When I'm feeling down, I like to whistle. It makes the neighbor's dog run to
the end of his chain and gag himself.

I really doubt it was too important for Marius to keep the king and queen a
secret; he had an inflated sense of self-importance or just always thought
they were invalids and couldn't care for themselves. Akasha contradicted him
on countless occassions while she was in his care and afterward.
I think he asked permission for revenge b/c he didn't want to offend Maharet
or Mekare. Marius is a polite enough vampire, why shouldn't he ask. I don't
know what he expected them to say. Perhaps he and Thorne had some sort of a
deal.
Maharet isn't exactly in charge if you ask me, if Mekare had some objection
to what her sister said or did I'm sure we'd all hear about it.
As I recall no one knows for sure which of them holds the core, and the same
goes for what the core really is (the brain or the heart)....we're not
completely sure.
Thorne was only devoted to Maharet, not her twin so why should he give up
his tongue. Mekare and Maharet seem like fair enough leaders; not in it for
themselves. As far as I can tell, it's just not in either's nature to take
things for themselves.

I agree that it did not seem very consistant with the earlier stories
when Marius and Santino were civil to each other. However Santino
caused a rift between Marius and Amedeo (Armand) which could never
fully be restored, for even though they were reunited, Armand was
never the same. It would seem that Marius had buried his hatred of
Santino but when he told his story to Thorne, it brought that hatred
to the surface again. Also the previous vampire tales have implied
that Santino had absolutly no remorse for what he had done to Marious
and Armand, and that could be another reason for Marius' hatred of
him.

He asked because he respected Maharet for her age and wisdom. Sure
Lestat is constantly breaking their rules but it has always gotten him
into trouble one way or the other. Marius is wiser than Lestat and few
vampires are as impulsive as Lestat.

Maharet is in charge simply because she is the wisest. She is the only
vampire who has never slept, or gone mad, or forgotten who she was
(like Khayman did). Mekare may not be mindless but she certainly
doesen't have the wisdom and metal strength that Maharet has.
As for Thorne giving his eyes to Maharet, I think he did this because
he wanted the darkness of sleep. He could no longer slumber in the
artic cave, so he wanted to be bound and blind to give him a sense of
the peace he had when he slept.

If I remember the story correctly it is Mekare that is the core.
After Akasha's decapitation. Maharet handed Mekare both the heart and
the brain to consume feeling that it was Mekare who had the right to
consume both. I think after doing so Marharet is the one that
"presents" Mekare as The Queen of the Damned.
Take care,
