I recently read that David Gresham "has become a practicing Jew and
spends his time studying the Talmud and promoting Jewish education"
If its true, I'm a bit stunned. He was raised C of E, wasn't he? He has
been a vocal proponent of Christianity when I've seen him (once a few
years ago on a tv interview in Kansas promoting a production of
ShadowLands, and then met him that night) and listened to him here on
the newsgroup. I know they aren't necessarily mutually exclusive, and,
yes, I do know the origins of our Faith, but it is a big life change for
him, isn't it?

Does anyone know if its true or not?
And if so, has he given reasons for this change?
(Lookit, before anybody turns on their flamenwerfer, I know we're not
his master, I'm just curious)

Joy Gresham had two sons....

Yes, ...and I don't see your point.
I re-read it and it is David they are talking about, not his brother
(whom I can't think of his name at the moment).
They could have gotten the wrong brother of course, in which case this
inquiry is pointless.

p.s. Wow, that got to Denmark and back fast! (that is what the .dk
means, right?) Only about fifteen or twenty minutes since I sent it off.

It was undoubtedly DOUGLAS Gresham you saw interviewed about
Shadowlands. (In the TV version of the play, there were two little
Greshams, but for the stage play and movie they simplified it to one,
and called him Douglas.)

I believe that David Gresham decided to embrace Judaism when he was
still a youth, shortly after his mother's death. I recall reading that
Lewis encouraged him in this (to the extent of trying to track down a
source of kosher food in Oxford).

Yes. David is the practicing jew. Douglas is the other one. The one
that has talked a lot about Lewis in this newsgroup and other places.

Yeah, well. An IP packet can make a roundtrip to the east coast and
back in 150 ms :-)

D'oh! Egg all over my face for not not remembering both their names and
assuming they were talking about the more famous one.
My apologies to all (and especially Douglas! if he's still around here.)

Douglas is a very busy man these days if you've been reading any book
news. That, and he hasn't been seen around these parts in a long
while for whatever reason I wouldn't care to speculate in public. Too
bad. This newsgroup has probably been responsible for more Lewis book
sales in the last six or so years, worldwide, than any other place.
We shouldn't feel slighted. Douglas isn't reading MereLewis either at
the moment.

His book "Lentenlands" is one of the best biographies i've
read. (even better than "Jack" by Sayers, perhaps beocs of his
first hand experience !)
