Is there a guide to install TradeWars 2002 in Mystic BBS ?

Do i need to connect to an external game server or it works standalone ? the
game server solution may be good, so that several BBS may share the same game

Please tell me which are the exact releases to intall (my BBS runs on docker ,
ubuntu based, and i have installed dosemu too)

An external game server is a good choice; it's easy to set up on your BBS &
players will have more players to play against.

I recommend BBSLink. (http://bbslink.net)

To use BBSLink, just go to their website and fill out an application. Once
they approve you, they will give you a python file, and you set it up in
Mystic like this:

(DD) Exec external program
/home/alessandro/mystic/themes/default/scripts/bbslink.py trdw %#

It's easy, maintenance free, you get more players, and you don't have to deal
with windows/linux compatibility.

I see you're using Ubuntu in a docker container. In my experience there's no
way a modern linux with dosemu can run TW2002. The DPMI issues you'll
encounter render this basically impossible.

You do have a few choices, though. One is a game server like bbslink (I can't
provide much here since I don't use them). Another, is if you have xorg
running (even in VNC), you can run TWGS which is what I do. It's highly
performant and you can run multiple games at the same time.

Sadly modern 64 bit linux kernels, like modern Windows and MacOS, have
deprecated true backwards compatibility with 16 bit programs. This makes
dosemu something of an exception to the rule since it still works in a lot of
cases. That said, the DPMI stuff required by TW2002 will more than likely not
work. The only way to make it work would be to use an old or custom compiled
linux kernel (I haven't gotten a custom kernel to work), run an old linux
distro and never upgrade (dangerous!), or run a 32 bit distro which may or
may not be deprecated soon.

I have written a guide to accomplish this in the Linux/64 bit version of
Mystic. Currently have TW2002 V.3.09 running on my bbs natively without the
need for an external door server (though I also have a BBSLink game running
as well). The setup on windows would be different though possible if you are
running a 32-Bit version of windows (which was my original approach by
setting up a telnet session from the linux bbs to the windows machine using a
telnet server and a batch file to copy the drop file).

Door servers are great resources if you want the game to run. You could also
purchase the TWGS version of the game and run a door server yourself and only
allow your BBS to connect to it.

Version 3.09 is probably the best version to run on, I use the DPMI version.
Check out my guide for setting up TW2002 at:

https://www.arcadiabbs.com/setting-up-tradewars-on-linux/

I also wrote a guide for setting up Mystic and DOSEMU on Ubuntu 20.04 64/Bit
which may give you some useful info (though it sounds like you are already
set with the DOSEMU setup:

https://www.arcadiabbs.com/ubuntu-20-04-64-bit-dosemu-setup/

You are welcome to connect and check out the running game by connecting to
the bbs at telnet://bbs.arcadiabbs.com

Mike
