Hello,
Today I've been trying to get Synchronet to work on my Debian server.
I'm having issues connecting with telnet. Even after setting it to a
non-default port (even though I'm doing some testing with root and
netstat shows port 23 is clear, I was still having issues with
binding), my connection is either refused or I connect and then receive
no activity. What's going on? Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks,
tomato

I'd make sure you don't have any other servers listening on port 23. When you
run Synchronet, does it give you any errors saying it can't bind to port 23?
If so, that's a sign that you have another server listening on port 23, which
could be what is accepting the connections.

Ok, I thought I was the only one having this same issue under Debian as
well. Nice to know that I am not. Still have not figured out why this
seems to be an issue. I will keep trying and once I get a solution, I
will post it here.

I ran a 'netstat -at' and looked for anything listening on port 23. The
only thing I have here on my end is the sbbs binary listening on it. As
the original poster stated, it seems SBBS answers, then just drops the
connection.

I'm sure you've checked this, but there aren't any strange IP tables blocking
access or redirecting the connection somewhere else? Are you running a firewall
like ufw? If you 'service ufw stop' does that help?

I'm no Linux expert, but I don't remember having any problems like that when I
set up my board on Ubuntu.

Mark.

Thanks for adding that comment, Mark. The last time I tinkered with Debian, I
believe that was the /exact/ issue I had, which is why I mentioned in my post
to check for any firewalls (I had forgotten the exact name, but you've covered
it now). Stopping that service was the answer at the time. Hopefully it's the
same for these guys.

Nick

I have a couple ideas here that might help. First off, make sure you run your
SBBS startup script as root (you can pass it off to a user in services.ini I
believe). But there has always been problems binding to low ports while trying
to start any daemon as a user.

Second, I'm not sure about the new Debian releases these days, but there might
be some kind of default firewall running in the background, with limited
settings that block all ports until you configure them properly.

Lastly, of course, make sure the proper ports are opened for traffic on your
router. This one probably isn't the issue, since everyone that runs a BBS knows
about this one. But figured I'd mention it anyways for the other person
involved.

Regards,
Nick

I'm always hesitant to run server apps as root in Linux - Seems like you're
inviting trouble if you do that. I recently did some searching online and
found a command in Linux to enable executables to bind to low ports when
running as a non-root user:
sudo setcap cap_net_bind_service=ep <some-binary>

To each their own. I have nothing of importance on my BBS machine, and it's
backed up nightly, so invite all the trouble you want to throw at it, you're
not going to worry me one bit even if the slim chance of anyone getting
anywhere they shouldn't be on my machine. It's pretty damn secure, I made sure
of it.. and every bit of activity is logged in detail. *shrug* Beats the hell
out of fighting with permissions all the time.

Nick
