I am currently reading the book in english and talked so much about it to my
friend that he want's to read it too. As he doesn't read english books...
By the way, what about the two other parts of the trilogy? Have they been
translated too?

Yes, they have. Same publisher and same translator, I believe.

Na ja, wenn man mit 11 oder 12 Jahren ein gewisses Buch liest, davon total
angetan ist und nicht damit aufhören kan allen Leuten die Geschichte zu
erzählen, dann kommt es schon mal vor, dass jemand entnervt "Halt die
Schnuaze Bilbo!" antwortet...
So macht man sich einen Spitznamen.

I do, sometimes. In general I prefer to read books in their original languages

This conversation became sort of private and should have been taken out of
the NG...
Sorry for that!
But then, the thread started with a question about on of C. S. Lewis's books
which I read in english and needed to find out if a french translation
existed. On another level, Tolkien was a good friend of Lewis (as member of
the Inklings)...

The last time I appeared here (in the summer), I discussed with a lovely
lady called Anne certain Tolkienesque items (including the film). I also
said the tolkien ngs had calmed down a bit.
Since then the Tolkien ng wars have erupted again to such an extent that
even I (a stalwart) rarely go there.
May I politely suggest that a rare Tollers remark not be thrown off this
list, as aft etc is no place for a casual discussion at the mo. :-(
genuine enquirers need somewhere nice to raise the subject...

We've no problem with the nice Tolkien visitors! Sorry about those
wars over there. A shame, really. But on the brighter side, it's
nice to read such messages as below- we should celebrate and
appreciate this pluralistic group. There is much flack around about
what ever is the world coming to. We're celebrating Christmas with
folks born in the early years of this century, who will hold a little
folks born a few years ago. Gaslight to lasers- it's all Light. We,
the mid-century folks, think this a fabulous time to be alive. Our
parents are wonderful people who made a great world for us. And our
kids are better yet than all of us. They are comfortable with
pluralism, peace and prosperity as we never were. They are not
afraid- that is truly a miracle.
I've read many wonderful posts on this newsgroup this past year from
so-called Millennials. They are smarter, better educated, kinder than
I was at their age. That they have recognized and appreciated a
quality in the works of C. S. Lewis is amazing and thrilling to me.
And thanks for all the kind correspondence this past year. I'm
anticipating the discussions that will arise here in the next century.

Yep, it is!
I just finished "That Hideous Strength"...
By far one of the best books I ever read!
I came to Lewis (of whom I never heard before...) by two separate ways :
* the film Shadowlands left a deep impression with me and I wanted to read
some of the work of this somewhat strange person
* a book I read just then (U. Le Guenn's Eartsea saga) mentionned "(Earthsea
books) have been compared with J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and
C.S. Lewis's Narnia stories as being among the genres greatest creations."
Having read Tolkien and Le Guenn, I wanted to read Lewis.
As I couldn't find any Narnia-book in our (single) english bookshop in
Brussels, I took the only one present : The Cosmic Trilogy.
While reading the first two books of the Cosmic Trilogy, I experienced a
feeling I never had before :
Each time I had the time to read, I felt a strong reluctance to open the
book. But once I started reading it, I just couldn't stop.
The ideas proposed in the first two volumes were compelling, the style was
just about perfect, but still, I felt this reluctance each time I opened the
book.
This changed when I came to read the third (and alas last) part of the
trilogy.
(A small parenthesis for the Tolkien basher's in this group : Lewis mentions
Middle Earth, Numinor and the True West several times and goes as far as to
incorporate Tolkien's work into world's history!)
The basic idea that our objectiveness and our tendency to explain every
phenomenon in life as being "evil" and that the believe in fairy and/or
magic is "good" is simply a lesson in life.
As soon as "rational" man has layed down his belief in mystical powers (be
it god, magic or legenday beings), he lost his purity.
It is this search for the truth in nature (or sciences) that has lead us to
this world full of pollution, social injustice and lack of interest for you
neighbour's fate and suffering.
The more we advance in scientifical research, the more we are able to modify
nature. And each time we are able of doing so, there's no way to stop us.
This book has a major impact on my life :
Since reading it, the true atheist that I am is starting to wonder if such a
power as god should be considered a reality.
I'm not saying that I suddenly started believing in god, but I do say that
my confidence in the non-existence of such a being is somewhat shaken.
What to do next? Read some non-fiction books by C. S. Lewis I guess...

Amazing stuff, these books -- I ought to re-read them over the holidays. I am
looking forward to hear what you think of Lewis's non-fiction. Try _The Problem
of Pain_ for starters.
