I'm thinking that the Safehold series is turning out to have the
potential to turn into another major success for David Weber,
comparable to the Honor Harrington series.

I haven't been able easily to find through Google searches anything
about whether there's any special reason Tor is publishing these books
instead of Baen. Is this discussed here or on some web site?

The way I heard the story (and note, I am only an eavesdropping
third party) is pretty simple:

David was experiencing what I once heard him describe as a
'cash-flow' problem due to personal issues. The Safehold series was
one of those series ideas that David had pitched to Jim Baen way back
when he first started writing for him.

Baen's schedule was pretty much maxxed out at the time, so /Jim
Baen/ arranged the contacts that got this series put out by Tor.

I recall the panic when everyone thought David was jumping ship
when the deal was announced, but Tor & Baen have had a long & cozy
behind-the-scenes relationship due to how Baen was initially founded.

This is far more positive and amicable than I could have hoped to
hear.

Of course, as long as what he writes sells well, it will not continue
for so long that he will write more than they can afford to print.
