Hello Beer lovers,

I was curious about dark beers, particularly black ones (not ales, or
Guinness-like beers, though I love them too). Where I live in Ontario
Canada, I can only get Sapporo Black. I like it, but want more. I was
wondering 1) does anyone else like black beers? 2) what are some good
brands (I especially love Kostritzer but never see it here) and 3) is it
possible to get them in Canada? I've tried at the local liquor stores
without luck, and I doubt they can be sent by post into Canada.

Thanks,
Brian

Sierra Nevada porter, St. Bridgit's robust porter, S. Smiths Oatmeal
stout, Black Mountain porter. To name a few.

a good black beer is Great Northern's Black Star Lager, from montana.
it's available widely in the west usa, dunno about canada. ken mentioned
Negra Modela, which i also like a lot...it's a lager, even though it
says ale on the bottle. drwho and groberts mentioned sierra nevada's
dark beers, which are really good, but they're ales.

let us know what you think

How could you mention Sierra Nevada porter and not mention Sierra Nevada stout?
Perhaps one of the best bottled stouts on the market. Also, Rogue Shakespeare
is excellent. Also Ipswich Oatmeal Stout (made in Massachusetts) is a very fine
dark beer.

Speaking of porters, one of my favorites is Otter Creek Stovepipe Porter - has
an extra smokey/burnt flavor to it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been trying to get Sierra Nevada's
products (any of them) for years without success. I've heard nothing but
good things about them. Great Northern might be a tough one to get, but I'll
watch for it.

Actually I tried and really like Negra Modela. I had it in Korea of all
places (at U.S. $2.75 a bottle) but couldn't find it back here in
Canada--go figure...

You are right, it is a fine beer.

Widmer currently has something called "Collaborator milk stout" that is
fabulous! I took the brewery tour just yesterday and discovered this
sweet treat. Collaborator refers to the collaboration project between
the Widmer brewery and some cabal of home brewers who first concocted
the recipe. I was told that profits go to charity.

Unfortunately, I have only seen it in the pub attached to the brewery in
Portland (929 N Russell, in the shadow of the I-405 bridge, 9 blocks
WEST of 1st St.)

See their website: <http://www.widmer.com/>

Life's too short to drink bad beer.

More to the point, right at the corner of Russell and N. Interstate Ave.
Not hard to find, really.

But I've seen Collaborator beers show up elsewhere in Puddletown,
especially places like Caswell's, the Rose and Raindrop, and the
Horse Brass, certainly three of PDX's best places for tap beer.
Wouldn't be surprised if the Dublin Pub or Higgins had such available,
too.

My wife and I both enjoy Red Hook Double Black Stout. According to the
label, it is brewed with Starbucks coffee. It is very dark and bitter,
needless to say. As stouts go, it does not have the smoothness of Guiness
or Sam Adams Cream. But it is certainly very good, and as black a brew as
you are likely to find anywhere.
