In light of his medical condition, I suspect Clarke spent
much of his adult life suffering from chronic pain. He
nonetheless succeeded in writing more books than he had
years in his long life. It seems Clarke's accusers
have more time and opportunity for such behavior than
Clarke ever did. Clarke wanted to be remembered most
as a writer. I think he will succeed.

What drives me crazy is that when a person becomes a well-known
celebrity, it's like they have a very large target drawn upon their backs.
They become the target of extortionists, kidnappers, scam-artists, con-men,
gold-diggers, liars and thieves. Although the tabloid papers allegations
were ultimately proven to be without any basis, and that Clarke was actually
the victim of an extortion attempt, it doesn't matter. The damage was done
and cannot be un-done. You are right D.W., Arthur Clarke will be remembered
not just as a writer, but as a great writer.
