Hi guys,
the talk going on in this newsgroup reminds me a lot on
my stay in US, when I went to grad school in CT.
Anyway, we had lots of discussions about similar
(beer-) topics with people with various cultural
backgrounds. One thing I always tried to point out,
is the fact, that german import, just doens't taste
like if you would get the same bottle in Germany.
And I blieve it is the same with english beer.
This is due to preserving the stuff, before they
ship it over to u.s. which not only kills bacteria,
but also the taste.
As a consequence I used to go for american brands like
anchor steam, samual adams, elm city, which run
about as expensive as imports. Those beers I really
liked a lot. (Anybody knows if they are available in
Germany?)
The funny thing is I also used to order
english brands like newcastle ale or bass ale. As I
found out a couple month ago in UK, their original
taste is horribly sweet, so the "taste reduced"
american version matched my taste buds better.
I doubt it anyhow, that it is necessary to preserve
beer (or wine). Out of experience I can tell, that
my privately imported booth, which was rationed
strictly and lasted for months, had never turned
bad.
So far, any comments wellcome,
cheers & prost
Rudi
