The Book your Church Doesn't Want you to Read is a haphazardly
compiled
anthology of various articles on religion. I can't really recommend it
as it
feels a bit disorganized and uneven. Try reading more focused books
that
delve on much narrower areas of study. The Internet Infidels
Discussion
Forums (www.iidb.org) has a recommended reading list in their Biblical
Criticism and History section.

Archarya S is a new-age loon with no real scholarly credentials. Her
book
The Christ Conspiracy is badly argued and has some questionable
factual
assertions and interpretations. It's in the same level as Freke and
Gandy's
Jesus Mysteries. You're better off reading Earl Doherty and Alvar
Ellegard
on the Jesus Myth, and Paula Fredriksen and Robert Funk (of the Jesus
Seminar) on the Historical Jesus.

Thank you. I never before went to that discussion forum before. It
looks
interesting.

Thanks for hints. I have read Mr. Doherty's book several times and a
number of his web articles including the one about the 200
'non-references' to an historical jesus. He is a very insightful
individual. I also read the Freke and Gandy book and agree
wholeheartedly with your assesment. I can recommend some good books
myself:
Deconstructing jesus; Robert M. Price
Randel McCraw Helms' books
The Mythmaker; Hyam Maccoby
Gnostic G.,Adam&Eve..,Origin Satan, etc. Elaine Pagels
The Gnostics Tobias Churton (good light read)
Mimesis&Intertextuality in Antiquity.. Edited by Dennis R. MacDonald

For a really great synopsis of the catholic-jewish interplay over the
centuries I can wholeheartedly recommend;
Constantines Sword by James Carroll (ex Pauline father)
However, how anyone could remain a catholic after penning this I don't
know!

Take care and thanks for the recommendations! I'm always looking
forward
to a good book.

I think the initial question was in reference to NON-fiction
books...not to
fantasy or myths. Otherwise, I agree, the bible would be a pretty
good book to
read.

Only one book worth reading and heeding - The Holy Koran.
Allah has spoken

Do you still find this assertion compelling David?

By the way, Ezekiel's prophecy against Tyre failed.

GRAY:
No, dimwit, YOU have spoken. Show that the Bible has anything
whatsoever to do with "God." HOw could it when it's such an
incompetent mess? Yeah, we know, the Bible says it is the word of
"God." So what? This post is the word of God. See? Very easy.
If it weren't for the political power held by Xtn doofusses,
the Bible would not be worth much time. It's just another silly book
of ignorant myths.

CHUCK

Nonsense. The bible is much too violent and obscene to read. It should
be banned for children and kept on the restricted shelves of
libraries.

But it's *how* you read it that counts:

"All that is necessary, as it seems to me, to convince any
reasonable person that the Bible is simply and purely of human
invention -- of barbarian invention -- is to read it. Read it as you
would any other book; think of it as you would of any other, get the
bandage of reverence from your eyes; drive from your heart the phantom
of fear; push from the throne of your brain the cowled form of
superstition -- then read the Holy bible, and you will be amazed that
you ever, for one moment, supposed a being of infinite wisdom,
goodness and purity to be the author of such ignorance and such
atrocity."

--Robert Ingersoll (from his essay 'The Gods')

Dear dlim,
I have met many people over the years that have offered me that
advice. Some were JWs and others just plain old fundamentalists. When
I
think about them I remember that after looking at thier lives I really
had no respect for them. They were so caught up in 'worshiping' thier
god that they had no time for the community around them; no time for
excercising thier minds in intellectual pursuits; and no time for
others
of dissimilar beliefs. They were, on the whole, without personality or
substance. In other words they lacked those attributes that make us
human. So, please don't give me any fiat like that again, OK?

> God has spoken.

No dlim, I don't think that it is god that has spoken. Perhaps some
priest of long ago or perhaps someone of today with a rather limited
ability to turn a phrase.
