The other day, I bought what I thought was a case of Guinness Draught
"Widget" Cans. When I unpacked them, I noticed a suspicious red stripe
around the top of each can extolling a "SMOOTHER, CREAMIER TASTE NEW
FLOATING DRAUGHT SYSTEM". Well! There's apparently a piece of
plastic(?) floating in these cans to provide something approximating the
"pub" pour that the Widget cans (apparently gone now?) gave. I did
notice a difference in taste - it wasn't as good as the widget can IMO.
I could tell as soon as I popped a top that the head-rolling "oomph" was
gone. Sure, my buddy and I downed a few, but our hearts just weren't in
it. We went through the motions. Even the "flipped upside-down pint
glass pour trick" didn't cheer us up. Why the change? Did a Widget can
put out someone's eye or something? I'm very sad.

SNIP

Someone told me (someone with no qualifications as a knowledgeable beer
person) that the floating piece of plastic is the new widget, and the
glued-to-the-bottom thingy is gone. Why? Who knows? I did notice that they
don't foam up right like the old ones. Maybe just sticking in a widget is
easier (and cheaper) than gluing one on the bottom, but they certainly didn't
pass the savings onto the consumer. Anyone else???
