G'day. All.

I guess that this will be a bit of a surprise to a lot of you, as I cannot
remember when I last posted here and having gone through a couple of
computer changes and hard drive formats I cannot look back and find out. But
it's good to see that this newsgroup is still active as unlike a lot of
other fan-based groups that have fallen by the wayside you realised a long
time ago that you needed being fans of Dean Koontz as an excuse to get
together rather than a requirement (I could not possibly wade through all
the messages since I last subscribed to the group). Anyway, there are
some familiar names still here, so hello Linda, Pauline, Fred and others. I
am still alive, still single and looking for love in all the wrong places. I
guess that the main thing that has inspired this message is that I have just
retired and I recall saying in my early days here that when I did so I
wanted to rediscover my favourite authors (including Dean). So I have my
reading room set up (actually it's set up as a cinema, but my favourite
chair is in there, my books are within reach and I can put a MP3 disk with
my favourite musical selections in the DVD player instead of a movie) and
while I originally used horror authors like Dean as a means of staying awake
on night shift I know that when I am home I have a tendency to go to bed too
early and be awake in the wee small hours which will be the best time to go
on my voyage of rediscovery. I think that I have a bit of catching up to do
as well, as "False Memory" is still the last of Dean's books I read and I
know that there have been others since which I will go looking for over the
weekend and who knows? I may even be able to post some comments in future
and introduce a rare on-topic thread here.

Congratulations on your retirement. My husband retired at the first of this
year and we are having the best time ever!!! I would say avoid "The Taking"
at all costs. The Husband is good and The Good Guy is even better....read
lots and come back here and post lots. One of my most vivid memories of you
(besides your ballroom dancing) is of you eating a chicken with your bare
hands...somehow that's never escaped me. Welcome home Mr. President.

Hi Alan,

It's good to see you back. You may have retired from your job, but at least
you didn't retired from the DK group.

You will find that Koontz' style of writing has changed drastically from his
earlier books. Some good, some bad and some horrendous. It's all a matter
of reading taste and opinions.

Hi Linda

I did read to end of the replies to this thread and it looks like opinions
are varied as regards the books that have followed "False Memory" so I guess
the best option is to read them for myself as sometimes I can see things
that others miss, or have a differing opinion but that is what discussion is
all about. Might take a while as I have a couple from Wilbur Smith and
perhaps even Stephen King to catch up with as well. I would guess that Dean
is keeping us in suspense still with the Snowman series? As far as the
chickens, I still like to check them out at the local Woolworths if I happen
to be out and about when they are about to close (which is unlikely these
days) and so those who came late do not get the wrong idea if they had been
marked down I liked to pick one up, have the thighes and drumsticks for
supper (and yes, sometimes devoured the whole thing if I was hungry) and
make sandwiches from the rest over the next couple of days.

LOL!!! I guess that could have been taken out of context. I just finished
"Blaze" from King, well AKA King...it was entertaining. Snowman is still
stalled big-time...Odd Thomas seems to be getting most of Dean's attention
these days, to the chagrin of many, I liked the first and third...not so
much the second installment. Can't wait to hear what you think of them.
Glad to see you back.

Welcome back Allan - how is your hometown (it's Sydney isn't it) ? As you
can see, we are all still here, chatting about families, storms, fire,
floods and wind. There's been some fascinating stories about how close it's
all come to our American friends.

So, you've reached the mandatory age of 65 to retire or did you take an
early retirement? What did you do before you retired? I've got a few more
years before that reality occurs for me. John and I just bought the 'great
Australian dream' and will be moving in the next few weeks into our mortgage
(unlike so many others, we have bought a modest home within our means and if
one of us [God forbid] ever lost our job or life or were unable to
contribute financially, then we can still afford to pay the mortgage, car
and LIVE on the others income. A very rare case these days it seems).

My son has joined the Air Force Cadets and is LOVING it. He loves doing
drills and practices for half an hour each day at home. The discipline is
spreading to both school and home and we LOVE it too!!!

So that's us, the others will fill you in on them.

O and if you haven't read the Odd Thomas books or Life Expectancy, I'll say
now - EWWW SUGARY! If you haven't read The Husband - do so, it's a GREAT
return to the 'old' Dean Koontz!

Opinions have been polarised - either you really like or you really dislike
the OT and LE books, but you don't remain indifferent *smile*

Welcome back.

Good for Arthur for joining the Cadets, both my brother and I were involved
in Scouting (and Guiding for me), and they certainly had a major impact on
our lives. Rick (brother) especially, Dad died when he was 13 (I was 11)
and Rick got lots of good male role models from Scouting. He is still a
leader and has been for over 20 years,

I am happy for your home purchase, and like you we are always modest in our
expectations. That is the next step for us, to sell our Villa in Warriewood
and to buy a house on Northern Beaches. We don't need a McMansion (only two
of us), and we will start the process shortly.

ooooooo! I remember saying you were a Guide and Ranger - I was a Brownie,
girl Guide, Venturer and then, a Rover - finally becoming an actual Venturer
Leader in 1992 in Dromana. I was the only Venturer Leader to actually be
INVESTED as one, rather than coming up from Cubs or Scouts. Sadly I wasn't
allowed to continue on in my roll after the unit was disbanded and rolled
into Double RR Venturers in Rosebud - they had enough female leaders and
well... it wasn't actively encouraged by the husband of the times... *grin*
too much competition from him I think!

I think to have a home with a sea view would be just wonderful, but all of
those are at a premium now. Is Northern Beaches a suburb in Sydney? (I
really don't know much of Sydney except that Holsworthy is near
Liverpool...)

Will you sell first and then rent until you find or buy first and then hope
to sell where you are now?

Best of luck
Tamara

No renting,.

Northern Beaches is a region, not a suburb, from Manly to Palm Beach (Home

Hello, Tamara

Some things never change, and quite frankly if you did not chat about
everything and everything this group would probably not have survived but
have gone the same way of many others that no longer exist on Usenet. So
anyway, to continue on that theme and bring everyone up to date..my home
town is actually Newcastle. I was always hoping to retrire when I got to 60
but the company I work for introduced Voluntary Early Retirement so
naturally I stayed and applied, but was refused because of my value to them,
then two years down the track I was been given the option of continuing by
learning a new job which I was told would turn me into an invalid with a bad
back as the company wanted younger people trained in multi-tasking (by me in
the job I was doing) or declaring myself redundant. So I chose the latter
course and have become reduntant by stealth with the company not having to
pay me any sort of redunancy payout. Never mind, I have been sorting out my
own financial future for the last two years and am going to have a quite
comfortable life in future. My own dream was to buy a manufactured home
which did not require much maintenance in a Village somewhere like Port
Macquarie or Coffs Harbour, but after having holidays on those places I
found they did not have anything to offer that I did not have in Newcastle
so bought my place here over ten years ago which I now own and while I will
always have to pay a site fee it's quite modest and as others who have lived
through the dream you described is a nice way to live out those twilight
years (which I'm sure are a long way away for you).

Heya Allan,

Yep, a good 25 years away before retirement age for both of us. It's going
to be so nice paying money on OUR OWN home, rather than someone's
investment.

My inlaws have a great caravan which they take on regular trips all over
Australia. This Friday they leave for Darwin to then catch the Ghan home -
they aren't taking the caravan this time, instead taking a tent because they
can put the 4WD on the train on the return trip. It's a lovely 60th b'day
present to each other.

I've only owned a caravan which was used as my cubby house as a kid *lol* It
certainly didn't travel anywhere!

I've known quite a few people who have relocatables in caravan parks down in
Ocean Grove where I grew up and they lived in them year round, like you,
only paying site fees and the electricity they use at a vastly cheaper rate
than I pay! Of course, tenancy in places like this is not as cut and dried
as those in actual homes/flats. I'm glad you are able to live in comfort.

My father took a voluntary redundancy at age 50 (he's 64 now) and wishes he
hadn't. Like you, his payout was somehow manipulated to not be the same as
it would have been if he'd actually retired. Unlike you, he is a drunk and
therefore he wasted his money and now lives on the grace of the government.

Does your home move or is it fixed? Sounds just lovely. You'd have regular
neighbors and then lots of holiday makers as well. Life would certainly not
be dull!

Tamara

There are some good meds now available that at least lessen the symptoms,
even if they don't effect a complete cure, so don't suffer needlessly -
get along to your GP and get a prescription.

Thanks Pete

I do have all the 'right' medications, and have done lots and lots of
therapy over the last 10 or so years, but it always gets through sometimes.

The hugs help lots as does the support of my friends (here and elsewhere)
just listening.

I think I could write a book of my experiences, but everyones journey is
different, I can't write and compared to some people my life is pretty good.

I've tried all the drugs, they don't work for me (not just those ... my body
doesn't process drugs well. My body builds tolerances fast.). Doc says
therapy, but I can't afford that no can I get a regular ride.

Yup, Anne got hit by post-natal depression after the birth of our second
child, and it just never went away. Does the meds, psychotherapy
sessions, etc., but some days nothing helps. Always worth bearing in
mind, though, that there *will* be better days, as well as worse ones.

> The hugs help lots as does the support of my friends (here and elsewhere)

Happy to be here for you. Nay, *privileged*.

I don't believe you when you say you can't write. Just look at your
contributions to this newsgroup. Each book is filled with chapters, each
chapter is filled with paragraphs, and each paragraph is filled with
words. It's just a matter off putting one word after another; one word at
a time. "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

"Everyone's journey is different" indeed, but what makes you assume that
yours is any less interesting than the next person's? WRITE THE BOOK!!!
And in terms of life-quality comparisons, I've read that if you have spare
change in your pocket, then you are among the top two percent of the
world's wealthiest people. Something worth thinking about.

Cheers,
Pete.

Psychotherapy is known as the "talking cure," but amongst professionals it
is somewhat better known as the "listening cure." In the castle, we're

Can you get cheap SSRIs or something? Have you tried anything like that
already? It might work.

(this is as far as I can go as I am being drowned out by a cacophany of
lawyers. But they're all imaginary anyway so... hey... mmmrpphh....)

Ok, ok. Do not do this without seeking the advice of a professional,

YMMV.

Seriously though, I've had experience with this. Don't let it get too

And mine allot less than others ... there's always someone worse. That
thought is what a) keeps me grounded and b) makes me feel like $#!+ for even
wishing for something better. I mean I can't hold a candle to millions in
Darfur, Those dying and children orphaned in Africa for example

Proud of my strength .... <sniff-sniff> .... I can't smell it. Is my BO
*that* bad ... ? <insert Fred comment here> 8-D

Uh Oh, here comes yet another bill! ;-)

It's sad that some members of the DK group have been dealt such crappy
life. I
only hope that either therapy or Medication or family and friends love and
support
shows them the light at the end of the tunnel.

I've never been really depressed by life. I've had low moments and been down
or
frustrated by life by never to the point where I needed therapy or
medication. So I
find it irritating that I can't solve or truly help people in depressed
states. Sometimes
I worry that I'm only aggravating their situation by making them more aware
of their
problems. It's such a personal thing to discuss.

My biggest thing is getting old and dealing with it's aches and pains.
Waking up in the
morning is a big plus

So if HUGS help you , here's a ton of them on your way. (Plus of few
prayers)
