I really do wish hollywood would stop making shit movies and someone in
hollywood allow David Gemmell to make a film of 'Knights of Dark Renown'.
This book is the first book i read of gemmell and i consider it to be one
of his finest, i remember reading a chapter while sitting in a woodcabin
during a thunder storm, the part where one of the red knights traverses the
rope bridge fighting, that scene in my head has always stayed with me, its
truely cinematic. This book is full of great characters all with thier own
backgrounds and sub-stories, i think it would make a great film

and dont get me started on Legend!!! Druss the Axeman!!! What a great
hero, i always invisage Scott Glenn playing that role.

what do u reckon?

Ah, once again the ol' "casting suggestions" thread, so beloved of any writer's
newsgroup (Gemmell, Eddings, Feist...) resurfaces. God bless 'em.

First of all, throwing in my tuppence, the only films that any film company
should consider are:

1) Legend
2) Wolf In Shadow
3) Waylander

IMNSHO, the "big three" ;)

Not necessarily in that order, though I wanna see Wolf In Shadow made, if only
to see a western (essentially) with the Titanic...

As to Scott Glenn? He'd need to work some to get Druss' physique ;)

Now, Glenn as Waylander I could envisage...

What were you doing in a log cabin in the middle of a thunderstorm?

Just wondering....

Sounds like a stunningly wonderful place to be reading Gemmell, esp.
Rigante. Just imagine, you could strip off, wrap yourself in animal skins
and run around in the hills, playing as Connavar.

Oh yeah???!!! And what about Clint?! :)
Eastwood is Druss!
In 'Legend', he's such an "unforgiven" character.
I say we need some good ol' westerns actors.
It's always 'the magnificient one/two/three/four/five/six/seven (ad. lib.)'
revisited, don't you think?

I have always pictured Druss like Brian Blessed from Blackadder. But I think he has died
now. I think Druss should be played by some one with a bit of size to them but is about 50
or a little past it.

But if De Niro was taller he would make a great Druss. Maybe even Bruce Willis, or
Christopher Walken.

I always thought Clint would make a good Jon Shannow. Mind you that could be
the large number of western movies he's done.

Nope AFAIK he is still shouting happily at people.
Oh yes, He was in the Musical comedy version of Dickens' Hard times
in the Royal Theatre (I think) in Windsor a couple of months back.

The problem might be that Druss is HUGE. He's a mountain of a man,
barrel-chested etc. Sean Connery doesn't have the physique, and he never will
unless he works out for five years and starts eating anabolic steroids like
smarties. And we all know that's not good... ;)

I can't think of ANY actor with the necessary physique to play Druss, apart from
Arnie. And let's face it, even Arn would

a) Need to bulk up a bit more

and

b) Learn how to act ;)

As for SHANNOW, I'd go for Clint Eastwood or Rutger Hauer (sp?)

No clue about Waylander, mind. Now, my question would be (and brace yourselves
here) if a film of LEGEND *were* ever made - provided that DG had control of the
screenplay (and I'd gladly poke out both my eyes to see *that*... er....) who
would play:

1) REK
2) Mrs. REK (damn, I can't remember her name and my book is at work.) Virae?
3) The thirty (how 'bout THAT for a challenge then ;) )
4) Ulrik

Why the heck does Hollywood ignore LEGEND and give us historical tosh like
Braveheart? The world is a cruel, cruel place :(

Druss would be a really hard character to cast, I agree with Ali, it
needs to be somebody quite big around the waste, whenever i think of
Brian Blessed i just think of his role in Flash Gordon with those
silly wings, not the druss of my dreams!!!!

After jjust finishing the Jon Shannow books i can see where Clint
would fit in quite nicely, he's abit old now but if anyone has seen
Pale Rider they might agree with me, in fact thinking about Pale Rider
is uncannily close to Shannow in that he is a man of the cloth... mmm
coincedence????????

What about some of the bad guys? who could portray evil and depravity
with ease????

I'm confused again. Why big around the waste<sic>? I'd think you'd be looking
for somebody who's damn big around the shoulders and chest, not the waist. Brian
Blessed's certainly got the presence (and the waistline is certainly a plus,
given your criteria) but he's not got the shoulders for it. IMHO.

Hmmm... I felt sure that I'd read somewhere that somebody had bought the rights

Damn. If only Hollywood would do the right thing... and just give David

a) A contract giving him total creative control and
b) A blank cheque

Then we'd see some good movies ;)

I dont understand the sean Connery being Druss as he is smaller than I
imagine Druss, but he is barrel chested.

I still think David's work is reasonably niche.

Maybe so, but if a couple of years ago somebody had outlined the plot behind
Braveheart, I dare say many of the people who flocked to see it would have
described it as "niche" and not bothered (rightly so in that case ;) )

LEGEND would really "get over" (to use a pro-wrestling term) as a big scale
blockbuster epic battlestory (I've not seen a really good battle scene since EL
CID, for example.... and I really cried at the end of that one when ol' Cid rode
off strapped to his white horse, so I daresay Druss' funeral would get a similar
reaction) and the pseudo-historical would tie in nicely with the epic format of
Gladiator, say. Then tie that in with the scifi/fantasy mini-revival of Lord Of
The Rings, the Dungeons & Dragons movie, X-men, etc and I'd say you'd be
surprised how many people *would* go and see it.

It doesn't hurt it that it's got a fantastic amount of stuff going for it other
than the battle scenes, either. Honestly, Spielberg's mad for not picking it up.

IMHO.

too tough, but most could be unknowns.

he would have to be an aisan Guy, But I can't remember if He was a big man or just A great
leader, but he was not as old as Druss was he? So how about Cary-Hirioki Tagawa..

Because they would rather make crap like the upcoming D&D movie.

No idea :) I always picture her as a younger Geena Davis, (tall,
not skinny, heavy brow, deep set eyes.... YMMV, etc) but I can't
think of anyone in the right age group that would work.

>3) The thirty (how 'bout THAT for a challenge then ;) )

The challenge is finding more than 5 of them that are
named/described :)
I'd have to go with Jonathon's suggestion of a cast of unknowns
apart from Sean Connery as Vintar.
(If you're bored and have got a couple of hours to spare, try
casting Serbitar - it stumped me <g>)

>4) Ulrik

Stumped again.

On the subject of Druss - has anyone suggested Dolph Lundgren
yet? He's got the size (pity about the lack of talent)

Ulric - How about Jason Scott Lee ? Got the right appearance, and the right
sort of build, probably not actually old enough to really be Ulric at Dros
Delnoch, but would make a great younger version.

What we want is an actor who is over 50 and is huge - not necessarily fit,
but giving the impression of being huge and muscled.
Brian Blessed may fit the bill, there may be other actors who can. But how
many of them have enough experience to star?
Its funny how people seemt to think of Blackadder whenever Brian is
mentioned. I prefer to think of him in Flash Gordon, or Blake's 7 or more
recently in Star Wars episode 1.

Hollywood sometimes takes a good book and changes it too much in screenplay.
Try The Puppet Masters, and also Starship Troopers. Both good books by
Robert Heinlein and both changed massively by holywood.

Its rare for an author to get involved with screenplay. The people that
write them don't have to cater to the author, but do have to cater to the
sponsors.

I imagine Rek as a kind of young Richard E Grant lol.. I think Druss would be better played by an Unknown..

Knights of Dark Renown is a far better book though and would make a better movie as well.
