I have my fidonet node number and now need to sign up for a feed and get
the hub number. I have some questions about the configuration
Here are some questions about your helpfile located here...
1/
http://time.synchro.net:81/fidonet.ssjs
---begin snippet from helpfile---
Now I just put these in my sbbs\exec directory, Pkzip and Pkunzip. In
order for your Sbbsecho to perform correctly. These files must be
included in your Environment variables in the PATH entry. This is so
Sbbsecho can uncompress and or compress messages.
---end snippet from helpfile---
In the above snippet taken from the help file, I am not sure how to get
these files included in my environment path. I thought the PATH
environment only held directories?
In windows, if I right click on my computer and go to the environment
tab its split into two 1) system envion variables and 2) user environ
variables. The path variable is in the system part currently and I have:
SBBSCTRL=C:\SBBS\CRTL
SBBSNODE=C:\SBBS\NODE21
How should this pkzip, pkunzip now be set up in the environment
2/
In the section where we are setting up the fidonet nodes (ssbsecho
configuration) such as
1:xxx/xxx
1:ALL
2:ALL
etc...
I did not understand this part.
I know the first node will be my HUB, but what other nodes (1:ALL, etc)
should I have in there.
3/ This question is about the radius setup near the end of the tutorial.
how will these guys connect to me binkp or telnet. What the coordinator
has told me is this:
---begin snippet from coordinator---
Being that you said you will be installing Radius, I am listing your
connection type as binkp, the standard port for binkp is 24554, no
need to change that as it wont interfere with your BBS. Since your BBS
is independently listening on telnet port 8000, I did not list telnet
on your listing as the BBS would not deal with Fido mailer
connections, Radius will be handling your direct interface with
Fidonet.. Radius does offer telnet and ifcico connection abilities,
ITN port 60177 for telnet and IFC port 60179 for ifcico, I have
included those in your listing as well, but 99.9% of your connection
abilities will be utilized via binkp.
---end snippet from coordinator---
Will I have to open 24554, and 60177 in my router and forward to bbs
machine?
4/ I've been assigned a fidonet node number and have to sign up here for
a feed and hub number (http://www.cassell.us/formxp/index.php?fid=29)
and need some explanations to some of the fields.
a) Will I be using something called the Binkp protocol?
b) How do I want to deal with mail and file delivery (crash or poll)?
c)if crash, will the binkd be running on a nonstandard port? I have to
state it.
d)will I want to route netmail for other fidonet nodes besides myself?

why not ask your feed these questions, i'm sure they'll be more than happy to

i'm pretty sure lord time's helpfile isnt enough to get you up and running at

i do recall runemaster had a great fidonet synchronet tutorial, you should

It's pretty straight forward and easy to follow except for the questions I
had about the pkzip part. What I think he meant there thought was to add
c:\sbbs\exec (the path where his pkzip, pkunzip are) the the ENVVIORNMENT
PATH variable. I am sure of it.
The fidonet nodes in sbbsecho config part still has me in the dark.

Yes. And even that is old information as the newest default SBBS and SBBSECHO
configurations use Info-Zip (zip.exe and unzip.exe) instead of pkzip.
> The fidonet nodes in sbbsecho config part still has me in the dark.
If you're just doing echomail and zone 1 netmail, you only need 2 entries, one
for your uplink and one for everyone else (e.g. 1:ALL).

That was my preferred method. I didnt want to have c:\sbbs\exec in the path,
so i droped them in a dir off of c:\sbbs\exec and put that dir in the path.
But it looks like it was not needed in any event as the latest versions use
zip and unzip instead.

Ok, that is much clearer. One question though. If I only have those two
entires. Would I be still able to send netmail to someone in another zone
say Zone 3? Will it go to my hub and somehow be routed into zone 3, even
though I don't specify a 3:ALL?
Thanks.

1) httxxxp:// time.synchro.net:81/fidonet.ssjs
2)
httxxxp://eob-bbs.com/web.archive/bbs/net229.darktech.org/fidosetup/index.html
I am not sure why by remove the xxx's that I put in the http.
Now.
In helpfile (1) under scfg -> Fidonet echomail and netmail
Inbound File Directory = \blah\blah\in\
Echo Mail Direcotry = \blah\blah\echo\
Netmail Directory = \blah\blah\out\
... and these are stuck too when also configuring radius further down the
page.
I.E. he maintins in the radius gui setup outbound = \blah\blah\out
But in helpfile (2) under scfg -> Fidonet echomail and netmail
Inbound File Directory = \blah\blah\in\
Echo Mail Base Directory = \blah\blah\echo\
Netmail Directory = \blah\blah\netmail\
BUT further down where the guy is configuring argus/radius
Outbound = \blah\blah\out
Initally when I read the first helpfile because he used the netmail directory
and the radiuos outbound directory were set to the same, I thought they were
the same thing. Maybe not? But in helpfile 2, the other guy has a seperate
netmail directory from his argus/radius outbound.
Back to helpfile 1 In his radius setup under TCP/IP Daemon Configuration on
the general tab, he has BinkP = 24554 but later on down in the helpfile in
the same dialog box but this time under the nodes tab a 24555 port appears.
I am not sure if this is a typo or if his hub is using a non-standard binkp
port (one other than 24554), so they can speak to each other.

FR> Wait! I misread the last hops on the two traces. Note the trace on

FR> lactwahed51-p2-0.network.tds.net. That does not resolve to the same

I would have change to port 80 and then back to port 81
it not the isp, before I had dsl, I did have my bbs web pages on port 80 (same
isp)

I should have looked a little closer to that... :)

Rob, do you understand that you posted that URL, and i said it didnt work.
you said it did work, and posted other URLS.
i pointed out that your ip is not updated correctly to THAT url.
it was your internal ip.
I GET THAT YOUR OTHER DOMAINS WORK!
i was simply pointing out that you made a mistake with the original url you
posted; it needs the ip address to be updated correctly.

Question, will the doing away with zonegates affect any internal issues there
with the statements? This is happening the next week or so and has in some
zones already.
