I almost hope they don't make a movie... i can just see them giving the
part of Druss to someone like The Rock!!! 8-|
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but has there ever been any
rumours of Gemmell books being made into films? There seems to be a bit of
a fantasy fiction film trend coming along now after the old lotr flicks!
The Rock actually wouldn't be a bad choice for the young Druss, since Druss
is supposed to have some Nadir blood in him. Toning down The Rock's bronze
skin would be very simple for today's make-up people. Some people disparage
Dwayne Johnson's acting ability, but I think he's improving just as Will
Smith did. I thought he was fairly decent in "The Rundown" and "Be Cool"
showed that he's been taking classes seriously and is widening his repetoire
(he was the best thing about that movie). He'd be able to do the boxing
scenes right off the bat because of his wrestling experience, and the
theatrical swordplay he's learned for "The Scorpion King" should have him
prepared to learn axe-wielding. The only problem would be making him look
old enough for "Legend".
If you are seriously going to talk about adapting a David Gemmell novel into
a feature film, then you have to start with "Legend", because none of his
other books could start a film franchise like "Legend" could (execpting,
maybe the John Shannow books, but I haven't read them so I can't comment on
them). If "Legend" put people in the seats, then I think there would be a
chance to continue the franchise with other books, because DG writes in a
very script friendly way. I have read hundreds of shitty scripts and
adaptations, but when I read "Legend" one of my first thoughts was how easy
it would be to adapt it into a GOOD script. DG's other novels are much like
it as well, in terms of how well they could be adapted, but "Legend" has all
the traits needed to start a successful franchise.
Here are some of the actors I'd talk to agents to fill DG characters with
(look them up on www.IMDB.com to match names with faces):
Rek: Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Johnny Knoxville, Karl Urban
Virae: Anna Paquin, Katie Sackhoff, Lacey Chabert, Rachel McAdams
Caessa: Charlize Theron, Rebecca Romijn, Kristanna Loken, Peta Wilson
Ulric: Vin Diesel,
Serbitar: Paul Walker, Ray Park,
Vintar: Antonia Banderas, Gregg Henry, Neal McDonough,
Bowman: Jason Statham, James Callis
Earl Delnar: Sean Connery, Patrick Stewart, Frank Langella, Patrick McGoohan
Gan Orrin: Richard Roxburgh, David Hewlett
Gan Hogun: Max Ryan, David Wenham,
Dun Elicas: Stuart Townsend, Jamie Bamber, Tahmoh Penikett
Cul Gilad: Ben Foster
Bregan: Shawn Ashmore
That's all I can think of for "Legend" for now. But I think Vin Diesel
would make a goof Tenaka too.

I have to admit I did not expect such detailed and extended comment on this
one.
Your expertise reflects your reading experience and knowledge of Gemmel's
world.

I dont think it would be so hard - but then the movie would be supposed to
have a high budget for digital FX. I dont think make up stylists can do
everything if the actor was 30-40 years old. And if I follow your words - in
Legend Druss was 60...

True. I agree about the visual aspect, but I think Druss had a deeper
voice...

That's also true.

If I should be honest with you, I already started rewriting Legend into a
movie script... I'm consulting it with some scriptwriter's coaches and hope
to finalize it soon. You wrote you had read hundreds of scripts - what's
your occupation?

I would fill Ulric's character with someone more "oriental", like Donnie Yen

both of them are too slim ;-) I would suggest John Candy... nah, just
kidding :-) but ... would do

I think Hogun should be act by someone more fierce and tough - like Ray
Winstone (but he would need to be made a bit younger though)

I guess both of them should be about 30 years old, Bregan maybe a bit
older... B.Foster and S.Ashmore are okay

also - I suppose Nadir to be like Mongols in the real world, so I would
choose some asian actor - Donnie Yen or Daoming Chen
The choice of actors could get very wide, but I would suggest to prefer less
known (but genuine) actors - like PJ did it in LOTR trilogy... I don't think
too famous celebrities would do any good in Legend, although readers
probably tend to imagine _them_ in character's roles...
Thanks for your comment & looking forward to continue...

who do you suggest should act Skilgannon, Uther , Culain Lach Feragh, Laitha

True! I can never seem to find an actor who meets my idea of what Druss
should look like, especially since he is as you say about 45-55ish?! in
Legend

I'm not really a fan of the rock so i can't really comment on his acting
ability... i suppose it's just my perception of him that he's a crap
actor! (i'd be happy to be proved wrong!)
Also he just doesn't look like how i'd imagined Druss to look, i suppose
that's just personal thing.

I do agree that Legend would be a great place to start, it's certainly how
i was introduced to Gemmell!
Making sure somebody doesn't make a mess of the film i suppose is another
issue!

first of all, let's make sure we understand that this is all very, very
hypothetical, because getting one of the studios to sign on to this would
take a mountain of persuasion. it would have to be someone very hungry like
New Line was. although Paramount, with their recent restructuring would be
a likely candidate to try to woo.
i'd strive for a $85-95 million budget, but expect closer to around $70
million. you mentioned using B or C-list actors and that would help costs.
but you need one or two solid B-list or someone verging on A-list to put
pople other than fantasy nuts in the seats. and a quality, no skimp
creative crew would be a must; Director, Cinematographer (Tom Sigel would be
my first choice), Production Design and UPM (Stewart Bethune, this is his
kind of picture) guys that are top shelf. that puts cast and "above the
line" crew at about $25 mil right of the bat. two good examples of money
spent wrong are "Soldier" and "Hart's War". "Hart's War" cost $70 mil...for
a flick that takes place in a dilapidated shed! "Soldier" as much as i dig
that flick, had some of the worst effects, and it cost $75 mil, so having
the right producers makes all the difference.
digital effects costs are coming down, thanks to Lucas and new competing
effects houses started up by ex-Skywalker Labs guys. but finely crafted
fireballs still cost $250,000 and you can't cut corners on this stuff or
you'll get another "Dungeons and Dragons" (although they were able to pull
that off for $35 million). the Dros would have to be mostly digital like in
LOTR, and that million man army of the Nadir and their seige weapons. plus
the battles and other effects heavy scenes and green and blue screen work.
i say another $20-30 mil there, but at least there are no monsters. other
sets and soundstage space at another $5 mil. already we are up to $60 mil,
and we haven't touched your basic production costs (C-47's can really bite
you're budget).
<snip>

you don't cast a blockbuster film role by deepness of voice. obviously, you
don't want Mickey Mouse, but you go with the actor that would most advance
the quality of the film. not that i'm arguing for Dwayne Johnson right now,
but the pitch of his voice wouldn't knock him out of contention for me by
any means.

lol, at the moment, floral supply technician and delivery driver. i work
for a local florist right now while i'm at school for a history degree. i
live in southern california and have worked in numerous uncredited film
industry jobs, and on about ten independent film crews as a lowly Production
Assistant, Boom Operator, Grip, Gaffer, Electrician, and Sound Mixer, but,
for which, i've recieved only one IMDB credit listing (and it was supposed
to be Director's Assistant, but i got typo screwed). i've got this job
because the owner's a friend's father and needed help over Valentines Day
and i stayed on until my transfer to UCLA next year. but i've had my own
office on the old Warner Bros. lot while in pre-production for two films i
was developing with friends but lost funding for. it's a tough industry,
lemme tell you. i haven't summoned up the will to produce anything but i
still get light jobs as a consultant (which means mostly defered paychecks
that never come through because the projects loose THEIR funding.)

Orlando Bloom, Warrior Princess? =o)
actually, not a bad choice, but a bit pricey for the size of the role.
Bloom's probably getting $5 mil per role nowadays.

wow, now there's a crusty veteran actor. that guy works! 43 jobs in the

Shane West, i think you mean. was his character supposed to be a grown-up
Tom Sawyer in "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"? forget that
question, i just looked him up and that's a yes. yup he'd do fine as well.

mention LOTR and you get the "wider audience" arguement. mention Harry
Potter and you get the "children's film" arguement (EVERY children's film
does well). IF "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" does well, then maybe
it will change perceptions, but don't hold your breath. a DG adaptation
will need a production company and major studio with serious balls for this
kind of risk.
of course, SOMEONE made "Thunderbirds","Alexander" and "Catwoman", right?

You're right, I can't cast a blockbuster role with a strong deep voice, but
I certainly could bury such a role with wrong chosen voice... Can you
imagine someone else's voice yelling "You shall not pass!" or "Bilbo
Baggins! Do not take me for some..." etc.?
I did not want to tell that Johnson's voice is not deep, it's just not deep
enough - but again, it's my personal opinion driven by my imagination while
reading.

Heh, he might appear kinda childish / girlish, but I definitely can imagine
him being albino. He is also skilled with blades from LOTR.

perfect man for this role...

Indeed, everyone has his personal imagination. I'm fighting with Sean
Connery's face (plus I have no idea why Luis Royo painted him with a
sword...), also maybe because DG did not specify Druss' appearance more in
detail...

Another, but very important. The producer/maker of the film should
communicate with DG community and for sure with David himself. BTW - is

Yes :-) Dunno the comix, but I loved both movies.

Jet Li with a black moustache :-) Why not?
Don Dragon Wilson would do as well, don't you agree?

Sure thing. But read Jer's comment about B- or even A-ranking actors. Good
thing you used the "few" word :-)

The only thing close to a comminuty i know of is this place, which has been
almost silent ever since i stumbled across it! There must be a DG
blog/discussion group somewhere though...

Must say i've never heard of him, but kickboxing champ type bloke, why not!
There must be loads of decent actors that would be suitable in all the
asian kung-fu type films, only a few of them actually seem to make it big
in the west.
I will admit I tend to picture Druss as rather too similar to Brian Blessed
for his own good.

Yes, too bad we don't know them more. But producers should - they would need
half a million Nadir with several key faces for the Legend (Nogusha,
Tsubodai, Nakrash, Ogasi, Chitan, etc... not mentioning Ulric of course)

Never heard of him, but I found his photo on the Internet and YES, he would
be perfect for younger Druss (let's say in Deathwalker or White Wolf)
PH
He was born in 1937, he's almost too old now. :-)
He's also famous for doing very jolly shouty roles. No matter what part he's
playing.
But then again, that would fit Druss quite nicely.
Oh, and he is also in the Guiness Book of Records as the oldest man ever to
