100%? Forget it...

A strange thing happened to uTorrent today. I downloaded a 656 Mb file
yesterday and it was at 100% last night.
I even played some MP3's from the downloaded stuff and that went well.
Today I restarted the computer and uTorrent, and the same file had the
Error: files missing.
So I did a Force Re-check and after that it was at 76% to my surprise.
After I activated Start it has begun to download again and filling the huge
gaps that weren't there yesterday.
Anyone has an explanation?

First thing I would have done after seeing the error message would
have been to try to open all the files in whatever media player was
called for...maybe the files were okay and uTorrent messed up.
Otherwise it sounds like a hard disk problem. Run checkdisk.

No explanation but I can identify with your confusion.
I recently took a long time transferring a movie file of something over
8 GB. It consisted of a two-disk DVD rip. When it finally went to 100% I
tried to burn each disk. Disk-1 was fine but Disk-2 was corrupt and
wouldn't burn.
I re-ran the torrent, pointing at the original file save location and
after the recheck it showed just over 50%. I've just now got back to
100% after several more days of downloading. Haven't tried burning yet
but I expect that disk-2 will be there this time.
What is really weird is that, not only did it show 100% when it was in
fact only at 50+%, but that the half of the file corresponding to disk-1
seemed to be completely intact in itself (you'd expect any shortages to
be scattered through the total file).
Incidentally, Azureus (which I use) used to do the 'reporting 100%
incorrectly' thing regularly a few releases ago but was fixed (maybe 6
months ago) and I haven't had a problem since.

I found that, if you were selecting certain files from a torrent, (not all
of them) then Azureus used to drop off the blocks that were shared between
tracks, or episodes, if you stopped the torrent from seeding after you'd
downloaded it, but before you'd copied the files. You'd have to re-download
those shared blocks. It doesn't do it anymore. I don't know if that's what
you're referring to Sid or if that's what uTorrent is doing EDJO.

Now you've unsettled me :-). As far as I recall, I didn't select
specific files but elected to download the whole file (default).
However, it was a sl-o-o-o-w download and that was several weeks ago.
I'm aware my short-term memory is getting really bad and I was actually
only interested in checking out the movie itself (no "enhancements") so
it's possible that I elected to get just disk-1 at that. It certainly
acted that way didn't it? And reloading the torrent (without a specific
selection) would have then got me the other 50%
I really think you've put your finger on the more likely scenario.

As it turns out, this is rather a long movie and I think it (the main
feature) is actually split between the two disks anyway!

Well, i suspect it might have to do something with what you describe.
I did not select files to download from the main download, but did start
playing some mp3's while downloading.
Also I played some incomplete mp3's. But as far as I can remember, I did not
play files with big chunks missing, just nearly completed files.
Also I forgot to mention that I deleted the little demonoid-textfile too.
But if that would cause the download to fall back from 100% to 76%..?
It could be anything, even a drive-failure, like Sid wrote. I ran chkdsk,
nothing wrong.
After completed the download this morning, I copied all to another map, and
everything is complete now... ;-)
