Sam Adams Triple Bock is %17 alcohol, and is now considered
the strongest beer in the world. I believe Samichlaus is also
somewhere around the %13 mark, although I'm not to sure. Sierra
Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine is also %11 alcohol. Those are the
strongest beers I know of.

it is called samiclaus, and it is 14%. it is brewed on dec 6 when the batch
from
the year before is released. It starts off tasting kind of like port
wine/beer and ends with a kick like brandy or cognac. It's definitely
alcoholic. and not something you drink a six pack of.
Also, it is Swiss, not Swedish. And it is not the strongest beer in the
world. Read the FAQs around here if you want to find out which one is.

Strongest Beer:
(Note: These categories will be split into
Conventionally Brewed and Ice Distilled only when an ice
distilled beer is stronger than the strongest
conventionally brewed beer.)
Strongest Ale or Barley Wine:
The Boston Beer Company (marketers of the Samuel Adams line of
beers) is marketing a 17.5% abv (14.4% abw) "Triple Bock" beer.
Despite its name, it is a barley wine, brewed with Champagne yeast
and not lager yeast. There is some speculation that this is the
beer that was test marketed in the U.K. as "Small Brewer's Revenge"
Notables from the recent past:
Uncle Igor's Famous Falling over Water, brewed by the Ross Brewery,
in Bristol, UK, which is 17.3% abv (14.2% abw). <Supplied by Conor
O'Neill -- co...@inmos.co.uk>
Roger & Out, brewed at the Frog & Parrot in Sheffield, Great
Britain, from a recipe devised by W. R. Nowill and G. B. Spencer,
is 16.9% abv (13.9% abw), was the previous record-holder (GBR,
1992). (I received a communication that contended that 16.9% abv
was a theoretical limit and that it only reached this strength
once.)
Lagers:
Samichlaus Dark 1987 (Brauerei Huerlimann, Zurich, Switzerland) is
the strongest conventionally brewed lager at 14.93% abv (12.23%
abw). (GBR, 1992) Michael Jackson's Pocket Guide (1994) indicates
this has been as high as 16% (13.1% abw).
Michael Jackson refers to EKU Kulminator 28 as having the highest
gravity (28 degrees guaranteed, but some have been as high as 30.54
degrees). The alcohol content is 13.5% abv (11.0% abw). This beer
is ice distilled, but not for the purpose of increasing its
alcoholic strength. (MJPG94)

Obviously, Sage in the beer store was confusing Sweden with
Switzerland. The "big holiday" is St. Nicklaus day. It is still the
world's stongest lager.

Here we go again I suggest you both take a look at the FAQ. Whilst on the
subject I received the regular mailing from Macro (Wholesale Cash & Carry)
yesterday. They are claiming the EKU 20 at 11% ABV is the strongest beer in
the world. I think I'll send them a fax to point out they are in contravention
of the trades description act :-).

Samichlaus is still the world champion strongest lager beer, rangin
between just under 13 to over 14% ABV. The Sam Adams Triple Bock is up
around 17%, but a top-fermenting yeast is used in it. I cannot drink more
that 1 bottle at a time of any of those beers!

Second, you are probably thinking of EKU. It is only the second
strongest *lager* on record, and it is only 13.5%. The following is

La biere du diable is a swiss beer at 12% They to claim it to be the
strongest blond beer in the world. I must say it tastes like gin because
it is so strong! 8-)
I think there is La biere du demon in France which is also 12%

is about 20 percent alcohol. It is brewed at a pub somewhere,
and they only let you drink one a night because it is so strong.
Could somebody please look this up for me? I'm pretty sure it is in
there. I need to buy a new edition of this handy little book because
the one I lost was out-of-date on American micros and brewpubs.

1. Yes Belgium is still brewing Trappisten biers.
2. EKU (Echstes Krumbacher Union) do brew a whole range of beers and
they are German (from believe it or not, Krumbach.).
