IRC Chat

[DesotoFireflite]

On my IRC chat module, I connect to 2 servers for my general users, which are public.

irc.bbses.info 6667
irc.prison.net 6667

when a user or me goes into irc chat, a menu comes up and lists both servers as it should. Where the problem comes in, that after you pick the server, the channel list comes up and shows all channels for both servers. Is ther a way
to seperate the channels for each indvidual server so if you choose irc.bbs.info, you get the list for them, and if you choose irc.prison.net, you will get the list for them. Below is how I have my modopts setup now.

Chat section in my modopts.ini
[chat_sec]
; Over-ride default IRC server/port and channel (if desired) here:
irc_server = irc.bbses.info 6667,irc.prison.net 6667
irc_channel = #bbs,#chats,#stocks,#bash,#stress,#hackers, #realnews,#politics
irc_seclevel = 80

hey you need to stop popping in and leaving all the time. that stuff is annoying. if you're not there to talk, dont login.

bbses.info no longer does bbs services, that irc server is just for long time friends to use.

right now your ip is blocked.

connect to irc.synchro.net instead.

That's fine, I've got more than 2 my users can use. I would have talked if I saw you on the list, just didn't see anyone I knew. Besides, I've been testing the setup lately. You are not the irc police. Why do you have to pop off at everyone. Sorry I bothered you. We all learn at a different pace. L8r

well you've been going in there and just quitting in 2 seconds for a long time. i'm not just talking about today.

those irc clients on bbs seem like a good idea but really you get people visiting who say hello or whatever and leave in a few seconds. what good is that?

you can make your own channel for your bbs if you want, i'll remove your ip from iptables.

it's better just to not have those irc clients on bbses, though.

chat_sec.js could be modified to read multiple channel-lists from modopts.ini pretty easily. I'll see about doing that.

I know, I'm very guilty of that, but I have participated also. Just been doing a lot of testing lately.

Thank You, I'll look into that. Bare with me, i'm still going to be doing a bit more testing, but it won't be much more.

I realize that, I have locked out #synchronet and one other to regular users, and made them for visiting sysops only, security level 80, and I manually approve that. I'm setting up another IRC for general users for public areas only. I was reading today that the info.bbses is actually closed down except for a few friends, so I'm taking that off, but I have other public areas. I am trying to be responsable about this, while at the same time, giving a legitmate user a place to go.

I don't like getting snapped at, as I'm sure you don't either. If I violate some rule, just tell me, and I will try to curtail it, or give an explination of why it was done.

I committed a change you can try.

Since you're specifying the IRC server port numbers in modopts.ini, you might have to either remove those (since they are the default ports, they should still work fine), or use the syntax:

irc.bbses.info 6667=<channel_list>

Though I didn't try that (with the port number like that). Curious how that works.

visiting users probably wont want to actually participate in irc. irc is a day long process usually. someone posts someone and someone answers in hour later usually. people arent at the keyboard all the time.

i suggest you just create your own channel and have users dump in there.
put in a trivia bot or something for activity.
tell users what irc client they should use outside the bbs so they can park there and wait for activity.

i have the rules in the MOTD.
people on irc dont like to see people who join for a minute and then leave, and keep doing it. i don't normally snap at people for doing it. i usually give them x amount of chances and try to talk to them and get a response.
