Thanks to the many subscribers who've signed up since the last issue.
We now send this newsletter out to more than 100 people in 9 countries
(though this does include Antarctica, which may lead us to believe that
some people are making things up... not a big deal either way. If you
are getting this in Antarctica, thanks!)
We've updated the site to April 13, 1999 and have lots of new items to
take a look at. We've also started a new links section on the site -
we'll cover/review one beer related site per issue in this newsletter.
As usual, any feedback on our reviews, news, events and other assorted
ramblings can be sent to mailto:be...@canbeer.com.
INTRODUCTION
----------------------------------------------------------------
This week we've got a number of news brews including our first from the
Big 2. The Big 2 is what we like to call the brewing empires of Labatt
and Molson. Together they still produce 80-90% of the beer drank in
Canada, meaning that it is a bit tough to ignore them.
Pam Taylor our enigmatic PR person admits in a "confession" that she
really doesn't like beer and prefers to drink other things. Let us know
if you'd like to see reviews of her prefered style of beverages.
NOTE: Both Brad and Todd will be attending Brewtopia in Calgary this
weekend. We'll be touring and tasting and getting in everyone's way.
Todd will also be giving a couple of talks about "What to look for when
tasting beer" on the Saturday at 4 and 8 PM. Come along and see if he
knows what he's talking about. This event also helps sponsor Calgary's
Alberta Theatre Projects. So show up and drink for the arts!
Brewtopia:
Thursday April 15 and Friday April 16, 4-10 pm
Saturday April 17 2-10 pm
The Red & White Club
(Adjacent to McMahon Stadium, 1833 Crowchild Trail NW)
For more information call Alberta Theatre Projects at 294-7402
And just because we're not there doesn't mean you shouldn't go. The
Okanagan Fest-of-Ale is on this weekend as well. For more information call
- (800) 633-1900.
And last but not least, we've be recently criticized for not presenting
enough hard nosed reviews. We seem to be overly nice to all the beers
that we review, meaning that some of you don't believe us. We'll try to
bring a more kick-ass edge to some of our reviews to pacify those of you
who are more combatitive. It'll be hard though since, instinctively, we
avoid the less interesting beer out there.
Keep the feedback coming.
REVIEWS - Beer
----------------------------------------------------------------
This batch presents a wide variety of beer, 7 in total.
Sleeman - Cream Ale
Review: Todd Kuipers
http://www.canbeer.com/beer/sleeman-cream-todd.html
Great to drink, this beer sustained more than one party for me whilst
spending time in southern Ontario.
Bowen Island - Special Bitter
Review: Brad Arnst
http://www.canbeer.com/beer/bowenisland-specialbitter-brad.html
Citrus fruit notes throughout, especially grapefruit.
Molson - Molson Dry
Review: Todd Kuipers
http://www.canbeer.com/beer/molson-dry-todd.html
... Molson can, and does, produce more interesting beer.
Bear Brewery - Brown Bear
Review: Todd Kuipers
http://www.canbeer.com/beer/bear-brown-todd.html
The light carbonation and slight spicy notes make this an interesting if
not enjoyable brew to drink.
Spinnakers - IPA
Review: Brad Arnst
http://www.canbeer.com/beer/spinnakers-ipa-brad.html
It is very flavourful throughout, with occasional fruit notes.
McAuslan - Griffon Brown Ale
Review: Todd Kuipers
http://www.canbeer.com/beer/mcauslan-griffonbrown-todd.html
I was surprised at how dry it was, not extreme, but my expectation is that
brown ales tend to be a bit sweeter.
Labatt - Ice Beer
Review: Todd Kuipers
http://www.canbeer.com/beer/labatt-icebeer-todd.html
Easy to drink and more impressive than the base-line Labatt product, but
not near the refreshement level you can get with many other beers.
REVIEWS - Bars/Pubs
----------------------------------------------------------------
Original Joe's - Calgary, AB
Review: Todd Kuipers
http://www.canbeer.com/bars/alberta/originaljoes-todd.html
10 of 12 brews on tap were independent, showing a good variety from both
BC and Alberta (with emphasis at the time on Joseph Warner and Tree).
Friar's Pub and Eatery - Calgary, AB
Review: Brad Arnst
http://www.canbeer.com/bars/alberta/friars-brad.html
Very friendly, attentive service. I never had to wait for anything. Most
importantly my glass was never allowed to get empty.
The James Joyce Irish Pub and Restaurant - Calgary, AB
Review: Brad Arnst
http://www.canbeer.com/bars/alberta/jamesjoyce-brad.html
But, one thing has never changed. They have one of the best lunches in
Calgary. It is the "Carvery". There is always some kind of freshly roasted
beef, or ham, or...
Spinnakers Brewpub - Victoria, BC
Review: Brad Arnst
http://www.canbeer.com/bars/britishcolumbia/spinnakers-brad.html
They get an extra half a point rating on the washrooms by having a
blackboard, with chalk!
Swans Buckerfield's Brewery - Victoria, BC
Review: Brad Arnst
http://www.canbeer.com/bars/britishcolumbia/swans-brad.html
Nice, clean, bright pub. Fits in very well with Victoria.
