So I updated to 3.20 from 3.19x today on my home test system.

i got sbbsctrl.zip sbbs_run and sbbs_dev

then i ran the jsexec update.js or whatever and it said it updated
my user file to the tab format.

after that, i could not login as any existing user. when i created a new user, that one would work, but not the pre-update user.

I had to delete all my users and truncate, login and create sysop user.

did i do something wrong, or is this to be expected?
will makeuser.js work if i try to export my old users, upgrade and then reimport them via makeuser.js ?

You should've stopped right there at "could not login". Did you look at your data/user.tab file and confirm your existing users were in there? Did you confirm you were actually running sbbs v3.20? Did you examine the log output (for any errors) at the time of login attempt?

That is not expected or happening to anyone else, so I suspect you did something wrong.

Don't do that. Just delete your data/user.tab file and run 'jsexec update' again. That'll run exec/upgrade_to_v320 and import the "old users" into the new file base (user.tab). Or you can can just run exec/upgrade_to_v320 again. Either way.

sbbs_run.* contains all the same files as sbbsctrl.zip, so that's not necessary.

yeah i'm running 3.20a https://i.imgur.com/azzLJXJ.png
i didn't look at the log output though.
I didn't look at the user.tab file

what i did was extract sbbs_dev.zip sbbs_run.zip and sbbsctrl.zip on top of my c:\sbbs\ windows install

then i changed dir to sbbs\exec and ran jsexec.exe update.js

https://i.imgur.com/uyEqVgI.png
it looks like it worked ok from the output.
i can unzip my backups and try again and see what logs it outputs.
what log should i look at

sbbsctrl.zip (and sbbs_run.zip) contain stock v3.20 config files (e.g. main.ini), so if you did that, then when you run 'jsexec update.js' it's going to see the v3.20 config files and *not* upgrade to your v3.19 to v3.20.

> then i changed dir to sbbs\exec and ran jsexec.exe update.js

The correct instructions are here: https://wiki.synchro.net/install:dev

They do not include extracting sbbsctrl.zip into your sbbs directory tree.

The terminal server log output would have the details of any any login failure.

Sure, but the upgrade didn't work either.

it said it converted the 2 users successfully but didn't.

so i looked at this .tab file. are you really sure you want to do this and not use something like csv?

And were the 2 users in there?

Yes. Comma-separate data is a bad format.

all i did was unzip the files over existing files and
go to sbbs\exec and run jsexec.exe update.js

sbbsctrl.exe was closed when i did this.

Right, and it then "upgraded" the stock configuration files (you unzipped from sbbsctrl.zip) to v3.20, not *your* configuration files.

this is just a blank test system.
it's not my main bbs. also i always backup before making any changes.

I was just wondering if you knew what was going on. I'll wait until i update my real systems.
