General Description: The City College of New York Urban Scholars Program provides highly motivated students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in college and throughout life. The Summer Program is more than just an academic experience. It incorporates students? current interests along with future aspirations in order to cultivate intellectual thinkers who become successful contributors in tomorrows society.
In the US Program, participants are introduced to new ways of seeing and thinking about the world in which we live• often challenged in ways they never imagined. Our program offers individual and group experiences geared to stimulate interest in areas such as: Advertising and Marketing, Business and Management, Engineering and Science and Journalism, to prepare participants for further study at the college level. Students take real classes; learn from real faculty and walk away with something worthwhile.
Each class will meet Monday to Thursdays on the campus of the City College of New York, from June 30 to August 1, 2008 between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.
Coursework Overview
Advertising and Marketing Participants learn about advertising and public relations. Classes focus on the history, current trends, and future of media in America. This area of study will also offer students an opportunity to observe and explore the use of illustration, color, concept and ideas to learn the fundamentals of visual communication. Participants will learn about letter forms and page layout, the making of logos and other marks, and book or poster design.
The US Program is seeking Instructors for the following courses:
Marketing and Society This course introduces students to marketings role in society. Issues raised including the dilemmas of: creating objectives, incorporating research ideas, developing strategies, tactics and creating evaluation techniques for a product or company.
Introduction to Advertising This class provides an introduction to the advertising industry. Students examine campaigns from a marketing viewpoint and evaluate placement and effectiveness of the visual and written materials. They will learn how the use of public opinion, audience research, media relations and other investigative tools are incorporated into a final product. Students will develop and present a complete advertising pitch, as a final project for the class.
The Autopsy of an Ad Students will critique published materials from printed media and other promotional materials including both visual and audio. This course includes studying the elements of the message; the role of research in developing strategies; the creative process; and desired outcomes.
Advertising Design The computer will be introduced as a design tool, utilizing publishing software students will learn the basics for creating and producing graphic presentations and other forms of printed communications. Other Duties: . Develop an innovative and interactive instructional program that engage students using technology . Host industry field trips, lectures and workshops by career professionals . Provide academic advising to students as needed . Maintain attendance and evaluation records for assignments . Prepare weekly lesson plans and homework schedules . Prepare cumulative narrative and letter grade evaluation . Serve as a role model/mentor for program participants . Participate in all staff training and meetingsSalary:$40/hour for 30 hours Core Competencies/Qualifications: . Minimum of a bachelors degree, teaching experience, knowledge of subject, New York teaching credentials a plus; . Ability to develop innovative, flexible teaching methods and instructional programs to engage students; . Prior experience working in a teaching capacity in a secondary or post secondary setting; . Sense of humor most important; . Favor is given to Instructors who can teach more than one course. Position will remain open until filled.

Business and Management This course of study introduces students to the ins and outs of business operations. Students explore fundamental business principles and how they are applied in todays marketplace; how businesses are organized; the importance of communication, as well as the role of financial analysis in business.
The US Program is seeking Instructors for the following courses:
Introduction to Business, Money and Banking This class develops a broad understanding of business institutions, functions, practices and problems. Students will learn the nature and functions of money, the role of financial systems and institutions.
Introduction to Management This class teaches you the art and science of running an organization/business. It involves setting goals, planning, organizing and implementing plans to achieve desired objectives. This course encompasses all these facets as well as allows the student to have hands-on experience in managing their own company. They will create a prospective company and formulate strategies for its success by utilizing the knowledge gained throughout the course.
Writing for Business This course introduces students to the basics of creating and writing effective business letters, proposals and brief formal and informal reports. Students will also take part in individual and group oral presentations.
Stock Market Game In The Stock Market Game, students work together to create and manage virtual investment portfolios of real world stocks and mutual funds. Each team researches and evaluates companies in which to invest. Students must also learn to manage their investments by deciding whether to buy, sell, or hold the funds and stocks in the portfolio they have created. Other Duties: . Journalism These courses cover the many aspects of journalism from print to newsreels, television, and the Internet. Students learn through lectures and practical exercises, reporting, features, reviews, photojournalism, ethics, and commentary. This course of study is ideal for students who enjoy writing; who have a general interest in relaying events, and those who very expressive always interested in engaging an audience in thought and conversation.
The US Program is seeking Instructors for the following courses:
Mass Media and Society This course explains what the media is and how it impacts our everyday life. It explores the different forms in which the media is presented and its major players.
Writing and Editing for Journalists This class is an introduction to the fundamentals of working journalism. Students master English grammar, become versed in the Associated Press writing style and develop critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate the news.
Basic Video and Audio Production This course offers students, practical training in the fundamentals of broadcast communication. Students learn the basic techniques, including field production and editing.
Investigative Reporting Intensive introduction to the art of generating original news ideas about issues of public significance, developing critical news judgment, unearthing often difficult-to-access information, and organizing the information into focused, well-documented and compelling stories.
