I guess I am missinbg something here. All the docs I find are for V2. I am
trying to send my FidoNet app. I have setup SCFG Network for FidoNet but it
does not send the Netmail. Am I missing something? I was told I did not need
anything out side Synchronet to set this up. Any Help is appreciated. I have
read the docs maybe I missed something.

You need a scanner/tosser, which is included with Synchronet (sbbsecho), and a
mailer (binkd, Radius, Argus, Taurus, Irex, etc.), which is not included with
Synchronet, to make this happen. The scanner/tosser imports and exports
netmail and echomail to and from your message bases, the mailer handles the
actual transfer of mail between you and your various hubs.

did you look here : http://time.synchro.net:81/fidonet.ssjs &
http://time.synchro.net:81/argus.ssjs and did you open port 24554
& do this :

from sbbscon.txt :

3. Initializing the SBBSCTRL Environment Variable
-------------------------------------------------
For Windows NT-based operating systems, goto the Windows Control Panel->
System->Advanced->Environment Variables->System Variables->New...
Variable: SBBSCTRL
Variable Value: c:\sbbs\ctrl
(replace c:\sbbs\ctrl with the full path to your ctrl directory)

for xp : put a copy of pkzip.exe & pkunzip.exe in your
\windows\system & \windows\system32 dir.

for 2000 : put a copy of pkzip.exe & pkunzip.exe in your
\winnt\system & \winnt\system32 dir.

No, you still need a mailer, like Binkd, Argus, Taurus, Irex, etc.

Ok here is where I am confused, where does binkd go? and I have all the docs to
configure it. Do I run it as a service or does it get executed on demand? Other
than that I have everything else setup thanks to Lord Time ( Which by the way
in your example you had a message group called Rats' Nest,,,I knew a Rat's Nest
running on an Amiga BBS setup run by Mama Rat....any relation?)I think you need
to publish Lord Times setup doc for fido it would eliminate a lot of the
questions.

For quite some time I had a batch file that scanned for outbound packets with
sbbsecho, polled my uplinks with binkd, tossed with sbbsecho, then slept for x
number of hours (using a sleep.exe type thing I found on the interwebs) and it
worked just fine. It was basically a slightly expanded version of the batch
file I wrote just to ease the testing of my setup in the beginning.

Recently I decided to let Synchronet handle as much stuff as I could get it to
so I didn't need to rely on too many external apps. Now I have separate
scripts for all of the networks that I belong to, all of which do pretty much
the same as what's above except for the sleep-for-x-hours thing - Sync does the
scheduling for me, and I can poll my uplinks manually from my sysop menu. I
haven't yet messed with semaphores to trigger a poll when I have new mail to
send, but that's on my list.

So to answer your question, you can run binkd externally but there are ways to
control it from within Synchronet. I'd recommend just running it and your
tosser manually for now (so you can watch things get moved around and know that
it's working) and then worry about tidying it up after you know it's working.

> I think you need to publish Lord Times setup doc for fido it would eliminate

Lord Time's guides are good and will get your FTN setup working, but they are
step-by-step guides that tell you what to do and don't tell you what you're
doing. I refused to follow them when I set my shit up because I knew that I
wouldn't walk away with at least a basic understanding of how these things
worked.

I think that if we wanted things to be that much easier, a better thing to ask
for would be scanning/tossing and a binkp mailer to be integrated into
Synchronet. Sysops could plug in a few details about their networks, and the
system could take care of the rest. Using and promoting a step-by-step guide
that doesn't actually explain anything is really just an in-between stage in
place of having an FTN Setup Wizard of some kind.

Actually what I was looking for was a where does this go type information. I
know how it works, I also saw the guide posted for radius but didn't use it
stuck with binkd and actually it tossed the mail out for the application for
fido. So I am setup just waiting for the official numbers. I read everything I
get my hands on and some things are vague and somethings are just step by
steps. Now if I took the two and put them together it would be a real nice
howto with informative info on why this goes here and what it does. Also I was
meaning the FTN setup should be included in the synchronet documentation.

Probably. The version I'm using doesn't have that option, so I haven't tried
it.

Depending upon your Fidonet "role" and the arrangement with your Fidonet
uplink (hub), you can probably get by just running binkd on-demand,
perhaps even as a scheduled event in Synchronet.

binkd -p -P 1:123/456 binkd.cfg
^ ^ ^ ^
Poll-only poll-node config file

In your configuration, you must identify the information for the
destination node (1:123/456, in this example). (Often this information
is stored in binkd.inc which is INCluded from binkd.cfg, which contains
your system configuration. The node information might look something
like:

node 1:123/456 1.2.3.4 password
^ ^ ^
Node info IP/host session password

You'll need the same node configuration, even if your uplink/hub
requires that you run in daemon-mode (always listening for deliveries).
However, in that case, you'll want to run with the '-D' (or apparently
the Windows service, which I'm unfamiliar with) and omit the on-demand
polling above.

Okay . . . that just goes along with what I was saying. If you understand a
bit about FTN, if you understand a bit about binkp, then it's pretty easy to
just set up your binkd configuration file and also to get your tosser working.

Yeah I'm aware that this is what you were saying. And *I* was saying that if
we're going to hold people's hands with step by step guides that don't teach
them anything, we might as well just take it one step further and let the
software do it all for them. I'm not saying that as a negative thing, but
rather that the result would be the same and with less trouble for all
involved.

Sir you are so correct. I would rather learn it again like it did the first
time. But the first time I had someone who understood that I wasn't asking for
him to do it but to point me in the direction and when somehting didn't quite
register, explain it so I could then understand and help the next guy. It's all
coming back like riding a bike. I really appreciate everyone for helping and
being understanding. alot of my questions are where can I find this or that
cause sometimes digging leads to a dead end. Like today I had the website but
it was gone and did not know about the ftp and that it was still up. Again
thank you.

BinkD V0.9 has a flag to install it as a service and what config file to use.
Once it is installed as a service you can make changes to your config as
needed. So far so good on Fido. Now to get Netsurge to hook me up with a few
other echos.

Your already in SciNet which is all you really need, jk/lol.

You can either get AmigaNet via FTN like fidonet or via newslink in
synchronet via news.bbs-scene.org, it's up to you. Let me know how you want
the feed and i'll get you going.
