I'm not an experienced Scotch Whiskey connoiseur/drinker.
I have tried a few single malt Scotch Whiskeys,
and decided it was a tasteful drink.
To the more experienced Scotch Whiskey drinkers:
What are some of the better Speyside single malt
Scotch Whiskeys ?
Which one(s) is/are considered the best?
Many Thanks,
eg "not a scotch (or single malt) connoisseur" price.
P.S.: I'm more of a beer and wine drinker.

Hmmn. I'm not a huge speyside fan but I'll give it a go.
Craggenmore is one that I know a lot of people find to be a great speyside
malt. All of the malt guides I own rate it highly. Personally, I've never
been
able to find anything distinctive about it.
Macallan is an often mentioned speyside. It falls into the sherried speyside
category. It's a *great* malt, especially the 18yo (around $80 US, ~$30 for
the 12,
~$50 for the 15) but again I'm not a huge fan of sherried malts. If I want
to taste
some sherry tones I'll go for Lagavulin or Highland Park.
I just picked up a bottle of Aberlour A'bundah which has recently become
available in the US (price should be $50 - $55). Again, heavily sherried
(oloroso).
I would recommend it. Heavy sherry on the nose. Quite complex palette,
fruity
with distinctive sweet (honey?) tones. Worth an experiment IMHO.
Glenlivet at 18yo (~$50) is well worth trying. Much superior to the 12yo
IMHO.
I've tried the following in bars and have enjoyed them but have no tasting
notes:
Glen Grant
Glen Rothes
Balvenie (easy to find, would recommend you avoid the finished versions
[port etc] initially)
Linkwood (emptied several bottles, recommended) and Glen Rothes are going
to be harder to find. There are probably 20 other good speysides. All
depends on
whose defn. of "connoisseur" pricing you are following :-) Thats $100+ for
me, but
if it's over $50 for you, it's going to be pretty restrictive.
I'd be interested to hear experiences from other "spey-heads" out there.

BEFORE you go running off straight to Islay, which is where most of our
jaded palates wind up eventually, it is a very nice idea to try lots of
Speysides. The previous recommendations are really good. For me, I tried
lots of Speysides over many years, and found many of them very, very tasty.
It's incredible--actually practically miraculous--how each distillery does
produce whiskeys with unique, inimitable flavors. My personal priority list
would probably look like this, arranged by echelon from finest to least of
whiskeys I've had full bottles of (others will have different opinions, I
can assure you):
A) Macallan
B) Mortlach, Dallas Dhu, Glenfarclas
C) Longmorn, Speyburn, Balvenie, Linkwoood, Aberlour
D) Miltonduff, Glen Elgin, Glen Grant, Glendullan, Dufftown, The Glenlivet,
Strathisla
E) Glen Moray, Aultmore, Glenfiddich
F) Tamnavulin, Auchriosk, Knockando, Glen Deveron, Glen Garioch, Tomatin
If you travel just an hour or so from the Speyside region, you might also
want to head for Glenmorangie and Clynelish. Dalwhinnie, Glenury Royal, and
Lochanagar also have distinctive flavor.
Macallan 18 is to die for, the 25, to kill for.

Well then there's hope for you yet. Perhaps you won't also be a Scotch
Whisky poseur. Since my reply will be cross-posted to all of the ng's you
did, why did you do this? Is there a lot of discussion of scotch whiskies
at alt.beer or alt.drunken.bastards?

Would you care to share your experiences and tell us what it was about each
that made you conclude they were "tasteful"?

These are *very* subjective questions. Perhaps it's best if you give us more
information on why you are seeking out Speyside whiskies? Did you try some?
Did someone tell you you should?
> eg "not a scotch (or single malt) connoisseur" price.
What are your limits here?
> P.S.: I'm more of a beer and wine drinker.
O.K. Is this relevant? I like Canadian Whisky. Am I disqualified?

Are you a SPY for the Speyside (aptly named phoneticly speaking)
single malt Scotch Whiskey?
Would you be willing to be subjected to a lie detector test?
And most importantly, do you blow your nose while in the shower without
the aid of a tissue?

Beats me why egp posted to alt.drunken.bastards (really, egp, why
didja?), but we do talk whisky/whiskey here on alt.beer or on rfdb
fairly often. Outside of beer (and personalities) it's probably the most
popular topic.
