Ron Brownstein notes that if President Obama does sign a health care
reform bill, "which appears more likely than not, Republicans will face
a momentous choice between consolidation and repudiation -- between
accepting the new program and seeking to dismantle it.
The alternative paths are neatly captured by the GOP's contrasting
reactions to the two central cords of America's existing social safety
net."
"After FDR got Social Security approved in 1935, Alf Landon, his
Republican challenger in 1936, denounced it... Roosevelt's landslide
victory over Landon (and subsequent re-elections) provided Social
Security the time to build impregnable support..."
"By contrast, Republicans largely accepted Medicare soon after
President Johnson signed it into law in 1965."

Gain back the Congressional majority and repeal it at the first

When liberals are around , obstruction to the freedom is the same
thing as progress
You have to realize that this has nothing to do with health care.
It is about taking your freedom from you. Once they get socialize
health care, they can control more of you life.
If all it was, was to insure the uninsured, there are simple ways of
doing that, and it would cost everyone less as well.
So, you're too clueless to read the .signature? Maybe you'll luck out on

It's not certain, but could be possible...in any event, I spent all but six
months of my first seven and a half years in the Lakeview Heights part of
Tulsa, which had a few Osages, Choctaws, and Cherokees in the neighborhood.
(We were last there two years ago, and Lakeview is going away...90+%
abandoned houses on my old street, and it would make the Fifth Ward look
like River Oaks by comparison, in only 52 years.)
I'm pretty much civil (excepting the occasional referee at an Aeros game).
If I hadn't been, I wouldn't be coming up on 45 years in this city, coming
in about six months.
SoZ:
Any factual reasons as why this has occured?
SoZ:
Are you referring to lacrosse?
Good question...the neighborhood we moved out to the week after Kennedy and
Khrushchev shut down the squabble over Soviet missiles in Cuba, a couple of
blocks east of Mingo Creek south of East 11th (the old US 66) had new houses
building, and it's aged well in the 44 years since we headed south. I
suspect that Crescent Heights had a bit better access to the rest of the
city, with I-44 and the future Mingo Valley Expressway (starting
construction), as opposed to Lakeview, which was on the west edge of Mohawk
Park and accessed only by Mohawk Boulevard. and East 41st Street North.
Even so, when the US 75 freeway was built between Lakeview and Mohawk Park
(and Lake Yahola), that reduced the access from the east, and there never
has been access from the north. The collapse of big oil (the summer of
1961, the six gas stations at the 36th Street North/Mohawk/North Lewis
Avenue triangle got into an insane gas war that had regular leaded gas going
for 5.9 a gallon for a week or so. Just my luck I wouldn't be old enough
to drive for another decade, and I could have filled the tank and gotten a
quarter and change back from a dollar. ;-)
Not quite...it's the modern version of the two pro hockey teams bearing that
name in town. (The original Aeros were in the WHA for its first six
seasons, 1972-73 through 1977-78, and had Gordie Howe and his two sons on
the roster from 1973-74 through 1976-77.) After the 1978 shutdown, there was
a season of the old CHL Apollos in 1980-81, and it was 1993 when a Houston
investor put up the money for an IHL franchise (to be housed at The Summit,
which was shut down when Toyota Center opened in 2003) and it was given the
Aeros name, with a slightly revised logo, and were taken into the AHL (the
NHL's developmental league; the Aeros are the Triple-A club of the NHL
Minnesota Wild) and are in their 16th season, with a home game tomorrow
night. Believe it or not, Texas has as many pro hockey teams as all of
Canada: we have one NHL, three AHL, and seven CHL teams; Canada has six
NHL, four AHL, and one ECHL. (Minnesota is the State of Hockey, but Texas
is The State of Pro Hockey, go figure.)
SoZ:
"It's not what you say but how you say it"
Gotcha.
SoZ:
Are you faulting the manner in which the road sytem was constructed for the
area's deterioration?
If nothing else, you learned a few bits you hadn't encountered before.
(in my .signature URL, you can see the eleven pro teams in Texas this
season...go to txhockey.html with this season's population.
No. The economy had a part in it, and the '90s weren't good to north Tulsa
(except for the Million Dollar Elm Tree Casino just across the county line
in Osage Nation). The neighborhoods between Lakeview and Osage County were
still in fair condition when we were there two years ago, but Lakeview is
still in a slightly out-of-way part of the city. (It could have been worse:
the old Tulsa airport was at North Yale and East Apache, but the terminal
got relocated to just east of where Memorial Drive would have been and a
couple of blocks south of the old East Apache that used to run straight to
Mingo Road in the late '50s. We weren't surprised by flights (mostly props,
in that age) over the neighborhood, but those days are long gone.)
There's big news for climate change students. A hacker has gotten into
the computers at Hadley CRU, Britain's largest climate research
institute and a proponent of global warming, and seems to have
uncovered evidence of substantial fraud in reporting the "evidence" on
global warming; the unlawful destruction of records to cover up this
fraud ,conspiracy, and deceit in the entire operation.
While hacking into the institute's records is inappropriate if not
illegal, the activities disclosed appear illegal and damaging to
science and the economies of the world.
At first many of us were inclined to dismiss the posted emails from
the Institute as fraud, but the head of the institute admits the
records were hacked and the emails seem genuine.

Dear Ray, Mike and Malcolm,
Once Tim's got a diagram here we'll send that either later today or
first thing tomorrow.
I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to
each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961
for Keith's to hide the decline. Mike's series got the annual land and
marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land N of 20N.
The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999 for NH
combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with data
through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.
Thanks for the comments, Ray.
Cheers
Phil

Hi all
Well I have my own article on where the heck is global warming ? We
are asking that here in Boulder where we have broken records the past
two days for the coldest days on record. We had 4 inches of snow. The
high the last 2 days was below 30F and the normal is 69F, and it
smashed the previous records for these days by 10F. The low was about
18F and also a record low, well below the previous record low.
This is January weather (see the Rockies baseball playoff game was
canceled on saturday and then played last night in below freezing
weather).
Trenberth, K. E., 2009: An imperative for climate change planning:
tracking Earth's global energy. Current Opinion in Environmental
Sustainability, 1, 19-27, doi:10.1016/j.cosust.2009.06.001. [1][PDF]

The fact is that we can't account for the lack of warming at the
moment and it is a travesty that we can't. The CERES data published in
the August BAMS 09 supplement on 2008 shows there should be even more
warming: but the data are surely wrong. Our observing system is
inadequate.***
Thomas Lifson adds:
One interesting hacked email childishly insults American Thinker, by
calling us "American Stinker."
It is distressing to read that American Stinker item. But Keith
does seem to have got himself into a mess. As I pointed out in
emails, Yamal is insignificant. And you say that (contrary to
what M&M say) Yamal is *not* used in MBH, etc. So these facts
alone are enough to shoot down M&M is a few sentences (which
surely is the only way to go - complex and wordy responses
will be counter productive).
But, more generally, (even if it *is* irrelevant) how does Keith
explain the McIntyre plot that compares Yamal-12 with Yamal-all? And
how does he explain the apparent "selection" of the less
well-replicated
chronology rather that the later (better replicated) chronology?
Of course, I don't know how often Yamal-12 has really been used in
recent, post-1995, work. I suspect from what you say it is much less
often that M&M say - but where did they get their information? I
presume they went thru papers to see if Yamal was cited, a pretty
foolproof method if
you ask me. Perhaps these things can be explained clearly and
concisely - but I am not
sure Keith is able to do this
as he is too close to the issue and probably quite pissed of.
And the issue of with-holding data is still a hot potato, one that
affects both you and Keith (and Mann). Yes, there are reasons - but
many *good* scientists appear to be unsympathetic to these. The
trouble here is that with-holding data looks like hiding something,
and hiding means (in some eyes) that it is bogus science that is
being hidden.
I think Keith needs to be very, very careful in how he handles this.
I'd be willing to check over anything he puts together.
Tom.
Update from Thomas Lifson: Charlie Martin has more at Pajamas,
including confirmation that "the CRU confirmed to the BBC that they
had indeed been hacked." But he exercises appropriate caution:
The problem is that the files and emails seem just too good to be
true. A number of files seem to be smoking guns -- revealing how to
resist Freedom of Information Act requests for their data (which would
both be scientific misconduct and actually illegal); long-term
marketing plans on how to push the climate-change agenda; and
discussions of how to pressure peer-reviewed journals to stop
accepting papers that disagree with the "accepted" view of global
warming.
In other words, just what the skeptics have been suggesting for years.
It seems just too neat, and we don't have independent verification of
where the files came from. Someone who is willing to hack might also
be willing to create fakes.
But then, the whole package is very large -- 63 megabytes -- and seems
to be very internally consistent. Several people have already
corroborated a number of the emails as being ones they wrote or
received. The package also includes substantial data and computer
programs, which are being explored as this is being written.
Climate Change: As scientists confirm the earth has not warmed at all
in the past decade, others wonder how this could be and what it means
for Copenhagen. Maybe Al Gore can Photoshop something before December.
Gore Photoshopped NASA imagery of the earth for the fold-out cover
photo of his new book, adding four hurricanes at once, including one
spinning in the wrong direction next to Florida and, in a physical
impossibility, one on the equator next to Peru.
Somewhere in the process, the island of Cuba was deleted.
