I'm trying to get to the bottom of the 1X4X9 dimensions of the
monolith. What is the signifigance of these numbers. I've read that
Clarke chose them as the first three numbers from the quadratic series.
Is that the sequence where each number is a perfect square root?

In article <34EF8337...@earthlink.net>, jaymi...@earthlink.net says...

They're just the squares of the first three prime numbers, 1,2 & 3.

That's it
1X1=1
2X2=4
3X3=9

As to any greater significance than that I don't know.

To be or not to be that is the question.
I wish someone would give me the answer.

1-4-9 represent the squares of the first three positive whole numbers --
1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, etc.

IIRC, in the book it was mentioned something like "of course it didn't
stop at three dimensions".

In Clarke's original short, "The Sentinal", it was a tetrahedron, but
for the movie they thought that would remind people of an Egyptian
pyramid, and that a slab was more dramatic. (I think I read this in
"Lost Worlds of 2001".)

My guess is it defines simplicity and its capability to function (be the
root where all higher technology stems from) in any given
program/mission, however advanced or complex/complicated.

.... Doubt is fear. To be or not to be. The question is weather or not to know and believe in yourself, and be who you are without excuse, apology or doubt... or not.

Not really a question. More of a choice. The only real choice in which we have complete autonomy.

I mean to be. I've not been. I hope I have time.
