vary widely. These people have fun with their brewing, and try wildly
original experiments with almost every batch, somehow keeping the
quality up. Last time I stopped in they were serving an "Irish
Potato Stout", the mash for which included a bunch of instant mashed
potatoes. Surprisingly good. I work in Oakland most of the time
these days, staying in that neighborhood (which is most decidedly
not upscale, as you noticed) and using the Bison as my "local"."

Triple Rock Brewery - 1920 Shattuck Ave; 94704 (415)843-2739.
Brewpub on Shattuck and Hearst - just below the university
Big green neon sign. They make and EXCELLENT Pale Ale.
Also a "red rock" and a black porter you could stand a spoon in.
"This is one of the best around. Several excellent beers; they also
usually have a specialty brew available. The selection varies, but
they always have at least an amber and a dark. Recommended!"
"The TR appears to be 3 blocks North of the main drag (University)
on the West side of the street. A nice place with a "campus" feel to it.
The bartender was friendly, and knew lots of the people by name.
They didn't sell sampler sized but he let me taste everything in
2-3 oz glasses.
Red Rock Ale Little head and not highly carbonated. Authentic
real ale hop taste and a good hoppy aftertaste. Good red-copper
color. I would rate this in the 40's!
Pinnacle Pale Ale Pale but not blond beer with just a little
head. Not as much hop taste as Red Rock, but a nice sharp aftertaste.
The aftertaste was almost metallic but stopping on the pleasant sharp
side. Someone else might not care for the aftertaste.
Rock of the Nile They claimed this was Black Rock with less of
the burnt roast malt - 5% alcohol. I found it too burnt and coaly,
especially after the Red Rock.
Red Rock Porter This tasted to me like Rock of the Nile! Still
Burnt and roasty.
Total for 3 beers (small size - 1/2 pint?) plus tips $6. Bought
a t-shirt for $13 which turned out to be very nice."
Whole Foods Market - 3000 Telegraph; (415)

Hopland and Ft. Bragg, not far from Hopland). "I've only had their
beer bottled (26 oz. bottles). The pub looked nice but I didn't have
time for a beer. The beer is very good; they make a Porter, an Amber,
a light beer, and a wheat beer which I haven't tried. The others are
all excellent, especially the porter - dark and smooth, almost creamy,
yum yum! Their beer is available all over the Bay Area in bottles.
I highly recommend it."

"Outdoor beer garden. Beer is brewed in an old water toper right behind
the bar. A sample including 6 oz of each of their Amber Ale, Porter,
Stout. Amber was nicely hopped with a little bittering, very
refreshing with a good body. Porter was the best porter we had tasted
anywhere. Great body without being too heavy, lightly hopped.
Stout - creamy head, strong `coffee` taste, heavily hopped.
They also had a Wheat lager and a wheat-honey brew. All brews can be
purchased in 22 ounce bottles to go."

Brewpub and Microbrewery!
Possibly the best beers in the United States emanate from this ever-
growing micro. Pale Ale, Porter, and Stout are available all year; a
new Bock, SN's first bottom-fermented beer, appeared in spring of 1990,
with a repeat showing in spring of 1991; and in winter, the powerful,
aromatic Bigfoot barleywine appears, ready to challenge all comers.
The brewpub in Chico is big and spiffy, only a couple of years old.

California -- Clayton:
Royal Oak - 6200 Center St
Pub Restaurant

California -- Costa Mesa:
Goat Hill Tavern - 1380 Newport Blvd; (714)548-8428.
Pub. They claim 91 (now 96) taps, but I only counted 73. Of course, I was
on my third pint by then, so... Possibly the most impressive

Goodbody's - 2915 N. Maroa Ave
Pub

California -- Fullerton:
Brians
Pub (maybe??)
Fullerton Hofbrau - 327 State College Blvd; 92631 (714)870-7400
Pub Restaurant
"This place was more of a restaurant with a bar than a pub. They
ordinarily have 4 brews, which are Knight's Light, Prince's Pilsner,
King's Lager, and Duke's Bock. Prince's Pilsner was very light - it
was pretty close to Miller Lite. King's Lager was a decent beer - worth
trying, but nothing special. The bock, however, was excellent - I wish
I could have taken some home with me. (I was told that they would have
gallon boxes of beer to tkae home in the near future, but I
missed it.)"

California -- Hayward:
Buffalo Bill's - 1082 B Street; 94541 (415)886-9823.
Brewpub at 2nd street. Own beer plus Sierra Nevada
and others on tap; Darts, pub food. I was not overly impressed by
their beers (but it was at the end of a long day).

California -- Hollister:
San Andreas Brewing - 737 San Benito St; 95023 (408)637-7074.
Brewpub about 45 minutes east of Monterey. "Their Earthquake Pale Ale had
no head to speak of but combined some nice malt and very hoppy bouquet.
The Seismic ale was very fruity and harked back to some of the Lambics.
It was made using some wild NY yeasts. The earthquake porter had its
taste softened a touch by the coffee and chocolate complexities brought
to the roasted malts. The Kit Fox Amber had a fruity aroma, medium body,
no head but was a nice hop and malt blend. Now, the Cherry Ale was a
definite throwback to the Belgian styles with serious cherry in the
bouquet and the taste but was an interesting addition to the four
other offerings." (Not hurt seriously by quake damage, despite being
near its epicenter.)

California -- Hollywood:
Gorky's II - 1716 North Cahuenga Blvd; (213)463-4060.
Brewpub

California -- Hopland:
Mendocino Brewery - 13351 Hwy 101; 95449 (707)744-1015.
Brewpub and Microbrewery 120 miles North of San Francisco on 101:
"A very nice pub with good home brewed beer. Their
beer is superb, especially draft Red Tail Ale. The original California
Brew Pub. Peregrine Ale and Eye of the Hawk (seasonal) are excellent.
Live music, indoor and outdoor (in a hops garden) seating and good food."
<ed: don't tell anyone, but we had the only cask of Red Tail *EVER*

California -- Larkspur:
The Marin Brew Co. - 1809 Larkspur Landing Circle; 94939 (415)461-4677.
Brewpub Restaurant.
"Very good! One of the best around. Large place, good pub food. The
amber and porter are both excellent, the wheat beer was good but too
light for my taste. Recommended."
"Since I don't recall reading about this place yet, I thought I'd do my
part. The Marin Brewing Company, located in Larkspur, makes some
excellent brews. So far, I've tasted their Albion Amber (very good medium
bodied beer), Hefe Weiss (exceptionally creamy --how do they do that?-- an
unfiltered. Served sometimes with a slice of lemon), Raspberry Trail Ale
(light ale with raspberry aftertaste, good for hot days), and Pale Ale
(very close to Sierra Nevada; seemed to be a little heavier on the hops).
Along with the great beer is great food and entertainment. If anyone is
passing by Larkspur (north of Sausalito, south of San Rafael), swing by
Larkspur Landing for a pint."

California -- Lebec:
Lebek's Okie Girl - 658 Lebec Road; 93243 (805)248-6451.

Barney's Beanery - 8447 Santa Monica Blvd; (213)654-2287.
Restaurant
West Hollywood has a big selection, but the obscure ones are old.
Famous for its chili.
Belmont Brewing Company
Brewpub. Belmont is located at the foot of the Belmont
Pier in Long Beach. They have good food and reasonable prices. The
location is great for watching the sun set. The beers they have vary, but
they usually have a Pale Ale, Amber Ale and Porter or Stout. The first time
I went there the beer seemed a little on the malty side and not very well
hopped. Since then I think they have lightened up their beers to suit the
lo-cal/light tastes of the average Southern Californian. Pints are $2.50.
Belmont Shores: Belmont; 25 39th Place (213)433-3891 Same as above?
The Billabong - is on the same block on North Fairs Oaks.

Heritage Brewing Co. - 24921 Dana Point Harbor Rd; 92629 (714)240-2060.
Brewpub located down by Dana Point harbor and is a considerable distance
from downtown LA. They had some of the best beer I have tasted. They make
a Pale Ale that is very well hopped and it reminded me of Sierra Nevada
Pale Ale. I don't know too much about the food there.

John Bull Pub - 958 S Fair Oaks Ave (818)441-4353
Brewpub
(Fair Oaks south from 210, or turn left off the end of the Pasadena

In Pasadena, it is also reported they are a pub selling English
imports and not a brewpub. Anyone been there lately?
Loch Ness Monster Pub - 66 N Fair Oaks Ave; (818)795-2160
Pub. It is in the back corner of a parking lot at the corner.
Los Angeles - 1845 South Bundy (213)207-1000
Huh? In West LA
McGinty's - Wilshire and 26th

and a big variety, but they really don't have the facilities for it.
Molly Malone's on Fairfax near Sunset in Hollywood.
Pub
Robin Hood's Tavern - Burbank and Woodman
Pub, with another good selection of English Beers; bring your darts.
Truly Yours - 18588 Ventura Blvd

Good food, Anchor Steam and Red Tail
Victor Sales & Marketing - 4510 S. Boyle Ave; 90058
Importer of Red Brew-Star, a Yugoslavian beer.
Wine House - Cotner
Beer Store on the West side, near Sepulveda blvd. between Olympic & Pico.
They have good wine, good cognacs, a temperature-controlled
room full of rarities, great champagnes, and interesting spirits.
They keep the lights dimmed in the beer area, and don't put too
many bottles out), you often can get reasonable beer. I've gotten
Sierra Nevada clean enough to culture the yeast, and others report doing
so with Chimay...

California -- Los Gatos:
Black Watch
Pub
Hannigans
Pub. A pub atmosphere, but it's a single malt lover's paradise! The last
time I was there (2 or 3 years ago), they had 85 (counting different
ages of a single label) different single malts. As I recall, they had
some pretty decent imported beers on tap as well, but with all that
scotch to choose from, I couldn't find the time to sample the beer.
Prices at that time ranged from 2.50 to 12.50 for a very generous
pour. The guy that took me there told me they also conduct tastings.

Los Gatos Brewing Co

Beverage Warehouse - 4935 McConnell
Liquor Store. (I think this is on the corner of Culver Blvd and McConnell.
"They have a very good selection of domestic micros and interesting
imports albeit stored in the varm LA air under the fluorescents.")

California -- Menlo Park:
Beltramos - 1540 El Camino Real; (408)
Liquor Store in Menlo Park. More of a wine
store, but still a lot of beer. Lots of single malts also
(too bad my budget was running short, because single-malts
are not well represented in Dallas. 20-30 brands, maybe, but
I say 30 in Beltramos that I have only read about.)
Draegers - 1010 University; (408)
Liquor Store

California -- Milbrea:

California -- Monterey:
Monterey Brewing - 638 Wade St; 93940 (408)375-3634
Brewpub in the Cannery Row district of Monterey.
"It is a small stand-alone building and a night time rock and roll bar.
It featured a pale ale that was very hoppy. Their Amber was a
wonderful brew of roasted and had a hint of caramel flavor. Their
porter was nearly opaque and the malt flavor practically separated in
your mouth for easy evaluation. Wonderful!" (Not damaged by recent
earthquake.)

California -- Morgan Hill:
Let's Brew - 16965 Monterey Rd
Pub Restaurant

California -- Mountain View:
Tied House - 954 Villa St.; 94041 (415)965-2739.
Brewpub with food (supposedly good!)
"Yuppie to the core, too much so for my taste. First time I went the beer
was mediocre, since then it's been much better. They have a light, amber
and dark all the time, and one or 2 specialty brews that vary. The light's
too light for me, and the amber is pretty light too. The dark is what I
would call an amber; both the amber and dark are OK, but unmemorable."
I on the other hand (JRM) found it very interesting. While not great
they had 8 very distinct brews. Worth a trip for the variety.

Nevada City Brewing Co. - 75 Bost Ave; 95959 (916)265-2446.
Microbrewery. Brewery Tours Sat & Sun 1-5PM.
"I stopped for a tour of the Nevada City Brewing Company
The brewery is run by Gene Downing, owner, with the help of his "Brew
Rats." The "Brew Rats" must be paid minimum wage plus all the beer they
can drink, because I didn't see an empty glass (including mine) all the
time I was there. Gene brews lagers, exclusively. His two standards are
a light lager, called "Gold" and a brown lager, "Dark", both hopped with
Cascade. He also brews up occasional batches of bock. He has two 400 gal
stainless steel, refrigerant jacketed, primary fermenters, and six
lagering tanks of similar volume. His production is about 600 gallons a
week - about 60% of it going out in barrels to several local pubs with
the remainder bottled in magnum (1.5 liter) champagne bottles. If you're
on Route 80 near 49 and feel like talking beer and trash, its a good
stop. From 49 you take the Ridge Road exit, turn left and go back over
the freeway, take the first right which is Bost Avenue. The brewery is in
a warehouse-type complex about three blocks down Bost, next to a nude
furniture place. I think the "tours" are after 3 PM, only."

they have 17 (!!) other micro-brewed berrs from northern california on
tap." <georg at Sybase.COM>

Brewpub scheduled to open '91 (in Sept still not open!). "The brewmaster
went through a previous incarnation in a back-alley place in Fallbrook
(50 mi. north). I liked his beer there better than Old Columbia's;
it had a better flavor and a bit more hops bitterness. He's
currently making beer to sell in 3-4 restaurants around town. The
on-site place is part of a renovation of an old (70 years ago)
brewery building near Pacific Highway and Washington St. into
a brewery/office/shop complex."

Old Columbia Brewery and Grill - 1157 Columbia; 92101 (619)234-2739.
Brewpub in downtown San Diego. "The first brewpub in San Diego.
It has taken the path to long-term success (I suppose) by catering
to the yuppie crowd, and their market research must have worked,
because the place is always crowded. The beer isn't bad, but it's
a little lacking in character. A glass wall separates the dining
area and brewery, where the tanks and other equipment are visible."
"Out of all of the brewpubs
and microbreweries I've been to, he has the most outstanding beers. When
we were there they had 7! Including 2 wheat beers. All were GREAT.
The food is also very good, and the prices were reasonable."

Bar near Fillmore. Open for lunch. "This place has an amazing selection
of microbrews, perhaps like nowhere else in the nation. They
typically have 13 <16> brews on tap, usually 6-8 of which are local
microbrews, e.g., try the blue whale ale or devil's brew stout.
They also have about 50 microbrews in bottles, not to mention other
hard to find imports and fun things like soki. Very trendy
Haight-esque crowd which seems uninterested in the amazing
selection - wear black if you want to fit in." Also 85 beers in bottles.

Brewpub and Restaurant.
They have three beers, Marzen, Dunkles, and Export (they alternate between
Dunkles and Double Bock) and good food.
Marzen - Gold/copper color with reasonable head. Dry astringent
taste, with the aftertaste prickly on the edges and a slightly sour
(wheat?) taste. Normal body. Nice. I would give this a 37.
Dunkles - Dark enough so you can barely see through (reminded me
of Newcastle Brown in color). Aroma has roast malt, some hops
(couldn't recognise what kind). There was a husky-grainy taste.
Sweet wort taste changing to an astringent grain in the aftertaste. I
would think this a little flawed and rate it 30-32. Of course, what
real style is "dunkles"?
Export - paler in color than the sample I got of 'export'. Light
aroma*. Sweet clean taste. This is a beer to drink for a long time.
Good body and almost a mouthfilling sense, but a little fizzy. Not
much aftertaste.

Brewpub. "They have three brews, a pale ale,
an amber ale, and a stout. For $2.50, you can get a "sampler", a
small glass of each ale. Operated by a Chinese family so food is
Chinese influenced. Their beers are not hearty--rather thin, but their
Pale Ale is the hoppiest beer around. Their "Porter" is so thin that
light can shine through it."
<JRM> "Their ales were not the best, but the pale ale was very nice.
Good food (Havana beef!)"
