Tj finally managed to get my FidoNet configuration moving forward. However, I
can't seem to get it work, but most of it is because of my lack of
understanding. Does anyone have a recent guide for setting up FidoNet on SBBS?
I tried following this guide and many of the options no longer match :

https://shadowscope.com/2012/11/how-to-set-up-sbbs-for-fidonet/

I'm also using a raspberry pi.

I managed to get the backbone.na imported and successfully configured, along
with various parameters in echocfg. I ran sbbsecho and nothing appears to
happen. I'm sure its my configuration.

First, Tj mentions this :

"Your node number is 1:104/115"

"I am all setup here. I'm not sure about the password. It might be too long
for sbbs but we will try it. It's all setup here. I just tried to force a
poll to you and it seemed to work, so try to poll me and see if you get any
errors.
The info for me if u need it is
Connect to address 1:15/0
host: region15.net
port: 24555 (For now. I'm not sure when but some day I will be change this back
to default)"

So is 1:15/0 the hub? Thats what I used in "echocfg" for the linked nodes :
Address: 1:15/0
Domain:region15
Archive:ZIP
AreaFix Support: Yes
AreaFix Password: <the password Tj was talking about>

I also created linked nodes (per the instructions above) for each node:
1:ALL
2:ALL
3:ALL
4:ALL
5:ALL
6:ALL

Each one routes to: 1:15/0

Again, I am no sure what the hell I am doing.

Lastly, I don't know what to do with the region15 parameter or even the 24555
port number.

You entered that address in that section?

number, and replicate that for all your groups.

While you're in there

scfg > Message Areas (fidonet) > Export Areas > areas.bbs

Choose to overwrite if this is your only network otherwise you may want to
write to a separate file and then merge. You should end up with
/sbbs/data/areas.bbs (or AREAS.BBS possibly). Enter your uplink when
prompted, 1:15/0

There are several passwords. What is known as the "session password" is what
is used to authenticate with binkd/binkit or whatever. Areafix passwords are
provided when you want to add/remote areas and various other things.

Try sending a netmail to areafix@1:15/0 with your areafix password as the subject
(should be no more than 8 characters). In the body of the message put
%LINKED
%UNLINKED
%HELP

Then send the mesage. This will show you which echoes you are subscribed to,
or not, and some help. You wont get anything if you don't subscribe.

That should work. I did a telnet test and it shows it will answer for 1:15.0

Escape character is '^]'.

For echocfg > Linked Nodes for Fidonet I just have
1:ALL

Domain should actually be fidonet.I don't have one just for my hub. You can
set "route to" to be your hub so anything destined for zone 1 will go via
the hub.

Right. So try sending a netmail and see if it at least gets that far. I sent
you one, you can try sending to sysop@1:124/5016

Thanks Nelgin! I sent you several test messages.

I figured out where the "host" and "port" go. In the Linked Node option for
echocfg, theres a BinkP setting. I set:

Host: region15.net
Port: 24555

Does anyone know what "Poll", "Authentication", "Encryption" and "Source
Address" should be set to?

Poll is yes or no?

Authentication is plain password, CDRAM-MD5 only, or both?

Encryption is supported or unsupported?

Hi Minex,

None of the 25 (!?) nodelist entries of Mr. Barlow specify this none-standard
binkp port. So shouldn't that just be 24554? (Or left out if possible, so the
default is used)

Depends on what you agreed upon with your link.

Mi> Authentication is plain password, CDRAM-MD5 only, or both?

Preferable CRAM-MD5 only, but it depends on the capabilities of the system
you're connecting to. Either way, "both" should always work.

Mi> Encryption is supported or unsupported?

Depends on the capabilities of the system you're connecting to.

Is that a question? ;)

Mi> Does anyone know what "Poll", "Authentication", "Encryption" and "Source
Mi> Address" should be set to?

If you set poll to yes your node will poll that link whenever your BINKPOLL
event runs, or you touch data/binkpoll.now.

Authentication should normaly be set to Plain or CRAM-MD5. That will work with
all mailers. In this case I would set it to Plain-Password Only since that node
is running BBBS and BBBS does not support CRAM-MD5 (at this time).

Encryption can be left at supported. BBBS also does not support encryption so
you could turn it off but you should get a successful connection anyway.

Source address can be left blank, unless you have a reason to change it.

Mi> Poll is yes or no?

It's up to you if you want to poll periodically.

I hope that get you a little closer.. :)

I received one test message. I tried to send one to you but you're not in
the nodelist yet. If you're not in by Friday then you probably need to talk
to your net 104 coordinator.

Same problem I had, but I had some GREAT fellow Sysops (ALOT of help from My
brother, Nugax!) I'd love to help ya set it up (Paying it forward) whenever
you're free you can msg me (log on my board, or send me a email, or if you're
on FB I can give you my FB name) If you log on my BBS I can privately send you
my info. It's easier than you think, but it is a little confussing because the
wiki's don't explain it well enough for the totally new sysops to grasp it.
