the Night, so I tend to preach the books to those that didn't
enjoy them. I hope I didn't offend anyone in anyway and I'll stop now
because Stoner must be foaming right now.

You make a good point, the subject matter could only really have been dealt with
in the timescale he used. I was not critisizing the treatment, DK remains a
class act; it was just a personal observation on my own preferences.
At the risk of inciting your wrath though, I still feel the action could have
been somewhat tighter without all the verbal gymnastics. IMHO of course :-)

Maybe it's just me, but I think that since they were SURFERS, they would
talk in the SURFER lingo... And since the lingo was limited almost
exclusively to dialogue, and the book was a first person narrative, there
wasn't all that much of it... Go figure...

Belive it or not...I've actually read FN now, and maybe
it gives me a change to take part in some of those
dicussions <applause>...which are quiet many in periodes :)

Hmm....Stranges....I actually don't know what to think
about this book??!! Bad/good?!

Well, I like the way Koontz does play with words, and
indeed he did it this time. It's in a different way as usual...not?
I think, I liked the written word very much. But then again....
I thought, the in-depth explanation of some words ( you're
calling it sufer lingo, I think) was just TO MUCH...
I got very annoyed by it.

I don't have a problem with the fact that the story takes place
over few days...not at all. I think, Koontz did a great job here,
but the story didn't really hook me, and then again..I finished it
in two days or so...

Monkeys are a very common subject in scientific experiments. Esp Rhesus
monkeys whch are very close to humans in behavior, physiology and mental
attitudes. Therefore they would be the obvious choice for genetic
experimentation.

Monkeys are generally accepted as a good species to do testing on in
relation to humans.
Plus, intelligent monkeys might actually cause our extinction. They
have opposable thumbs on their feet and some have prehensile tails to
use also. If they had equal intelligence's to humans we would find
ourselves in a difficult situation indeed!

yeah i wonder where he got that whole monkey business from, no pun
intended......i thought the book was very good, speaking of FN........i loved
the whole dog part of it all and how orson was always there with him........it
was just a great idea, how he dwells in the dark and lives in
shadows.......imagine not seeing light EVER......its just amazing thinking
about how one would have to live in that atmosphere.......i dont know if i
could personally, but that may be simply because i know what i would be missing
and that would just kill me.........but besides all that i liked the
book........koontz just gets me into everything, and its always more than all
the intensity of his books........its like i want to see how the characters are
all going to grow and what incredible odds they will face and how they are
going to overcome them (hopefully anyway). i think the reason the book may
seem to get boring or drag on at times is because the whole book is over the
course of only a few days, so he ends up filling a lot of space with lengthy
descriptions, because really thats all there is to talk about since the whole
novel took place in such a short time period........his vivid descriptions are
what make it a novel and not just a short story of some sort..............plus
it just brings you more into the moment......without all those detailed
accounts from snowman, im sure people wouldnt not have felt as close to him or
felt as much of how he must have been feeling.....even though they may not have
necissarily LIKED the book, im sure most people cant say that they didnt get
into the characters mind and shoes and feel for him at least a
smidgen.......and i could see how people could get annoyed with the whole
surfer lingo stuff, but that was just part of the whole storyline......i mean
its like reading shakespeare and not expecting to see that age-old Elizabethen
language........the book was simply written though and around surfers, so
naturally it would be filled with their everyday jargon..........and i agree,
the fog part of FN was awesome....as was most of the book.........anyhow, those
are just my opinions on the subject......have a nice day everyone, bye :)

Please believe me dear, I'm always laughing with you.:) It does give me an
added insight knowing that you're reading in Danish. I would love to read a
novel (except an SK novel) in another language. It would have to be in
Spanish and I would need a year to complete it.
Snowman is right. Read STN and Fear Nothing gets a lot better.

Short reply to a long post. Just like to tell you that there's an equally
cool part in STN. It happens in a hidy-hole in Dead Town. Very much like the
fog part but more intense. Another thing, I'd be cool if you include the
post you're replying to in your post, just to help those who gets lost
easily(I think I'm the only one).

Don't give in, my dear Bianca. Don't listen to him, don't walk towards the

I understand what you mean about FN and STN. I found them to be heavily
descriptive and I know that I had to concentrate quite hard on them in
order to absorb everything. With the older novels, I found that I could
read them at a faster rate.

Bianca's sexual exploits always give us something to grin about. Doesn't it?
