I am still reading the WH and I came to a part where Cortland Mayfair if
referred to as Antha's uncle. I thought they were (legally anyway) cousins.
Can someone please help clear this up for me?

Thanks!

May've been cousins legally, but Julian was both of their father's ,
plus Stella's father, who was Antha's mom. Ergo, Stella and Courtland
were brother and sister, making Courtland Antha's uncle. Jeez, that
Mayfair family tree must've been hell to draw!

I managed to get it down on the computer and it's still confusing as hell!
You know there's something wrong when one kid (lasher) ends up at the end of
about ten different family lines.

those three words pretty much sum up the answer to any mayfair family tree
questions.

Most aristocracy in the earlier times were incestuous. Many of the
Royals are still, to this day incestuous. They want to blue blood to
stay blue.

If memory serves me correctly, in the Witch Companion, by Katherine
Ramsland, there is a complete Mayfair family tree. You can also check
DejaNews archives. Several years ago the entire family tree was
discussed in detail, and I do believe many people here on abar posted
a version or two of the tree.

What ever happened to those people?

If any of the people to whom Victoria is refering here are out there, I would
appreciate it if you'd post a copy of the tree. I just started "The Witching
Hour" and I can already see that it would be extremely useful. Thanks.

Lexi, if you have a used bookstore nearby, they always usually have a
copy of Ramslands book. Many questions are asked and answered about
Rice's Mayfair Chronicles in Ramslands books. Also, find out how to
check DejaNews, it is all there in the archives. It was about 2-3
years ago in this newsgroup.

GENEALOGY OF THE
MAYFAIR WITCHES:
from the works of Anne Rice

charts compiled by Scott Trimble

created and uploaded to America Online: 19 Feb
1995
revisions to the title / description: 09 Feb
1996
"Lasher" and "Taltos" update: 02 Jun 1996
format changed and corrections made: 03 Jan
1999

The following chart shows the genealogy of the Mayfair
witches from Anne Rice's novels The Witching Hour,
Lasher, and Taltos. The ancestries of Rowan MAYFAIR and Mona
MAYFAIR are shown along with how they are
interconnected through the MAYFAIR lineages, the Donnelaith
Clan, and the Taltos blood.

All of the in-breeding of this family is quite fascinating.
By following the various ancestries, one can see, for
example, that Rowan was descended from Talamasca member
Petyr Van ABEL at least twenty-eight times --
probably more, since the book did not go into detail about
the ancestry of her paternal grandmother Suzette
MAYFAIR. The character Mona MAYFAIR herself figured out on
her computer that she was a twenty-fold
MAYFAIR. Imagine being descended from the same family 20+
times! The greatest number of duplicate
descents that I know of for myself within the last 400 years
is three -- one of them from Nathaniel DONHAM Jr.
(b. 1733 NJ) three times, and the other from George SUGGS
(b. 1665 VA) three times!

Of course, this in-breeding made the MAYFAIR witches related
in many, many ways. Rowan was the half-aunt,
half 2nd cousin twice removed, half 1st cousin once removed,
and countless other relations of Ellie MAYFAIR,
her own adoptive mother.

On the chart below: " | " means child of, " I " means
descended from, and the ( ) show that the same person
appears again elsewhere on the chart.

Contact me at st...@uclink4.berkeley.edu if you have any
questions or additions to the chart. Does anyone know
exactly how Mary Jane MAYFAIR, Ida Bell MAYFAIR, and Dolly
Jean MAYFAIR fit in?

Victoria,
Funny you should mention that. I just read this in my anthropology class! I
didn't know that it still continued though. Hmmmm...

Yes, it does. The Late Princess Diana was a twice removed relative to
Prince Charles when she married him. These are still loosely arranged
marriages and all must be approved. Kind of disgusting, no? And I
mean no disrespect to Princess Diana. I adored her and wept for her
demise.

You are very welcome. Now, can you imagine the type of great mind
which created this mash of people? All given certain persona's and
intensity, with full history? After I read The Witching Hour, my mind
was boggled. Truly.

I too was devastated when I hear of her death. I went to the British
Consulate in San Francisco to sign the condolence book. And it was amazing
to see the flowers and other things people had left her and the line I had to
stand in was so long. Amazing... Anyway, Queen Elizabeth and Prince
Philip are also 3rd cousins on one side and on the other, like 4th or 5th.
This really reminds me of the Mayfair family where the lines are so blurred.
Or so I think, I haven't finished the series yet nor the 1st book yet. Can't
wait though.

actually, there was a girl in one of my anthropology classes in college who was
in an arranged marriage, and she had no problem with it. it was "loosely
arranged", though. their parents introduced them and they approved and decided
to be married. she felt that since more arranged marriages work than marriages
out of love (and i do realize that it is largely because they have more of an
obligation to work things out), that it was perfectly fine. her parents and
grandparents were all arranged. i don't have a view for or against it. who am
i to say, right? i try not to be ethnocentric (that's a good word isn't it? :)
). anyway, just thought i'd throw that in.

bink.

ps. sorry if i just got a snip of the conversation, but i still find it to be
an interesting topic.

what do you mean incest? i was just commenting on arranged marriages. (i'm
actually reading the witching hour right now for the first time, and damn!!
cortland and julien are quite the horny bastards... anyhoo)
i did miss the original post so i may have come across wrong... although i'd
probably say the same thing about incest as i would about arranged marriage..
anyway i'm not making sense. bye. bink.
